Entwistle railway station

Entwistle is a village in the Blackburn with Darwen unitary authority in Lancashire in the north west of England. Its name derives from the Old English ened and twisla which means a river fork frequented by ducks. The name was recorded as Hennetwisel in 1212, Ennetwysel in 1276 and Entwissell in 1311. Entwistle is situated in a fork between the Edgeworth Brook and a smaller tributary. Entwistle was originally a township in the chapelry of Turton which was part of the large ecclesiastical parish of Bolton le Moors in the hundred of Salford.Entwistle Hall is a 16th-century farmhouse which dates from the time of the Entwistle family. It is a Grade II listed building. The south facing front of the Hall still has many Tudor features including mullioned windows with dripstone headings.Entwistle railway station, situated between Darwen and Bromley Cross railway stations on the line between Blackburn and Bolton, is a request stop. The station is situated close to the Strawbury Duck public house.Nearby streams have been dammed to form the Wayoh and Turton and Entwistle Reservoirs. The area is popular with walkers, anglers and joggers. Entwistle, which lies to the north-eastern corner of the old Turton Urban District (which also includes Edgworth, Quarlton, Bradshaw, Harwood, Turton, and Longworth), is about 1,000 feet above sea level and consists of some 1,668 acres.

Turton and Entwistle Reservoir is a water reservoir in the village of Edgworth, Lancashire, England. The reservoir's existence is due to the Entwistle Dam. When constructed in 1832 the Entwistle Dam was the highest in Britain; it rises 108 feet from the base. The reservoir contains almost 750 thousand imperial gallons (roughly 3,400,000 litres) and, with the Wayoh Reservoir just below, satisfies around 50% of Bolton's need for drinking water.Entwistle Dam was designed by Thomas Ashworth, a local land surveyor, overseen by Jesse Hartley, the Liverpool Docks engineer. Other works were by Joseph Jackson, an engineer and surveyor from Bolton. It was built for the Commissioners of the Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, a group of local mill owners who obtained an enabling Act of Parliament in 1832 to regulate the supply of water in Bradshaw Brook for water power for the finishing textiles.Records suggest it was built entirely of puddle clay with no distinct core. Earth dams usually have a waterproof cutoff under their earthworks designed to stop seepage under the dam but it is doubtful whether there was any such a cutoff at Entwistle. The reservoir has a rock-cut outlet tunnel driven through the valley side rather than a culvert or pipeline and a siphon draw-off pipe. The dam is 108 ft high and 110 metres long at the crest. The present overflow channel and valve tower were added by the Bolton Corporation Water Works who took over the reservoir in 1864.

Wayoh Reservoir is a water reservoir in the town of Edgworth, Lancashire, England. It was completed on 28 April 1876 to supply water to Bolton. Wayoh, together with the Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, make up 50% of Bolton's drinking water.In 1962 in response to an increasing demand for drinking water in Bolton, a treatment plant was built and the reservoir enlarged to its present capacity of 501 million imperial gallons (2.28 Gl). Today the treatment plant can supply almost 10 million imperial gallons (45 Ml) of drinking water per day.The reservoir is crossed by the earlier built Armsgrove Viaduct; which was built between 1847 and 1848 by the Blackburn, Darwen and Bolton Railway to bridge Bradshaw Brook.

The West Pennine Moors is an area of the Pennines covering approximately 90 square miles (230 km2) of moorland and reservoirs in Lancashire and Greater Manchester, England. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.The West Pennine Moors are separated from the main Pennine range by the Irwell Valley to the east. The moorland includes Withnell, Anglezarke and Rivington Moors in the extreme west, Darwen and Turton Moors, Oswaldtwistle Moors and Holcombe Moors. These moors are lower in height than the main spine of the South Pennines. At 1,496 feet (456 m), the highest point is at Winter Hill. The area is of historical importance with archaeological evidence of human activity from Neolithic times. The area is close to urban areas, the dramatic backdrop to Bolton, Blackburn and Bury and neighbouring towns affording panoramic views across the Lancashire Plain and the Greater Manchester conurbation. The moorland is surrounded by the towns of Bolton, Chorley, Darwen, Horwich, Ramsbottom, Haslingden and Oswaldtwistle. Notable structures include Rivington Pike Tower, Winter Hill transmitting station, Peel Monument near Holcombe and the Jubilee Tower on Darwen Moor. United Utilities owns around 40% of the land for water catchment. The company operates four information centres at Rivington, Jumbles Country Park, Roddlesworth and Haslingden Grane.

