Duxbury, Massachusetts

Duxbury is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Duxbury in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,802 at the 2010 census.

Duxbury High School is a public high school located in the town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, United States, and operating in the Duxbury Public School District. The superintendent of the Duxbury Public School District is Danielle Klingaman, the assistant superintendent is Beth Wilcox and the principal of Duxbury High School is Todd Warmington. The building that houses the Duxbury Middle and High School is located at 71 Alden Street, Duxbury, MA and was newly constructed in 2014. The Duxbury High School mascot is the Dragons and its school colors are green, white, and silver.

The Nathaniel Winsor Jr. House is a historic house located at 479 Washington Street Duxbury, Massachusetts. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. The house is a contributing property in Duxbury's Old Shipbuilder's Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Old Shipbuilder's Historic District is a 287-acre (116 ha) historic district in Duxbury, Massachusetts. The district includes both sides of Washington Street extending from South Duxbury (also known as Hall's Corner) to Powder Point Avenue, including several side streets off of Washington and a small portion of St. George Street and Powder Point Avenue. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In 1986, the district included 143 buildings deemed to contribute to the historic character of the area.

The Bluefish River is a stream in Duxbury, Massachusetts ending in a tidal river estuary that was the center of an active shipbuilding industry during the early 19th century. Its source is a set of small ponds located near the intersection of Partridge Road and Washington Street, about one-third of a mile from Hall's Corner in Duxbury. The river is fed by Hounds Ditch Brook which empties into the Bluefish at the tidal estuary. The river contains Duxbury’s second anadromous fish run, with a privately-owned fish ladder south of Harrison Street. A large portion of the northern shore of the Bluefish River estuary is occupied by the Capt. David Cushman Preserve operated by the Wildlands Trust which contains walking trails with views of the estuary. Near its mouth, the river passes under the stone Bluefish River Bridge, a local landmark and part of the Old Shipbuilders Historic District. The river discharges into Duxbury Bay between Long Point and Bumpus Park (formerly Weston's Wharf).

The Cove Street Historic District encompasses a small 19th-century neighborhood area of Duxbury, Massachusetts. Located along Cove Street north of the town center, it was developed in the early 19th century to provide housing for workers in nearby shipyards. The architecture of the district includes a variety of single-family housing styles common to the region and time period. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.

The King Caesar House is a historic house located at 120 King Caesar Road, Duxbury, Massachusetts. It is operated as a non-profit museum by the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. The Federal style house, completed in 1809, was built for Ezra Weston II (1772–1842) and his wife, Jerusha Bradford Weston (1770–1833). Like his father, Weston was known as "King Caesar" for his success in shipbuilding and shipping. During the 1830s and 1840s, the firm of E. Weston & Sons ran the largest mercantile operation on the South Shore of Massachusetts. In 1841, U.S. Senator Daniel Webster, during a speech in Saratoga Springs, New York, made the claim that Weston was "the largest ship owner, probably, in the United States."

The Pillsbury Summer House is a historic house at 45 Old Cove Road in Duxbury, Massachusetts. The two-story wood-frame house was built in 1938, and is a locally distinctive early example of Modern architecture, as the first major work of architect Sarah Pillsbury Harkness, and as a rare regional example of a Modern summer house. The house was designed by Harkness for her parents, in collaboration with Eleanor Raymond. The house was built in the same year that Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius built his house in Lincoln, Massachusetts; this house differs from his in that it draws more organically on New England traditional architecture.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Wright Memorial Library, more commonly known as the "Wright Building," is a historic library at 147 St. George Street in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

The Captain Daniel Bradford House is a historic house in Duxbury, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in 1808 by Captaian Daniel Bradford, on land belonging to his father, Colonel Gamaliel Bradford. It is five bays wide and three deep, with a hip roof and large central chimney. The front entry is flanked by sidelight windows and pilasters, above which are a fanlight and a gable. A two-story ell is attached to the right side of the house.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The John and Priscilla Alden Family Sites is a National Historic Landmark consisting of two separate properties in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Both properties are significant for their association with John Alden, one of the settlers of the Plymouth Colony who came to America on board the Mayflower and held numerous posts of importance in the colony. Alden and his relationship with Priscilla Mullins were memorialized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in The Courtship of Miles Standish, a fictionalized narrative poem that made the story a piece of American folklore. One of the two properties contains the archaeological remains of the house that Alden built c. 1630, and is also significant in the field of historical archaeology as the mature field work of Roland W. Robbins (1908–1987), an early historical archaeologist. It is on land owned by the Town of Duxbury. On the second property stands a house which was traditionally dated to c. 1653 as a work by Alden, but it has been judged by forensic analysis to have been built around 1700, probably by Alden's grandson. This property has been under the continuous ownership of the Alden family; it is now managed by a family foundation as a historic house museum.

The Art Complex Museum, located in Duxbury, Massachusetts, 33 miles (53 km) south of Boston, serves as a regional arts center and houses the collection of Carl A. Weyerhaeuser (1901-1996) and his wife Edith Greenleaf Weyerhaeuser (1912-2000). The museum is free and open to the public, with support from the Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Family Charitable Trusts and friends of the museum.The museum, situated on over 13 acres (5.3 ha) of woodland and open fields, opened in 1971. The master site planning was done by G2 Collaborative, of Waltham, Massachusetts. Works of sculpture are displayed on the grounds. A Japanese tea hut located on the site is used for formal Japanese tea ceremonies several times per year, which may be observed by the public.The museum features a gallery for rotating objects from the permanent collection, as well as temporary exhibition spaces that feature painting, sculpture, prints, and craft objects created by contemporary artists. A permanent Founders Room gallery portrays the background of Weyerhaeuser, his collection, and the building of the museum. The building also houses a reference library with over 5,000 publications.
