Catlettsburg is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Boyd County, Kentucky, United States. The city population was 1,780 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area.

WZWB (1420 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports format, licensed to Kenova, West Virginia and serving the Huntington market as the area's affiliate of Fox Sports Radio. Until 2022, for all programming other than local sporting events, it was a simulcast of WIRO in nearby Ironton, Ohio. Prior to its current format, the station broadcast a Christian religious format known as Joy Radio and was, until January 2007, simulcast with WZZW of Milton, West Virginia.

The Big Sandy River, called Sandy Creek as early as 1756, is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 29 miles (47 km) long, in western West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky in the United States. The river forms part of the boundary between the two states along its entire course. Via the Ohio River, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. It is formed between Louisa, Kentucky, and Fort Gay, West Virginia, by the confluence of the Tug Fork and Levisa Fork. It flows generally northwardly in a highly meandering course, between Lawrence and Boyd counties in Kentucky and Wayne County in West Virginia. It joins the Ohio between Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Kenova, West Virginia, 8 miles (13 km) west of Huntington, West Virginia, at the common boundary between West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The river is navigable and carries commercial shipping, primarily coal mined in the immediate region. The name of the river, originally called Sandy Creek by 1756, comes from the presence of extensive sand bars. The Native American names for the river included Tatteroa, Chatteroi, and Chatterwha. The name "Big Sandy" was in use no later than February, 1789.George Washington surveyed land at the mouth of the river between 1768 and 1772.

Catlettsburg is a former Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad station located in downtown Catlettsburg, Kentucky. Opened between 1897 and 1890 to replace an older wooden station, it served trains until 1958. Amtrak trains began stopping at Tri-State Station some 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the north in 1975; it was renamed Catlettsburg around 1988. Amtrak service was moved from Catlettsburg to Ashland in 1998. The C&O station was refurbished from 2004 to 2006 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

England Hill is an unincorporated community located on the west shore of the Big Sandy River and along Paddle Creek in Boyd County, Kentucky, USA, adjacent to the southern city limits of Catlettsburg on U.S. Route 23 and historic Mayo Trail. Mayo Trail was previously U.S. 23 until the current alignment which bypasses the community was completed in 1963. England Hill is closely associated with the city of Catlettsburg and has fought annexation by Catlettsburg numerous times over the years. The area known as England Hill is served by the England Hill Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1977. It has the Catlettsburg, Kentucky zip code. The subdivision known as Hyland Heights was developed on a portion of the former Hyland Dairy Farm after the business was sold to Johnson Dairy Co. in the 1960s. The lands of the former dairy farm were subdivided and sold in lots during the 1960s and 1970s. Transplants who moved from Catlettsburg due to the modernization/widening projects that were completed on U.S. Route 23 during that time. The England Hill School, later renamed Cooper School, served residents in K-8, then K-6 for many years in Hyland Heights. Cooper School was open for 26 years, from 1962 to 1988, when students were transferred to the nearby Catlettsburg or Durbin elementary schools depending on the location of their homes. England Hill is a suburb of Catlettsburg, and has fought annexation into the city many times, most notably in 1987, when Catlettsburg tried to annex England Hill and all areas north of I-64.

Kenova is a city in Wayne County, West Virginia, United States, situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers. The city's name is a portmanteau of Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia (Va), owing to its location where the three states met before the creation of West Virginia. The population was 3,030 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area.Founded in 1859 but not incorporated until 1894, the town's early history and development was centered on the railroad industry. It is home to a major Norfolk Southern Ohio River Bridge. CSX Transportation's former Chesapeake and Ohio Kanawha Subdivision travels through the town as well. The city is also near the site of the Southern Airways Flight 932 aviation disaster. In 1970, a plane carrying the Marshall University football team crashed on a hillside on approach to the Tri-State Airport, killing all on board. A movie about the tragedy, We Are Marshall, was released in 2006.

South Point is a village in Lawrence County, Ohio, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 3,836 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area. The village mayor is Jeff Gaskin, who was elected in November 2015.

Joseph S. Miller House is a historic home located at Kenova, Wayne County, West Virginia. It was built in 1891, in the Queen Anne style with Eastlake decorative elements. It is a two-story frame dwelling on a sandstone foundation with tower. It features a combination of wood fish scale, diamond and octagon shingles on the balcony, the west bay, and tower sections.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.It is well known in the area for the annual tradition of decorating with thousands of pumpkins in the fall; colloquially becoming known as the "Pumpkin House".

The Catlettsburg Refinery is an American oil refinery. It is located in northeastern Kentucky, at the intersection of Interstate 64 and U.S. Route 23 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky near the cities of Ashland, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia. The facility was built in 1916 by the Great Eastern Refining Company and purchased in 1924 by the Ashland Refining Company. The refinery now occupies a 650-acre (260 ha) plus site, producing more than 291,000 barrels per day (46,300 m3/d), and employing around 1,600 employees and contractors. Its location on the west banks of the Big Sandy River and only two miles south of the Ohio River, allows it to ship products by barge as well as pipeline. It is owned and operated by Marathon Petroleum Corporation.Due to the coal mining industry and the large quantity of petroleum products shipped from the refinery, the Port of Huntington Tri-State is the largest inland port in the United States, with 76.5 million tons shipped in 2007.

Mitch Stadium is a baseball field located on the boundary line between the Town of Ceredo and the City of Kenova in West Virginia. It is home to the Ceredo-Kenova Little League and numerous annual community events. The stadium was created in 1955 and is named in honor of Elmer "Big Mitch" Mitchell, who served as groundskeeper at the facility for 27 years until his death in 1981. The facility at Mitch Stadium has previously hosted concerts, youth football and soccer events, and community carnivals and festivals. "The Mitch" has hosted 7 West Virginia Little League State Tournaments, the 1965 Little League Divisional Tournament, the 2009 Little League 2009 Little League Southeast Regional baseball and softball tournaments, and served as the initial host of the Little League 9-10 Year-Old Tournament of State Champions.
