John Muir National Historic Site

The Vicente Martínez Adobe is an historic adobe house near Martinez, California. The house was built in 1849 by Vicente J. Martínez on the Rancho El Pinole, a land grant that had been given to his father, Ygnacio Martínez, in 1836. It was the first of its kind built in Contra Costa County. In 1853 the adobe was sold Edward Franklin, after whom the canyon where the adobe sits was named. The adobe became known as the Franklin Canyon Adobe.The building is a two-story ranch house typical of Californian design in the mid-19th century. The walls of the house are of thick adobe brick, the foundation consists of rough-cut stone. An internal adobe wall divides each floor into two rooms. The front and southern sides of the house have wooden wrap-around porches at each level. Wood shingles of either cedar or redwood originally covered the roof.The Martínez Adobe is now part of the John Muir National Historic Site and is open to the public.

The Muir Trestle, or Alhambra Trestle, is a railway trestle bridge in Martinez, California located within the John Muir National Historic Site. It is owned and operated by BNSF Railway and carries their Stockton Subdivision.

Alhambra Senior High School (AHS) is a public high school in Martinez, California, United States which was first established in 1897. It is a part of the Martinez Unified School District. During the 2006-2007 academic year, the school had enrollment of approximately 1400 students. Alhambra plays an active role in the community, with students participating in extracurricular sports, theatre, music, mentoring, and outreach programs as well as numerous community events. The school's mascot is "Spike" the bulldog, who can often be seen in appearances with "Spikette" at football games and rallies.

The Spanish name of the valley was Cañada del Hambre "Valley of Hunger"; it was adapted into English with obvious influence from "Alhambra".

Most graduates of the school attend Alhambra High School (Martinez, California), Carondelet High School, or De La Salle High School (Concord, California). Located in the Downtown area of Martinez, the school's north facing wall features a mural of John Muir, the famed naturalist whose home is merely a few minutes down the street driving toward Interstate Highway 4. The school has a CYO program that consists of basketball, cross country, track and field, and cheerleading (the first cheer squad in the Oakland Diocese). The girls basketball team has had much success in recent years with many diocese victories.

The Tucker House is located in Martinez, California. Originally located at 40 Escobar Street, this luxurious 4 story, 4 bedroom, 2 bath mansion was built for Captain John Tucker, a former sea captain from Nantucket, Massachusetts, who settled in Martinez, become a wheat farmer and built a mansion atop the hill on Escobar Street in 1877. The persons who moved into the house included not only the Captain, but also his wife, Mary Swain Tucker, Mary's brother, Sylvester Swain, Swain's wife and daughter, and a Chinese servant known only as Vu. On Halloween, October 31, 1880, Captain Tucker died. The house was moved to 110 Escobar St. in the 1920s by City Postmaster Franklin Glass. After the house had been moved, it had served as a bordello for a while during the 1920s and 30s.

Martinez station is an Amtrak passenger train station in Martinez, California, United States. Located at the west end of downtown Martinez, the station has one side platform and one island platform, which serve three of the four tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad Martinez Subdivision. It is served by the daily California Zephyr and Coast Starlight long-distance trains, five daily round trips of the San Joaquin corridor service, and fifteen daily round trips (eleven on weekends) of the Capitol Corridor service. Martinez is also served by Amtrak Thruway buses plus County Connection, Tri-Delta Transit, and WestCAT local buses.
