Westminster (town), Vermont

The Westminster Massacre was an incident that occurred on March 13, 1775, in the town of Westminster, Vermont, then part of the New Hampshire Grants, whose control was disputed between its residents and the Province of New York. It resulted in the killings of two men, William French and Daniel Houghton, by a sheriff's posse, after a crowd occupied the Westminster Courthouse to protest the evictions of several poor farmers from their homes by judges and other officials from New York. The Westminster Massacre is regarded by some Vermont historians as a key event in the history of Vermont.

Westminster is a village in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 287 at the 2020 census. Most of the village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 as the Westminster Village Historic District.

Saxtons River is an incorporated village in the town of Rockingham in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 479 at the 2020 census. For over a hundred years, Saxtons River has been the home of Vermont Academy, an independent secondary school. Most of the village is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as Saxtons River Village Historic District.

The Saxtons River is a 22.9-mile-long (36.9 km) river in the U.S. state of Vermont, a tributary of the Connecticut River. Its watershed covers 78 square miles (200 km2) and a range in altitude of 1,800 feet (550 m); land use is about 80% forested and 3% agricultural, and the upper river supports wild brook trout and brown trout, while Atlantic salmon occur but are usually limited to the area below Twin Falls on the lower river.

The Hall Covered Bridge, located in southern Rockingham, Vermont, carries Hall Bridge Road across the Saxtons River, just north of its junction with Vermont Route 121. It is a Town lattice truss bridge, built in 1982 as a replica of a circa-1867 bridge that was destroyed by an overweight truck in 1980. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Vermont Academy (VA) is a private, co-educational, college preparatory, boarding and day school in Saxtons River, Vermont, serving students from ninth through twelfth grade, as well as postgraduates. Founded in 1876, the campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Vermont Academy Campus Historic District in 2015.

North Westminster is a census-designated place (CDP) in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 262 at the 2020 census. Formerly an incorporated village, it surrendered its charter on April 20, 2010 and reverted to the town of Westminster. The village area and additional surroundings were defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as a CDP in 2012.

Putney is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,617 at the 2020 census.The town's historic core makes up the Putney Village Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel is a historic chapel, located in the Oak Hill Cemetery off Pleasant Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built about 1885, it is one of a small number of 19th-century cemetery chapels in the state, and is the most modestly decorated of those, with vernacular Gothic Revival elements. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The Adams Gristmill Warehouse is a historic industrial building on Bridge Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built about 1925 by Frank Adams & Co., proprietors of the Adams Gristmill, it is a well-preserved example of a functional railroad-related industrial warehouse. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Stephen Rowe Bradley House is a historic house at 43 Westminster Street in Walpole, New Hampshire. The large Federal style mansion house was built c. 1808 for Francis Gardner, a lawyer and state legislator. From 1817 to 1830 it was the home of Stephen Rowe Bradley, a Vermont lawyer, judge, and politician, who played a significant role in Vermont's entry into the United States as the fourteenth state, representing the independent Vermont Republic in negotiations over its boundaries. This house is the only known surviving location associated with Bradley's life. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Windham-5 Representative District is a two-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Windham-5 District includes all of the Windham County towns of Dummerston and Putney, and the portion of the town of Westminster not included in Windham-4. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The two member Windham-5 District had a population of 7,425 in that same census, 8.54% below the state average.
