Nells Island

Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area is a 625-acre (253 ha) brackish tidal marsh, nature preserve and hunting area owned by the state of Connecticut located in Devon (village), Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.The Charles E. Wheeler WMA is located on the eastern shore (Milford side) of the mouth of the Housatonic River. It is protected from Long Island Sound by a barrier beach known as Milford Point. The main channel of the Housatonic River flows north and south to the west of the Charles E. Wheeler WMA, however a substantial amount of the water flows into and through the estuary itself particularly with the tide. The US Army Corp of Engineers dredged the Housatonic River channel between the WMA and Stratford in both 1976 and 2012. Without dredging, sediment from upriver would expand the Nells Island salt marsh area into the main channel of the river, obstructing recreational boating and commercial shipping.

Goose Island is an island owned by Stratford, Connecticut below I-95 in the Housatonic River. The island is currently a set of three islets due to erosion running north–south near the Stratford bank of the river. The island is south-southwest of the Washington Bridge, roughly parallel to Housatonic Avenue.

The Nathaniel Curtis House is a Georgian style house at 600 Housatonic Avenue in Stratford, Connecticut. Built about 1735, it is one of the town's few surviving 18th-century buildings. It was moved, by water, on a barge, in 1973, to its present location on the bank of the Housatonic River to rescue it from demolition. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Duck Island is the one of two islands in the Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area at the mouth of the Housatonic River. It is approximately 100 feet (30 m) from the end of Milford Point Road, near the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point. The island is uninhabited and is designated as a Department of Environmental Protection Natural Area Preserve, though people may visit the island outside of bird nesting season. The maximum elevation on the island is ~16 feet (4.9 m).The island is within the boundaries of the City of Milford, Connecticut and is owned and managed by State of Connecticut.

The Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point is a nature center and bird sanctuary in Milford, Connecticut, established in 1995. Over 300 different species of bird have been observed at this location. The Coastal Center is located on an 8.4-acre (34,000 m2) barrier beach—the Smith-Hubbell Wildlife Refuge & Bird Sanctuary—and is situated next to the 840-acre (3.4 km2) Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area at the mouth of the Housatonic River. The Coastal Center provides easy access to Long Island Sound and its many habitats: tidal salt marshes, barrier beaches, tide pools and coastal dunes, and utilizes these habitats for environmental education for youth and adults. These various environments and habitats support a variety of bird, plant and animal communities for observation and study. The Coastal Center also contains educational exhibits and live animals. The Coastal Center aims to promote awareness of Long Island Sound's ecosystem, the birds and habitats it supports and to foster their preservation, in keeping with the mission of the Connecticut Audubon Society.The center is one of five nature centers and 19 wildlife sanctuaries operated by Connecticut Audubon Society, which is not part of the National Audubon Society.

Milford Point is a 23-acre (0.093 km2) barrier beach on the shoreline of Milford, Connecticut. The long peninsula is the southwest extremity of the city, located at the mouth of the Housatonic River on Long Island Sound. A sandspit landform, the Point serves as a fortress, protecting the Charles Wheeler Salt Marsh (WMA), a tidal wetland and habitat to 315 different species of waterfowl, shorebirds, and waders. Milford Point is considered one of Connecticut's top birdwatching destinations, as the environment provides foraging and resting areas for tens of thousands of shorebirds each year, making it one of the most essential migration stopover areas on the Sound. Ownership of Milford Point is divided between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State Department of Environmental Protection. Additionally, the Connecticut Audubon Society leases a portion of land from the state, which is used as a bird sanctuary and educational facility called the Audubon Coastal Center at Milford Point. Milford Point is also one of ten land units that make up the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge.

The Captain David Judson House is a historic house at 967 Academy Hill in Stratford, Connecticut. It was built by David Judson ca. 1750. The new house was built on the stone foundation and incorporates the chimney of the original house built on the site in 1638 by Judson's great grandfather William. William left the house to his son Joseph Judson in November 1660 when he removed to New Haven. Nine generations of Judsons lived in the house until 1888.The first floor, now the cellar, is above ground level and contains a massive central stone chimney which was built with lug poles. It is believed that the cellar was used as slave quarters in the early18th century. The new house, built ca. 1750, is designed in the style of Georgian architecture, or colonial Georgian, found throughout the American colonies during this time. The furnishings are entirely period pieces of Stratford origin, dating from the 18th century and includes a piano which belonged to William Samuel Johnson, framer of the United States Constitution, and also the second president of Columbia University. The piano has been on display at George Washington's plantation Mount Vernon. The house also has various other works of historical and artistic significance, displayed for the public. The Judson House broken scroll pediment entry is one of the finest in Connecticut. An architectural drawing was used on the cover of J. Frederick Kelly's Early Domestic Architecture of Connecticut published in 1924.Captain David Judson House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1973. It is also included in the Stratford Center Historic District, which was listed on the NRHP in 1978.The house is open to the public and is operated as a historic house museum and research library by the Stratford Historical Society, and is located at 967 Academy Hill in Stratford.

The Stratford Center Historic District is a 220-acre (89 ha) historic district in Stratford, Connecticut. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It then included 257 contributing buildings.It is significant for historical association, for architecture, and for information potential (the latter for possible archeological investigation of the Academy Hill Green area of a 17th-century fort.Selected significant elements in the district include: Capt. David Judson House, 967 Academy Hill, built 1723, which in 1978 was a museum run by the Stratford Historical Society William A. Booth House, 956 Broad Street, built 1857, designed by architect Leopold Eidlitz in "Swiss Chalet" style: 9  Lieut. William Thompson House, 904 East Broadway, a saltbox from 1762: 11  Old Episcopal burying ground First Congregational Church, 2301 Main Street (accompanying photograph #7)The district also includes dozens of other historical houses including the Stratford Shakespeare American Theatre, a singular 1500 seat venue where currently popular American Hollywood actors have performed.

The Connecticut Air & Space Center is an aviation museum located near Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford, Connecticut that is focused on the history of aviation in Connecticut. Founded by George Gunther in 1998 after the closing of the Stratford Army Engine Plant, it currently occupies buildings 6 and 53 of the complex.

The Connecticut Brakettes is a women's fastpitch softball team based in Stratford, Connecticut. The team has won many state, regional, national, and international tournaments (28 as of 2009).

The Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field is a state-of-the-art softball facility located in Stratford, Connecticut. It is the home of the Connecticut Brakettes team of Amateur Softball Association (ASA).
