Normaltown

The Carnegie Library Building is an historic building in Athens, Georgia. It was one of many such libraries donated by Andrew Carnegie which were named Carnegie Library after him. Funds were donated on March 5, 1905, and construction was completed in 1910 on the site of the State Normal School. On November 11, 1975, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was used as the Navy Supply Corps Museum when the campus was the base of the Navy Supply Corps School.The University of Georgia has renovated the building, which now houses a part of the university libraries. It has been given the name, Carnegie Library Learning Center.

Piedmont Athens Regional (formerly known as Athens Regional Medical Center or ARMC) is a healthcare system located in Athens, Georgia, that consists of an acute care hospital with 350-plus beds, four urgent care centers, a network of physicians and specialists, and a home health agency. The healthcare system serves a 17-county area and is one of the largest healthcare systems in northeast Georgia. Athens Regional Medical Center was named Piedmont Athens Regional when it joined Piedmont Healthcare in late 2016.

The James A. Sledge House, at 749 Cobb St. in Athens, Georgia, was built around 1860. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.It is a one-and-a-half-story Gothic Revival cottage. Its most salient features are its steep roof and three tall triangular front-facing dormers. It has a one-story veranda across the front of the house. It is built of stuccoed brick walls about 18 inches (0.46 m) thick.It is also included in the Cobbham Historic District.

The Cobbham Historic District, in Athens, Georgia, is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It included 216 contributing buildings on 117 acres (0.47 km2).The district is roughly bounded by Prince Ave., Hill, Reese, and Pope Streets. It includes Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Late Victorian.It includes: Fire Station #2 James A. Sledge House, a Gothic Revival cottage which is separately listed on the National Register. Allen's was a hamburger joint and nightclub in Athens, Georgia. It was originally established in 1955 in the Normaltown neighborhood of Athens, but was later located at the corner of Hawthorne and Oglethorpe Avenues. It went out of business in November 2011.

West Broad Street School was a late–19th century public school for African Americans in Athens, Georgia, United States. Three of its historic school buildings remain. The Clarke County Board of Education has been in ongoing discussion about the future of this former campus since 2016, with mention of proposed demolition in order to build a low income early childhood education program at the site.

The Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (ATHICA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) contemporary art gallery in Athens, Georgia, United States. Lizzie Zucker Saltz, ATHICA's founder and director, began the institute in 2001 with the help of FiveArt, Inc., a group of local developers and arts boosters. FiveArt, Inc. offered a 2,200-square-foot (200 m2) space in a warehouse jointly owned by the Chase Street Park Condominium Association. This space, which became ATHICA's home, was renovated in winter of 2001, and was leased to ATHICA for $1.00 a year for three years, and for a reduced rent thereafter. The space is located in the Chase Street Park warehouse district, an area just over a mile from Athens' downtown. ATHICA is run entirely by volunteers, with a board made up of local artists, arts professionals, graduate art history students and arts supporters, including students and faculty from the University of Georgia. Each year, ATHICA hosts three exhibitions of contemporary art, centering on politically and socially engaged themes. Exhibitions have covered a wide variety of issues, have included national and international artists, and are regularly reviewed by local publications. The organization also hosts affiliated events like music and dramatic performances, panel discussions, and film screenings, and offers gallery space for local and regional artists between curated shows.

The Clarke County School District is a public school district in Clarke County, Georgia, United States, based in Athens, Georgia. It serves Clarke County, which includes the communities of Athens and Winterville, and part of Bogart.

The Taylor-Grady House, also known as the Henry W. Grady House, is a historic house museum and National Historic Landmark at 634 Prince Avenue in Athens, Georgia, United States. Built in the 1840s, this Greek Revival house is notable as the only known surviving home of Henry W. Grady (1850–89), managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution and a leading force in the reintegration of the American South in the Reconstruction Era that followed the American Civil War. The house is operated by the Junior League of Athens, which offers tours and rentals for private events.

The Lucy Cobb Institute was a girls' school on Milledge Avenue in Athens, Georgia, United States. It was founded by Thomas R.R. Cobb, and named in honor of his daughter, who had died of scarlet fever at age 14, shortly before construction was completed and doors opened; it was incorporated in 1859. The cornerstone for the Seney-Stovall Chapel was laid in May 1882, and the octagonal building was dedicated in 1885. The school closed in 1931. The campus of the Lucy Cobb Institute was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972. Today, the Carl Vinson Institute of Government of the University of Georgia is housed in the former Lucy Cobb Institute.

Seney–Stovall Chapel is a church building in Athens, Georgia, United States. Part of Cobbham Historic District, it is located in the grounds of the former Lucy Cobb Institute, itself now part of the University of Georgia. It is named for George I. Seney and Nellie Stovall. Mildred Lewis Rutherford (or "Miss Millie"), then head of the Lucy Cobb Institute, decided the girls needed a chapel and had them write seeking funding for one. In 1881, Nellie Stovall wrote "a beautiful and girlish letter" to George I. Seney, who responded with the funding for the $10,000 structure, an octagonal red brick building called the Seney-Stovall Chapel. It was designed by a local architect William Winstead Thomas.When Rutherford stepped down from the role of principal in 1895, she was replaced at the school's helm by her sister, Mary Ann Lipscomb. Rutherford and Lipscomb were nieces of Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb.In 1986, R.E.M. recorded two songs—their own song, "Swan Swan H", and a cover of Boudleaux Bryant's "Dream (All I Have to Do)"—in the chapel for the documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out.
