North Mymms

Water End Swallow Holes is a biological site of Special Scientific Interest in Hertfordshire, south-east England. Located in Welham Green and under the planning authority of Welwyn Hatfield District Council, it has an area of 11.3 hectares (27.9 acres).The site covers more than fifteen swallet holes, the only ones in chalk which are a permanent feature of the landscape. Next to the holes is a swamp area of willow carr which is biologically important, and in deep water there is reed sweet-grass. The site also has areas of woodland and grassland. From the sinkholes the waters become the River Colne. There is access to the site from Station Road.

Mimmshall Brook is a 9.8 kilometres (6.1 mi) long stream (brook) in Greater London and Hertfordshire, England. Rising from two sources—one in Hertsmere, Hertfordshire, and the other in Arkley, London Borough of Barnet—the brook drains into a catchment area of 52 km² (20 sq mi) at Water End Swallow Holes, Welham Green, North Mymms. It is a tributary of the River Colne.

The Hope and Anchor was a grade II listed public house Welham Green, Hertfordshire. It is based on a 17th-century timber frame with later additions.

Welham Green is a village in the parish of North Mymms, Hertfordshire, England. It is situated a mile to the west of the Great North Road coaching route that used to run through the neighbouring hamlet of Bell Bar from London to York and the north. The Great North Road is now by-passed by the A1(M). Even so, Welham Green has developed into a small village over the last 100 years, helped by the 1986 opening of its own railway station between Brookmans Park and Hatfield on the East Coast Main Line. Recent housing development has portended the joining of the village with the neighbouring town of Hatfield. Some residents, including the North Mymms Green Belt Society, wishing to maintain Welham Green's character, have resisted such development.

Castle Lime Works Quarry is a 1.6 hectare (3.9 acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near South Mimms in Hertfordshire. The site was notified in 1986 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The site is a disused chalk quarry and according to Natural England: This reveals extensive piping in the top of the chalk resulting from solution at the Chalk - Tertiary sediment interface. Believed to have formed during the Tertiary and Pleistocene, it is the finest exposure of clay-filled pipes in the Chalk Karst of England.The site is on private land and there is no public access.

Redwell Wood is a 52.8-hectare (130-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near South Mimms in Hertfordshire. The local planning authority is Welwyn Hatfield District Council.The site has ancient and secondary woodland, heath and scrub. The woodland canopy is dominated by pedunculate oak. Ground flora include bluebells and enchanter’s-nightshade, while heathland species include heather and the rare creeping willow.There is access from Blackhorse Lane.

Colney Heath Mill is a Grade II listed smock mill at Colney Heath, Hertfordshire, England which has been converted to residential accommodation.

On a frosty Boxing day in 1870 the driver of the 16:25 from London King's Cross to Peterborough noticed an 'uneasy oscillation' as he passed over Marshmoor level crossing, 2 miles south of Hatfield station. He peered back and discovered he had lost his train and pulled up. He reversed back, preceded by his fireman on foot showing a red light. They were met by the white-faced guard who told them there had been a disaster. The driver reversed direction again and sped to Hatfield to warn oncoming traffic and summon help. It transpired that as the train approached the crossing the left hand leading wheel of the van at the front of the train had disintegrated and the coupling between the van and the locomotive had parted and the van and two following coaches had run off the rails onto the roadway demolishing a wall, and the crossing gates and posts and killing the mother and sister of a signalman who were waiting at the crossing. In addition six passengers in the two coaches were killed. The accident inspector criticized the method of tyre fixing and recommended, not for the first time, the use of Mansell composite wheels on passenger rolling stock.

Colney Heath is a large village in Hertfordshire, England. The village became a civil parish in 1947 when the St. Peter Rural parish was split to form Colney Heath and London Colney. There is a converted windmill in the village. The civil parish also includes the settlements of Smallford and Sleapshyde.

Welham Green railway station serves the village of Welham Green in Hertfordshire, England. It is 15 miles 50 chains (25.1 km) measured from King's Cross on the East Coast Main Line.Welham Green is just south of the scene of the Hatfield rail crash in 2000 and was initially identified in BBC broadcasts as the location of the accident.

Potters Bar Brook is a 3.3 km (2.0 mi) long stream (brook) in Hertfordshire, England, that is a tributary to the Mimmshall Brook.Rising in the town of Potters Bar, Potters Bar Brook flows a northwesterly course through the former golf course Potters Bar Golf Club until flowing under the East Coast Main Line via a culvert. Then, it flows a westerly course through Warrengate Farm until flowing into Mimmshall Brook.

The Black Horse is a Grade II listed public house at 65 Blackhorse Lane in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, England. It can be dated to the early 17th century -as early as 1642- and is of red brick with a tiled roof. It has been kept in its original style, with traditional decor and original bay windows. The building was registered in 1650 alongside the blacksmith building nearby, which can still be seen in disarray among the trees on the north-eastern side. Blackhorse Lane, which may be named after the pub, is the lane along which South Mimms developed. Due to its location the Black Horse has been a popular destination to Premier league football players over the years as the training grounds of two London teams are within a short distance. The current owner takes pride in keeping the building in its old style and wishes to preserve it to future generations. The Black Horse is also a popular destination to local population and customers from some distance - for drinks and good quality mostly locally sourced food. Aside from the homes along blackhorse lane and nearby village Brookside, the building is surrounded by acres of woodland, neighboring Hatfield House. The surrounding area was and remains rural. It is said that the Black Horse pub is connected to a series of tunnels as far as St Albans. The location is often sought after for productions such as advertisements and shows in need of a traditional english pub.
