Mount Sugarloaf, also known as Great Sugar Loaf, is a mountain in the lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, standing at 412 metres (1,352 feet), it looks over the cities of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland. The summit of the mountain is in the Lake Macquarie suburb of West Wallsend and access to the summit is gained via this suburb. However, the mountain itself is also part of the city of Cessnock suburbs Mulbring and Richmond Vale. It is home to television transmitters that broadcast to the lower Hunter region. On 18 and 19 July 1965, the mountain received 10 centimetres (4 in) of snow. It also snowed on the summit in the winter of 1975.

Westside Mine is a former coal mine located at Wakefield, New South Wales, Australia. The open cut mine was developed to provide coal for the Eraring Power Station. The mine started in 1992 and closed in February 2012 due to exhaustion of mineable reserves.: 5 (PDF page 15) The mine site is being rehabilitated following most equipment being removed. The mine area has been reshaped to remove any high walls and covered with topsoil and seeded with native vegetation. During the last nine years of the mine's life, it was operated under contract by Thiess Australian Mining and was the most productive mine in the Hunter Valley region measured by production tonnes per team member. The rehabilitated mine site has second generation flora and seven threatened species of wildlife have been observed.

Seahampton is a hamlet situated north of West Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia, located 21 kilometres (13 mi) west of the city of Newcastle's central business district and west of the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. It is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area. Seahampton's origins are in coal mining. Seaham No. 1 Colliery was opened here on 6 March 1890 by the Monkwearmouth Coal Company which was reformed and renamed the Seaham Coal Company Ltd., in 1896. The shaft was 460 feet (140 m) deep and serviced the Borehole seam which here was about five feet nine inches thick. Its peak production was 1,450 tons per day and the coal was shipped via the company's private railway to the New South Wales Government line at Cockle Creek Junction. The colliery closed on 7 July 1932, during the Great Depression, and never re-opened. The township of Seahampton was surveyed in 1889 to provide homesites for colliery employees.
