The name Abbey Dore came into being in the 18th century, combining the Modern English word abbey for the Cistercian abbey in the village and the river name dore from Primitive Welsh meaning 'water'.The village is situated in the Golden Valley, and has a population of 342, increasing to 385 at the 2011 census. The Grade I listed parish church of St Mary is the former abbey church. It is on Historic England's list of buildings at risk.The village contains Abbey Dore Court, a large country house built in 1861. Abbeydore railway station closed in 1941. It was on the Great Western Railway branch line linking Pontrilas and Hay-on-Wye. The railway always spelt the name of the village as one word.

Dore Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in the village of Abbey Dore in the Golden Valley, Herefordshire, England. A large part of the original medieval building has been used since the 16th century as the parish church, with remaining parts either now ruined or no longer extant.

Abbey Dore Court is a country house in Abbey Dore, Herefordshire, England. It was built in the Golden Valley in 1861 for Thomas Freke Lewis. It includes the former public house, the Red Lion Inn which was built in the early 1800s. The property was owned by the Partridge family and then later by the Prothero family of Malpas Court. The house is now surrounded by a significant plantsman's garden created by the previous owner, Charis Ward, since 1976. These, and the Stables Tearooms, were open to the public but are no longer. In 2010, the house underwent significant renovation and internal modernisation in order to be let for holiday rentals. Dore Abbey, the 1147 Cistercian abbey, which is still used as the village place of worship, is nearby. In April 2010 and September 2011, Abbey Dore Court was the subject of a Channel 4 television documentary presented by hotelier Ruth Watson as part of her Country House Rescue series.The property was sold in 2018 and is now privately owned.

Ewyas Harold () is a village and civil parish in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire, England, near the Wales-England border about halfway between Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, and Hereford. The population of this civil parish at the 2011 census was 883. It lies on the Dulas brook, and is contiguous with the neighbouring village of Pontrilas. The village is on the site of Ewyas Harold Castle, of which only the motte remains. Its name derives from the Welsh kingdom of Ewyas and from Harold, son of Ralph the Timid (Earl of Hereford), and grandson of King Æthelred the Unready.Ewyas Harold parish has a large area of common land rich in wildlife and ancient meadow saffron, a leftover from cultivation by the monks at Dore Abbey. Some villagers have commoner's rights. The village has a school, a fire station and a redundant Catholic church. The Church of England ministry of St. Michael and All Angels is now linked with that of several neighbouring parishes. It is the nearest village to the Pontrilas Army Training Area.

Rowlestone (also spelled Rowlstone) is a village and civil parish in the county of Herefordshire in England. It is a rural area with agriculture the main source of employment, and had only 87 residents in 2004, increasing to 180 at the 2011 Census.The area was historically Welsh-speaking. Two Welsh Bibles from Rowlestone, formerly stored in the Rowlestone vicarage and damaged by fire, are kept in the Herefordshire County archives. It is notable mainly for the Norman parish church of St. Peter, which contains some distinguished carvings, including a tympanum showing Christ in Majesty with four attendant angels. These carvings are of the same distinctive Herefordshire School as those at the nearby Church of St Mary and St David, Kilpeck.

Pontrilas Army Training Area is a British Army training camp, located just north of the village of Ewyas Harold near to Pontrilas in Herefordshire, England. Originally developed pre-World War II by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) as an ammunition dump, it was served by the Golden Valley Railway.
