La Brayelle Airfield was one of the first airfields in France. It was situated 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) west of Douai, in the Nord département in northern France. It was host to the world's first aviation meeting, home to Bréguet Aviation, and an important airfield in the First World War (WW1). It is occasionally referred to as Douai-Brayelles airfield. There were several other airfields in the area of Douai, especially during WW1, so the term 'Douai Airfield' may or may not refer to La Brayelle.

The Canal de la Sensée (French pronunciation: [kanal də la sɑ̃se]) is a canal in northern France. The project was developed under Napoleon. In March 1806, the imperial government gave orders to build a canal which would link the Scarpe River and the Escaut River (English: Scheldt). The work was commenced under the direction of Augustin Honnorez in June 1819 and the Sensée canal was opened to navigation in November 1820. At that time the boats were pulled by men or horses working for boat employers. Shortly after World War I 1914-1918, horses were replaced by tractors. The Canal de la Sensée forms part of the Canal Dunkerque-Escaut route.

IMT Nord Europe or École nationale supérieure Mines-Télécom Lille Douai is a French graduate school of engineering (grande école d'ingénieurs). It is located in the Hauts-de-France region, shared between 2 campuses: the science campus (cité scientifique) of the University of Lille (Villeneuve-d'Ascq, European Metropolis of Lille); and the city of Douai. It is accredited by the Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur (CTI) to deliver the French Diplôme d'Ingénieur. The school trains high-level engineers and scientists (Master and PhD level) in various technological fields. A small number of students are accepted each year, after a very selective exam. It is a crucial part of the infrastructure of French industry. It is affiliated to University of Lille and Institut Mines-Télécom (Mines-Télécom Institut of Technology - IMT). The École des Mines de Douai merged with TELECOM Lille in 2017 to become the largest engineering school in France north of Paris under the name IMT Lille Douai, then IMT Nord Europe.

The Bibliothèque municipale de Douai, now Bibliothèque Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (after the Douai-born poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore) is a library in Douai, France. Founded in 1767, it was bombed on August 11, 1944. The library reopened in 1955, in a new building designed by the architect Maurice Coasnes.The special collections ("réserve patrimoniale") include 607 medieval manuscripts (many of which were confiscated at the suppression of Anchin Abbey and Marchiennes Abbey during the French Revolution), over 300 incunables, a considerable number of works printed in Douai on hand-operated presses from 1569 onwards, and the literary remains (letters and manuscripts) of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859).
