Sherrard is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States. Sherrard is located on West Virginia Route 88, 3 miles (4.8 km) east of McMechen. It is named for politician and lawyer Sherrard Clemens.

WBGI-FM is owned by Cody Barack through licensee Ohio Midland Newsgroup LLC. The station has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 13,500 watts. The transmitter is on Highland Lane in Bethlehem, near Interstate 470.

The Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company (formerly the Helme Tobacco Company) of Wheeling, West Virginia was a tobacco company founded by brothers Aaron and Samuel Bloch in 1879. It was best known for its Mail Pouch chewing tobacco. Mail Pouch was a popular chew advertised on over 20,000 barns, most of which were located in the rural Ohio River Valley. Each barn had an end or side painted with the familiar Mail Pouch lettering and advertising, "Treat yourself to the best." The brothers began manufacturing cigars in 1879 as a side-line to Samuel Bloch's wholesale grocery business. It was discovered that the left-over cigar clippings could be flavored and packaged in a paper bag, and then sold. Mail Pouch chewing tobacco is still produced by Swisher International Group.

Benwood is a city in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States, along the Ohio River. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,269 at the 2020 census.Benwood was chartered in 1853 and incorporated in 1895. The name of the city is derived from "Ben's Woods", as Benjamin McMechen (1777–1855) inherited that portion of land from the estate of his father, William McMechen (1724–1797), and built his homestead upon it. The neighboring city of McMechen is named after William McMechen and his family, who were among the earliest settlers of this area.

The Benwood Mine Disaster was a coal mine explosion that occurred on Monday, April 28, 1924, at the Benwood Mine of the former Wheeling Steel Corporation steel mill located in the city of Benwood in Marshall County, West Virginia. The explosion claimed the lives of 119 coal miners. There were two survivors. It is the third worst coal mining disaster in the state of West Virginia after the Monongah Mine disaster of December 6, 1907 that claimed the lives of 361 miners and the Eccles Mine Disaster of April 28, 1914 that claimed the lives of 183 miners.The explosion, caused by the ignition of methane gas and coal dust, occurred at approximately 7:05 AM EST, about a half-hour after the morning shift of coal miners had entered the mine to begin work.The majority of the miners killed were recent European immigrants of the early 20th Century from Poland, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovakia, England, Wales and Scotland.A memorial for the 119 victims of the April 28, 1924 Benwood Mine Disaster was erected at the mouth of Boggs Run along Boggs Run Road/Roosevelt Avenue in Benwood, Marshall County, West Virginia in 2014. A committee of eight Marshall County, West Virginia residents known as the Benwood Mine Disaster Memorial Committee was formed in August 2011. Fundraising for the memorial began in 2012. Construction took place between 2013 and 2014. The memorial was formally dedicated on September 27, 2014. A smaller memorial for the five victims of the May 18, 1942 Hitchman Coal & Coke Mine Disaster (this coal mine was also located in Benwood) is also on site and was dedicated on the same day.On September 2, 2019, a memorial was dedicated at the Benwood Mine Disaster Memorial Site honoring Joseph "Joe" Tellitocci, Jr. (December 31, 1952 - March 15, 2018), who served as the Project Coordinator of the Benwood Mine Disaster Memorial Committee from 2011 until his death in 2018 and was a former Benwood City Councilman from 1982 to 2002. He and his oldest son, Joseph Anthony "Joey" Tellitocci (who served as the Co-Chairman, Treasurer and Historian of the Benwood Mine Disaster Memorial Committee), were both honored as West Virginia History Heroes in 2015 at the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston, West Virginia for their efforts in establishing the memorial.

Wheeling Hospital is a 223 bed hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia. Originally founded in 1850, it is one of the oldest hospitals in the United States in continuous operation as an institution. It was founded by visitation nuns and later became affiliated with the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph. During the Civil War, the hospital was used by the military.In the 1980s, a new hospital complex was built in the Clator neighborhood of Wheeling, and the original hospital in North Wheeling was demolished in the 1990s.

La Belle Iron Works, also known as La Belle Cut Nail Works, was a historic factory complex and national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district included four contributing buildings; three Italianate style brick buildings dated to the founding of the company in 1852, and a tin plate mill built 1894–1897. After 1902, the buildings were combined under a single roof, although the truss systems date to different periods achieving the configuration visible today. When listed in 1997, it was known as the "La Belle Cut Nail Plant, The Largest in the World, Wheeling Corrugating Company, A Division of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation." The cut nail machinery still in use by La Belle dated to 1852 and the 1860s. The machinery at La Belle along with the different processes were documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey team during the summer of 1990.The plant stopped operation in 2010, and was demolished in 2017.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Boggs Island is an island on the Ohio River in Marshall County, West Virginia between the cities of Bellaire, Ohio and Wheeling, West Virginia. It is a small island near the Ohio shore opposite the mouth of Boggs Run, from which it may take its name. Strip mine companies removed every mature tree on this island in the 1980s.
