Hays is a neighborhood in the 31st Ward of the east side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is represented on the Pittsburgh City Council by the representative of District 5 (Corey O'Connor). It occupies ZIP codes 15227, 15207, and 15236. It is named after James H. Hays, who opened a coal-mining operation called Hays and Haberman Mines in 1828. Hays was first settled in 1789 when still part of Baldwin Township by John Smalls, who named the area Six Mile Ferry Village. The H.B. Hays and Brothers Coal Railroad was a narrow gauge railroad that ran from the coal mine along Streets Run to the coal tipple at Six Mile Ferry.The neighborhood was formerly the site of the Hays Army Ammunition Plant, built by the U.S. Navy in 1942. The plant was transferred to the Army in 1966, and during its heyday between World War II and the Vietnam War employed more than a thousand people. In 1970 the plant was put on standby status until disposition in 1988. In 1993 the site was donated to the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. The closing of the plant has led to an enormous loss of population: in 1940 the population was 2,238, while in 2010 the population was only 362.

Beck's Run School (also known as Dower's Tavern) located at 1000 Becks Run Road in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was built in 1899. This former two story and two room school house was used almost up until World War II. It later became known as Dower's Tavern (currently "Down the Road Saloon"). It was added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on September 28, 1987.

Becks Run is a tributary of the Monongahela River. As an urban stream, it is heavily polluted, receiving combined sewer outflow from Carrick (Pittsburgh) and Mount Oliver, Pennsylvania. There is a waterfall on a tributary, just downstream from a slate dump, near the intersection of Wagner Avenue and Mountain Avenue. There were coal mines along the stream, including Becks Run #2, owned by the estate of James H. Hays, served by an incline and the H.B. Hays and Brothers Coal Railroad. Other mines at various times were operated by the Birmingham Coal Company, H.G. Burghman, Jones & Laughlin, and the Monongahela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company.It is the namesake of the Pittsburgh and Beck's Run Railroad (1877-1880), which ran from the Smithfield Street Bridge to the Jones and Laughlin Iron Works, and was absorbed by the P&LE Railroad. A former town, located where Becks Run enters the Monongahela, was also named Becks Run.

Fort Robert Smalls was a Civil War redoubt built by free blacks for the defense of Pittsburgh in 1863.It was named in honor of Robert Smalls, a man who escaped from slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina with his crew and their families by capturing a Confederate transport ship and piloting it to the safety of a Union blockade around the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina in 1862.

St. Clair Village was a public housing project of the Pittsburgh Housing Authority. Originally built in the 1950s, with 680 apartments, it fell into disrepair and financial difficulty along with much public housing in the city and was demolished in September 2010. Following the destruction of the St. Clair Village in 2010, the area is currently being redeveloped by the Hilltop Urban Farm, with the goal of transforming the site into the largest urban farm in the United States. It occupied the area of Pittsburgh also known as St. Clair.

Becks Run Road is a street in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It connects Brownsville Road in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh with East Carson Street on the South Side. It is part of the Blue Belt road system. It is one of few roads connecting the low-lying areas along the Monongahela River with the higher elevations to the south, and is therefore heavily traveled, in spite of being steep and narrow in some sections. The northern part of Becks Run Road follows part of the route of the H.B. Hays and Brothers Coal Railroad.

The Hazelwood Brewing Company is a historic former brewery in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The brewery opened in 1905 with a production capacity of 40,000 barrels per year and distributed its Bohemian, Pilsener, and Famous lagers throughout the region. During Prohibition, the company produced low-alcohol "near-beer," though it was raided several times for allegedly selling actual beer instead. After the end of Prohibition in 1933, the brewery was reorganized as the Hazelwood Beverage Company and then Derby Brewing Company. Derby Brewing went out of business in 1938, after which the brewery buildings were used for various purposes.The main brewery building is constructed from brick and has three sections which consist of one, one, and four bays, respectively. The middle section has four stories plus a mezzanine, while the other two sections have three stories and a mezzanine. The southern section originally had a fourth story as well but it was destroyed by a tornado in 1998. When built, the brewery also included an ice house, bottling building, and office. Part of the ice house is still standing but the other buildings were demolished.

Three Rivers Village School is the first democratic school in Pittsburgh, PA. It operates on the Sudbury school model of democratic education. Three Rivers Village School opened in the Fall of 2013 and accepts students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. It is a tuition-based private school that offers a sliding scale tuition rate. As of Fall 2014, it enrolls around 25 students. Three Rivers Village School emphasizes personal responsibility, innate thoughtfulness and trust in the judgement of its students and strives to foster a community of equals governed by democratic values, instead of the hierarchy, standardized testing, and arbitrary rule following enforced in the traditional schooling model.

Mount Oliver is a south neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It has a zip code of 15210, and has representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 3 (Central South Neighborhoods). It is adjacent to, but distinct from, the borough of Mount Oliver.

The Hazelwood Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh located at 4748 Monongahela Street in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was built in 1899. It was added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on July 28, 2004.The Hazelwood Branch Carnegie Library left this location in mid 2004 and was reopened in a recently constructed building on Second Avenue. In 2009 and again in 2011, the branch was threatened with closure due to funding shortfalls within the Carnegie Library system.The Branch re-opened in a third location in a renovated church on Second Avenue in June 2014 after a $2.4 million restoration doubling its original 3,500 square feet space to 7,000 square feet. The Monongahela Street structure remains vacant.

Concord Elementary School located at 2340 Brownsville Road in the Carrick neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was built in 1939. It was designed by Marion M. Steen (1886–1966) in Georgian Revival and Moderne style. It was added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2001, and the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on November 30, 1999.

The John Woods House at 4604 Monongahela Street in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a vernacular stone house that was built in 1792. It was added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations by Pittsburgh City Council on February 22, 1977. On April 29, 1993, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.John Woods (1761–1816) was a political leader, a Federalist, and a member of a prominent founding Pittsburgh family. He was the son of Colonel George Woods of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. "The elder Woods laid out the plan for the City of Pittsburgh in 1784. John did the actual drafting, and the plan is referred to as the 'John Woods plan of Pittsburgh.'" John Woods was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1797, and was elected as a Representative to the Fourteenth United States Congress, holding office from March 4, 1815, to March 3, 1817 (though, due to illness, he never attended sessions). The house stayed in the Woods family until 1885.Composer Stephen Foster was friends with the Woods family, and his song "Nelly Bly", written circa 1849 and published in 1850, was inspired by a servant girl who worked at the Woods house. The song was composed on Rachel Keller Woods' piano, on which Foster is said to have written other classics (including "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair"), and the instrument is currently housed at the Stephen Foster Memorial in Pittsburgh.This house is currently owned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). As of December 2020, the house was opened to the public as a Scottish pub.
