Fort Vasquez is a former fur trading post 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Denver, Colorado, United States, founded by Louis Vasquez and Andrew Sublette in 1835. Restored by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, it now lies in a rather incongruous position as U.S. Route 85 splits to run either side of the building. History Colorado (then the Colorado Historical Society) took possession of the property in 1958 and runs it as a museum to display exhibits of the fur-trade era.

Fort Lupton, located in the city of the same name, was a trading post from 1836 or 1837 to 1844. After operating as a stage coach station and used as a house, the building fell into disrepair and crumbled to all but a portion of one wall by the early 20th century. The trading post has been reconstructed yards away from its original site and is now part of the South Platte Historical Park in northwestern Fort Lupton, Colorado.

Big Dry Creek is a tributary that joins the South Platte River near Fort Lupton, Colorado. It rises in Jefferson County, Colorado at the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,400 m).The creek flows through Jefferson, Adams, and Weld counties. In Jefferson County, it flows into and out of Standley Lake. It receives treated wastewater from several municipalities, including the City and County of Broomfield, Westminster, Thornton and Northglenn. The Big Dry Creek Watershed Association, a non-profit organization made up of individuals and representatives from local municipalities, monitors the creek's conditions. A second creek in the Denver Metropolitan Area shares the same name. The other Big Dry Creek rises in Douglas County and joins the South Platte River in Littleton. The Big Dry Creek Trail, a recreation trail, roughly follows the creek from Standley Lake Regional Park to Interstate 25.

The Platteville Atmospheric Observatory located near Platteville, Colorado was one of the first major ionospheric heaters in the world. Operating from 1968 through 1984, it expanded knowledge of ionospheric processes greatly. The observatory continues operation, but now focuses on wind profiling. The first studies were made of HF heater induced airglow, heater-induced spread F, wide band heater-induced absorption, and heater created field-aligned ionization.