Turton Football Club is a football club based in Edgworth, in the North Turton district of Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire, England. They are currently members of the West Lancashire League Premier Division and play at Thomason Fold. The club are affiliated to the Lancashire Football Association.

Turton and Edgworth railway station, located at 4 miles, 856 yards from Bolton, on the Bolton to Blackburn line, opened as Chapel Town Station. The short length original low height platform seen in early photographs at the front of the station building are replicated exactly at Bromley Cross, itself known to have opened in June 1848. Permanent station buildings were provided along the line in 1859, constructed with locally quarried sandstone, by Joseph Greenup and Co of Manchester. The original minutes of the railway company held at National Archives, Kew, reveal that the engineers drew up the plans for the 1859 building at Chapel Town and minute 273, dated 25 May 1859, reveals that tenders were sought for a station and detached cottage and loading shed at Chapel Town, at an estimated cost of £500. The 'detached cottage' survives as a private house close to the automated level crossing and the distinct two-half structure there appears identical to that surviving at the former Oaks Station, down the line towards Bolton, both being built as part of the same contract. The original name Chapel Town became Turton in 1877 and finally Turton & Edgworth in 1891. Station improvement works were carried out at the station in 1886 and a report published in The Bolton Chronicle revealed that 'the improvements at Turton Station are now completed by Mr Riley of Fleetwood, one of the best railway contractors in Lancashire.' The report told of two new waiting rooms on the Blackburn side, whilst on the platform for Bolton 'the booking office and old waiting rooms have been remodelled, with additional accommodation for the company's officials and passengers.' The original stone building was expanded to provide a ladies' waiting room, a general waiting room, lamp room and porters' room, with the booking office also extended. The works began in February 1886. and also included the raising of platform heights and the installation of the footbridge. The station also exhibited a large outside wall platform clock, as confirmed by early 1900s photographs and still seen at 'sister' station Bromley Cross today. The station closed to passengers in February 1961, but continued to deal with coal traffic in the sidings to the rear of the building. This facility was withdrawn in December 1964, the connections to the yard being removed in February 1965. Full demolition of the 1859 sandstone station buildings took place in the years following and all that remains are a few scattered large stone blocks under an overgrown area. Its neighbouring stations are still operational, Entwistle being an unmanned platform halt, but Bromley Cross with its staffed booking office. There have been calls to reopen the station by the Ribble Valley Rail user group.

Chapeltown is a village of the civil parish of North Turton, in the Blackburn with Darwen unitary authority, in the north west of England. It is on the B6391 road, on the southern slopes of the West Pennine Moors. The village was once the historic centre of the old Turton Urban District. The village consists mainly of 18th- and 19th-century terraced stone cottages. The tight clustering of properties along High Street is typical of villages with medieval origins. There is a small public garden containing the old village stocks and market cross. Their timber elements have been renewed several times, but the stone bases are original. Chapeltown is the location of St Anne's Church, Turton. Turton Tower lies to the west of the village centre. The local pub is the Chetham Arms, named after Humphrey Chetham. Chapeltown is part of the Rossendale and Darwen constituency. Jake Berry has been the Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen since 2010.

St Anne's Church is a Grade II listed building in Chapeltown, Turton, in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire, England. It is an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Manchester and is part of the Deanery of Walmsley and Archdeaconry of Bolton.

Cheetham Close is a megalithic site and scheduled ancient monument located in Lancashire, very close to the boundary with Greater Manchester, England. The megalith was in good condition until a farmer from Turton sledgehammered the circle in the 1870s. According to an article published in 1829, Cheetham Close was once a druidical ritual place and a Roman road passed 'within two hundred yards' of the megalith.The stone circle at Cheetham Close measured about 18.5 metres (61 ft) in diameter. Six stones are definitely part of the circle and other smaller stones are scattered about the place. The monument has been damaged, and the stones fractured.

North Turton is a civil parish of the unitary authority of Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire, England. According to the United Kingdom Census 2001 the civil parish has a population of 3,736, increasing to 3,867 at the 2011 Census. North Turton is the northern part of the historic area of Turton.

Turton Tower is a manor house in Chapeltown in North Turton, Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire, England. It is a scheduled ancient monument and a grade I listed building.It was built in the late Middle Ages as a two-storey stone pele tower which was altered and enlarged mainly in late 16th century. It is built on high ground 600 feet above sea level about four miles north of Bolton. William Camden described it as being built "amongst precipices and wastes." A north wing and additions were made during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and alterations were made during the early years of Queen Victoria.
