Langford Hall

Langford is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located four miles north-east of Newark-on-Trent and two miles East from The River Trent. Population details are included in the civil parish of Holme. It is based on A1133 which comes off of the A46. Although Langford is currently located two miles from The River Trent it has not always been this way. In "1575 there was a cataclysmic flood" which altered the course of the Trent which meant Langford and Holme were now on the same side of the river. Before this change in the rivers course the Trent used to flow next to St Bartholomew's church and Holme was on the opposite side of the bank. John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870–72) records Langford as follows: Langford, a parish in Newark district, Notts; on the Newark and Lincoln railway, and on the Fosse way, near the river Trent, and near the boundary with Lincolnshire, 3 miles NNE of Newark r[ailway] station. Post-town, Newark. Acres, 2,182. Real property, £2,471. Pop., 161. Houses, 24. The manor and most of the land belong to Lord Middleton. Langford House is the seat of T. A. F. Burnaby, Esq. Bricks are made. A Roman settlement was here. The living is a p[erpetual] curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Holme, in the diocese of Lincoln. The church is a plain building, with a tower. The village gives its name to the nearby Langford Lowfields RSPB reserve, a tarmac and sand quarry that is gradually being transformed into a nature reserve with extensive reedbeds. The site is home to species such as sand martin, bearded tit and Cetti's warbler.

Royal Air Force Winthorpe, or more simply RAF Winthorpe, is a former Royal Air Force station located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of Newark in Nottinghamshire, England. It is now the site of Newark Air Museum and Newark Showground. It initially opened as a satellite station for RAF Swinderby in 1940, being used by 300 and 301 Polish squadrons and later, 1661 HCU of No. 5 Group.The station was declared inactive in 1959.

Newark Showground is a showground in Newark, Nottinghamshire. It makes up 200 acres (0.81 km2) of the former RAF Winthorpe Airfield which was purchased in 1964 by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society.

Newark was a rural district in Nottinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was formed by the Local Government Act 1894 from the Newark rural sanitary district. The district was long and thin, being far longer from the far north to the far south than it was widthwise, as much of the Newark RSD had been in Lincolnshire, and went to form the Claypole Rural District. The district was amended slightly in 1935 under a County Review Order, losing some area to Newark, but taking some parishes from Southwell Rural District. In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, becoming part of a Newark and Sherwood district along with Southwell RD and the Newark borough.

Winthorpe is a village located 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, England. The population at the 2011 census was 650. The name is probably from old English wynne þrop (thorp), hamlet of joy. Winthorpe has a village hall, a local pub called the Lord Nelson and a community centre where the events range from a monthly lunch club to an annual Bonfire night celebration. The current building, the construction of which was completed in 1888, is at least the third version of the church, which dates back to at least the early 13th century. All Saints' Church was commissioned by the church rector, Edward Handley, in memory of one of his relatives.

Holme is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England. The population of the civil parish (including Langford) at the 2011 Census was 165. It is located on the east of the River Trent, less than half a mile from the riverside and 4 miles north of Newark-on-Trent. The parish church of St Giles is an Early Tudor rebuild of a 13th-century church. The Lancashire wool merchant John Barton was responsible for the rebuilding. He died in 1491, and is buried in the chancel with his wife. In a window of his house at Holme is inscribed the verse: I thanke God, and ever shall, It is the sheep have paid for all.Holme was historically a chapelry in the ancient parish of North Muskham. Until about 1575 it lay on the west side of the River Trent, but there was then a cataclysmic flood which changed the course of the river. Holme was therefore separated by the river from the rest of the parish. In 1866 Holme became a separate civil parish.The last known catch of a sturgeon on the Trent occurred in 1902 near the village, the fish was eight and a half feet long and weighed 250 pounds.
