Liège Cathedral

Liège ( lee-EZH, lee-AYZH, French: [ljɛʒ] (listen), locally [li.eːʃ]; Walloon: Lîdje [liːtʃ]; Dutch: Luik [lœyk] (listen); German: Lüttich [ˈlʏtɪç] (listen)) is a major city and municipality of Wallonia and the capital of the Belgian province of Liège. The city is situated in the valley of the Meuse, in the east of Belgium, not far from borders with the Netherlands (Maastricht is about 33 km (20.5 mi) to the north) and with Germany (Aachen is about 53 km (32.9 mi) north-east). In Liège, the Meuse meets the river Ourthe. The city is part of the sillon industriel, the former industrial backbone of Wallonia. It still is the principal economic and cultural centre of the region. The municipality consists of the following districts: Angleur, Bressoux, Chênée, Glain, Grivegnée, Jupille-sur-Meuse, Liège, Rocourt, and Wandre. In November 2012, Liège had 198,280 inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,879 km2 (725 sq mi) and had a total population of 749,110 on 1 January 2008. This includes a total of 52 municipalities, among others, Herstal and Seraing. Liège ranks as the third most populous urban area in Belgium, after Brussels and Antwerp, and the fourth municipality after Antwerp, Ghent and Charleroi.

Théâtre de Liège is a theatre in Liège, Belgium.The theatre briefly became the subject of notoriety in July 2015 after it was found that its logo, designed by local designer Olivier Debie, had been plagiarized by the designer of the emblem for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Debie filed a lawsuit against the International Olympic Committee to prevent use of the infringing logo, which was withdrawn in September 2015 and replaced by a new design.

The Diocese of Liège (Latin: Dioecesis Leodiensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. The diocese was erected in the 4th century and presently covers the same territory as Belgium's Liège Province, but it was historically much larger. Currently, the diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Its cathedra is found within St Paul's Cathedral in the episcopal see of Liège.

The Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) is a leading public agricultural university in Cambodia. It is located in Dangkao Section, southwest Phnom Penh. The university is operated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The University of Liège (French: Université de Liège), or ULiège, is a major public university of the French Community of Belgium based in Liège, Wallonia, Belgium. Its official language is French. As of 2020, ULiège is ranked in the 301–350 category worldwide according to Times Higher Education, 451st by QS World University Rankings, and between the 201st and 300th place by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. More than 2,000 people, including academics, scientists and technicians, are involved in research of a wide variety of subjects from basic research to applied research.

The Opéra royal de Wallonie (French; "Royal Opera of Wallonia") is an opera house located on the Place de l'Opéra, in Liège, Belgium. Together with La Monnaie and the Vlaamse Opera, the Opéra royal, as it is colloquially known, is one of the three major opera houses in Belgium. From the beginning, the institution occupied the Théâtre royal in Liège, a building loaned by the city (inaugurated on 4 November 1820).

The Société littéraire de Liège was a literary society in Liège. It was set up on 5 April 1779 by François-Charles de Velbrück during his reign as prince bishop of Liege. It aimed to provide its members with newspapers and books in a convivial atmosphere, on the model of other literary societies of the time, like the Cabinet littéraire de Verviers, the Société littéraire de Huy, the Société royale littéraire de Hasselt, the Cercle de l’Union de Maastricht, the "Aachener Casino Club" in Aachen, the Société littéraire de Gand, the Société de littérature de Bruxelles (whose successor, the Société des Douze, is still active), and the famous Gabinetto Vieusseux. It is still active and provides cultural activities and meeting for its members. It has reciprocal ties with the Cercle Gaulois in Brussels and publishes a quarterly newsletter entitled Lettre de la Littéraire.

St James's Church (French - Eglise Saint-Jacques) is a church dedicated to James the Less in the Belgian city of Liège, founded in 1015 by bishop Baldrick II as the church for a Benedictine abbey. On the demolition of St Peter's Church it became one of the seven collegiate churches in the city. Its chapter was abolished in 1801 and the church converted into a parish church. It retains its original Romanesque narthex on the west side, whilst the rest of the church is in the late Gothic style, with richly-decorated nave vaulting dating to between 1514 and 1538. Lambert Lombard added a Renaissance-style porch, whilst several 16th century stained glass windows survive in the church itself and the 17th century limewood sculptures down both sides of the nave are by Jean Del Cour.

The Church of St. Denis (French: Collégiale Saint-Denis) is a parish church in Liège, Belgium. The fortified building was designed to be part of the city's defences. It was founded by Notker of Liège in 987 and first consecrated on 12 March 990. The tower was added around 1100.

The Collège en Isle (in Latin Gymnasium Societatis Iesu in insula, Leodii) was a Jesuit secondary school located on the île de la Meuse in the Principality of Liège. Founded in 1582, it passed into other hands on the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. Its pedagogical tradition was continued by the collège Saint-Servais, founded in Liège in 1828.

The Diocesan Seminary of Liège (in French: Séminaire épiscopal or Grand Séminaire de Liège), now also Espace Prémontrés, is an educational institution in the Diocese of Liège, founded in 1592.

The Archéoforum is an archaeological museum on place Saint-Lambert in Liège in Belgium. It is centered on the ruins of Saint Lambert's Cathedral and also includes the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa as well as displaying objects from the Mesolithic onward.
