Hawthorn Dene is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Easington district of County Durham, England. The site occupies the incised valley of Hawthorn Burn and extends from just south of the village of Hawthorn eastward as far as the Durham Coast railway line: the area between the railway line and the sea forms part of the Durham Coast SSSI. Much of the area consists of semi-natural and relatively undisturbed woodland that has developed on Magnesian Limestone; within Durham, only Castle Eden Dene SSSI has a larger area under this type of vegetation. At the eastern end of the dene, the woodland gives way to magnesian limestone grassland, while at the western end there is an area of tall fen vegetation. Much of the woodland is dominated by ash, Fraxinus excelsior, but in places wych elm, Ulmus glabra is dominant; such woodland is scarce in Durham. Another notable feature is the occurrence of yew, Taxus baccata, on the lower valley slopes, this being rare in Britain.

Originally known as Glendene School, it converted to academy status since September 2012 and was renamed Glendene Arts Academy. It was formally reopened by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh following a £2.3 million refurbishment.In 2014, a report was released by the Education Funding Agency—who are responsible for funding and monitoring the finances of free schools and academies—alleging financial mismanagement and demanding the school repay £162,000 of taxpayers' money. A spokesperson said that the school had engaged in a "serious mismanagement of funds" Following the publication of the report, three people connected to the school were arrested by police on suspicion of fraud and released on bail.The school has since been renamed Hope Wood Academy and is now sponsored by the Ascent Academies’ Trust.

Easington Colliery is a town in County Durham, England, known for a history of coal mining. It is situated to the north of Horden, a short distance to the east of Easington Village. The town suffered a significant mining accident on 29 May 1951, when an explosion in the mine resulted in the deaths of 83 men. Easington had a population of 4,959 in 2001, and 5,022 at the 2011 Census.The town's prominence increased after its use as the fictional Everington in the film Billy Elliot (2000), starring Jamie Bell.

The only public building in the village of Hawthorn is the Staplyton Arms, a small public house situated in roughly the centre of the village. Close by Hawthorn Dene's mouth, there was until the late 1970s, a large Gothic Revival house, named "Hawthorn Towers" once the family home of Major Anderson, who was connected with the Building of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge.

Stony Cut, Cold Hesledon is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Easington district of north-east County Durham, England. It consists of a shallow cutting alongside Seaham Golf Course close to the village of Cold Hesledon. The cutting exposes a section of Late Permian Ford Formation (Zechstein) dolomite in which the transition from the flat to the crest of the shelf-edge of an ancient reef is clearly visible. The site has been designated as of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review.

The Marquess of Londonderry proposed the building of a new harbour at a rocky inlet at Dalden Ness, Seaham and work began in November 1828. Previously this rocky inlet was known by the locals as "the black hole". Mariners using the harbour colloquially referred to it as the "hole-in-the-wall" because it was hewn out of the actual cliffs unlike many typical harbour constructions. George Head in 1836 wrote "To a stranger casually passing this little harbour, appearances certainly indicate its thriving condition; the new south dock is already open and the staithes basin is a striking picture of the economy of space....The works are interesting owing to their dissimilarity from harbours in general, which are usually formed within a bight or bay. Here a bluff headland of limestone has been scooped hollow and as the cliffs are lofty , the vessels ride with their topgallant-mast heads below the summit",

Seaham Harbour railway station was a railway station that served the town of Seaham Harbour in County Durham, North East England. For much of its existence, it was the southern passenger terminus of the Londonderry, Seaham and Sunderland Railway but declined in importance after the opening of the nearby Seaham Colliery station and the extension of the line to West Hartlepool (avoiding Seaham Harbour station) by that company's successor.
