The Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim, founded in 1989. It is located in the square A5 of the city of Mannheim nearby the Mannheim Palace. The institute devotes itself to research on societal and political developments in Europe. Research focus is located in comparative research on Europe and the investigation of the European integration. The MZES mainly carries out basic research, financed by external funds from the German national research foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), foundations promoting scientific research, and research funds from the European Union. Furthermore, the MZES, closely related to the School of Social Sciences of the University of Mannheim, gives training and support to young social scientists, when starting their scientific careers. At present, approximately 80 social scientists and 60 students are working at the MZES. Thus, the MZES is the largest institute of the University of Mannheim, and the largest research institute of a German university in the field of the social sciences. From 1989–1998 the institute was composed of four work units: I Social structure and the Welfare State II Elections and Policy Research III Political and Social Integration IV German Democratic Republic / East Europe (1992 to 1998)In 1999, these four work units were reduced to two research departments: Research Department A, The European Societies and their Integration: since December 2021 directed by the sociologist Marc Helbling. Research Department B, The European Political Systems and their Integration: since February 2022 directed by the political scientist Thomas Bräuninger.The director and the heads of the research departments together form the executive board of the institute. The activity of the executive board and the institute is controlled by a supervisory board. The institute's research program is outlined for three years and evaluated by an international scientific advisory board. An annual report informs about the institute's activity.

Eisstadion am Friedrichspark

Eisstadion am Friedrichspark is an indoor sporting arena located in Mannheim, Germany. The capacity of the arena as an ice hockey rink was 8,200. It was the home arena of Adler Mannheim ice hockey team prior to the SAP Arena opening in 2005. It was built in 1938 and had a long history of hockey games. The greatest event was the match against Düsseldorfer EG in the 1990s when the DEG was still the biggest player in German hockey. The stadium was then filled with over 10,500 people. The arena is currently used by various inline hockey clubs, mainly ISC Mannheim, and spectator capacity has been reduced to 2,500. Friedrichspark is also the home of the MLRH Oktoberfest international inline hockey tournament. Current manager of the rink is ex-NHL player Bob Sullivan

Mannheim Observatory

The Mannheim Observatory was a tower observatory built between 1772 and 1774 in Mannheim, Germany, which remained in operation until 1880. The observatory was transferred to Karlsruhe and finally in 1898, was established on the Königstuhl near Heidelberg where today's successor institution the State Observatory Heidelberg-Königstuhl is located. The observatory tower is now owned by the city and was restored in 1905–1906, and after the Second World War. Since 1958, the tower houses studio flats.

Jesuit Church, Mannheim

The Mannheim Jesuit Church is a Catholic church of historic and artistic importance in Mannheim, Germany. Church construction was begun in 1733 and completed in 1760. It was consecrated to St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier. During the Second World War, the church suffered severe damage from air attacks; after the war it was rebuilt in its historical style using original parts. The church displays many Baroque features in its exterior and interior. The exterior includes a twin towered facade, statues of the four cardinal virtues, and a 75 m high dome. The interior includes marble pilasters, a dome decorated with scenes from the life of the order's founder, and several organs. The most important sculpture is the 1747 "Crowned Silver Madonna." The Mannheim Baroque bell was cast in 1754, and recast in 1956 into five bells. In 1975 another two bells were cast. The bells are now distributed between the exterior two towers.

The Mannheim Palace Church (German: Mannheimer Schlosskirche), founded as a court chapel, was built in the 18th century and is part of the Mannheim Palace. The church served as court chapel for the prince-electors of the Electorate of the Palatinate between 1731 and 1777 and belongs to the oldest parish churches of the Old Catholic diocese in Germany.

Angel of Peace (Mannheim)

The Angel of Peace in Mannheim is a memorial for the victims of Nazi Germany and the Second World War, which was created in 1951/52 by the sculptor Gerhard Marcks. The statues other names are Mannheimer Engel and Angel of Death; the locals call the sculpture Die schepp' Liesel (The crooked Liesel).

Konrad Adenauer Bridge

The Konrad Adenauer Bridge (in German: Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke) is one of two road bridges crossing the Rhine between the German cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen am Rhein. The other bridge is the Kurt Schumacher Bridge. The road bridge connects a network of roads from behind Mannheim Palace across the Rhine to Ludwigshafen. It carries Federal Highway 37 and a tram track. Two rail bridges are adjacent to the road bridge, carrying the Palatine Ludwig Railway and the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn line.

GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences

The GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences is the largest German infrastructure institute for the social sciences. It is headquartered in Mannheim, with a location in Cologne. With basic research-based services and consulting covering all levels of the scientific process, GESIS supports researchers in the social sciences. As of 2017, the president of GESIS is Christof Wolf. GESIS is part of the Leibniz Association and receives federal and state funding.

Mannheim Palace

Mannheim Palace (German: Mannheimer Schloss) is a large Baroque palace in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was originally the main residence of the Prince-electors of the Electorate of the Palatinate of the House of Wittelsbach until 1777. Part of the palace is used today by the University of Mannheim. The castle, which features tapestries, furniture, paintings, porcelain and silverware can be visited on a free-flow basis with audioguides.
