Rampside

Rampside Hall is a Grade I listed building in the Rampside area of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It is one of only three Grade I listed buildings in the Borough outside of the Furness Abbey complex and dates back to the 17th century. Built for the Knype family, it is most noted for its dozen chimneys which have given the building the nickname 'the twelve apostles'. Rampside Hall retains the majority of its original features, with the only major alteration taking place in 1810 when the building was re-roofed. The building was heavily damaged on 15 February 1865 when a 2.2ML earthquake shook the area, toppling three of its famed chimneys, cracking walls and displacing some of them by eight inches.There is evidence of a house on the Rampside Hall site since 1634, however the precise date of construction for the present building is thought to be in the late 17th century. Rampside Hall is three storeys in height excluding the attic, and is of a 5 bay, double-depth plan. Some important original features noted by Historic England include a well in the building's cellar as well as a large staircase rising through all three floors, with oak balustrades and handrails.

Rampside Leading Light, also known as "The Needle", is a leading light (navigation beacon) located in the Rampside area of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Built in 1875, it is the only surviving example of 13 such beacons built around Barrow during the late 19th century to aid vessels into the town's port. It stands 20 metres (66 ft) tall and is constructed from red and yellow bricks. Rampside Lighthouse was designated a Grade II listed building by English Heritage in 1991.

Rampside railway station was located on the Piel Branch of the Furness Railway in the Rampside area of Barrow-in-Furness, England. The single platform station opened from 24 August 1846 as Concle, being renamed Rampside in 1869. The station remained operational until 1936 when it closed along with the following station at Piel, which had been reachable via the Roa Island Causeway. The station building and entire branch line had been demolished by the 1980s.

Roa Island lies just over half a mile (1 km) south of the village of Rampside at the southernmost point of the Furness Peninsula in Cumbria, though formerly in the county of Lancashire north of the sands. It is located at 54°5′N 3°10′W (OS grid ref. SD 233650). It is one of the Islands of Furness in northern England. It has an area of about three hectares. For local government purposes Roa Island is within the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. The island's population stands at around 100, making it the 15th most populated island in England.

Piel railway station was the terminus of the Furness Railway's Piel Branch in Barrow-in-Furness, England that operated between 1846 and 1936. Located on Roa Island it was built to serve the passenger steamers at Piel Pier. The Roa Island causeway was specifically constructed for the railway, in turn making the island part of the British mainland. The station and the Piel Branch line have both been demolished, however the Roa Island Hotel which was built adjoining the station survives to this day as a Grade II listed building.

Roose or Roosecote is a suburb and ward of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. The word 'roose' is Celtic for "moor" or "heath" and the suffix 'cote' of Roosecote means "hut" or "huts" (the word 'cottage' is derived from 'cote'). Before the building of Roose Cottages and the arrival of the Cornish miners Roose was pronounced with a hard S, as in goose; now it is locally pronounced 'Rooze', due to the Cornish accent. Roose is served by Roose railway station, one of the few remaining stations on the Furness Line in the Barrow area. The ward of Roose also encompass the settlements of Rampside and Stank, as well as Piel Island and Roa Island, it extends as far north as Abbot's Wood Nature Reserve.

Piel Island lies in Morecambe Bay , around 1⁄2 mile (800 metres) off the southern tip of the Furness peninsula in the administrative county of Cumbria, England. It is one of the Islands of Furness, three of which sit near to Piel at the mouth of Walney Channel. The island is the location of Piel Castle, built by the monks of Furness Abbey in the fourteenth century. Historically within Lancashire, the island today is owned by the town of Barrow-in-Furness, having been given to the people by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1922. The Borough Council's administrative duties also include the selection of the "King" of Piel, who is the landlord of the island's public house, the Ship Inn. Piel is about 26 acres (11 hectares) in size. The landlord and their family are usually the only permanent residents, though there are eight old fishermen's cottages which are used by sailors or as second homes.

Piel Castle, also known as Fouldry Castle or the Pile of Fouldray, is a castle situated on the south-eastern point of Piel Island, off the coast of the Furness Peninsula in north-west England. Built in the early-14th century by John Cockerham, the Abbot of neighbouring Furness Abbey, it was intended to oversee the trade through the local harbour and to protect against Scottish raids. The castle was built using stones from the local beach, and featured a large keep with surrounding inner and outer baileys. It was used as a base by the Yorkist pretender Lambert Simnel in 1487, but by 1534 it had fallen into ruin and passed into the hands of the Crown. Sea erosion began to cause significant damage to the castle in the early 19th century. In the 1870s the castle's owner, the Duke of Buccleuch, carried out extensive restoration work and erected outworks to protect it against further damage from the sea. In 1920 the castle was given to the town of Barrow-in-Furness and is now in the care of English Heritage.

Foulney Island is a low-lying grass and shingle area 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south-east of Roa Island, off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula in Cumbria, England. Foulney Island is one of the Islands of Furness in Morecambe Bay, northern England. For local government purposes the island is in the borough of Barrow-in-Furness. It has an area of about 40 acres (16 ha). In earlier times it was known as Fowle Island. The island is connected to the mainland via a shingle and rock causeway which was built in Victorian times as a tidal protection measure. The Foulney causeway leaves the Roa Island causeway halfway along its length on the eastern side. The maximum elevation on the island is no more than 10 feet (3 metres) above the high tide level. At the time of highest tides much of the island can be inundated. There are no permanent inhabitants on the island.

Rampside Gas Terminal is a gas terminal situated in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria on the Irish Sea coast. It connects to gas fields in Morecambe Bay. It is situated adjacent to the former Roosecote Power Station.

Roosebeck is a hamlet in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England, on the north west coast of Morecambe Bay. It is in the civil parish of Aldingham.Roosebeck is on the A5087 road, the coastal route from Ulverston to Barrow-in-Furness via Rampside, and is in the south west corner of South Lakeland district: immediately to its west is the boundary of the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was opened at Roosebeck in 1879, closed in 1962, and has since been demolished. In 1870 seven human skeletons, arranged in two rows, and a celt (stone tool) were found at Roosebeck.

Roosecote Power Station was a gas-fired, originally coal-fired power station, situated in the Roosecote district of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, North West England. The gas-fired station opened in 1991 and was the first CCGT power station to supply electricity to the United Kingdom's National Grid, but was mothballed in 2012 after a proposed biomass power station was cancelled. It was situated directly adjacent to Rampside Gas Terminal. The plant was demolished between 2014 and 2015. The site is now a 49 MW battery storage facility. This item is slightly inaccurate. My father worked for contractors on the installation of the turbines in 1953 and I, as a baby, was present for the opening of the station in late 1954 or in 1955. Final commissioning and commencement of coal-fired generation was therefore in 1954 or 1955, not in 1953.
