Cliburn, Cumbria

Cliburn railway station was a station situated on the Eden Valley Railway in Westmorland (now in Cumbria), England. It served the village of Cliburn to the south. The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 17 September 1956.

Cliburn Moss is a national nature reserve located northwest of the village of Cliburn, in the county of Cumbria, England. It contains wetland habitats, produced by a hollow in the glacial valley. The 26 ha site was designated as a national nature reserve in 1996. Prior to becoming a protected area, it was affected by the human activities of peat cutting and drainage. The reserve is managed with the aims of restoring areas of fen, heath and mire and controlling the spread of trees.

The River Leith is a watercourse in Cumbria, a county of northwestern England. Rising at Shap, the Leith flows north alongside the M6 motorway via Great and Little Strickland before turning eastward at Melkinthorpe. Having passed through Cliburn, the Leith flows into the River Lyvennet at Cliburn Mill.

St Lawrence's Church is in the village of Morland, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Appleby, the archdeaconry of Carlisle, and the diocese of Carlisle. The parish of Morland includes the historic parish of Thrimby, with its church of St Mary, Little Strickland. The benefice of Morland is united, under the name North Westmorland, with the parishes of Askham and Lowther, Bampton, Bolton, Cliburn, Clifton and Brougham, Crosby Ravensworth, Shap and Great Strickland. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has the only Anglo-Saxon tower in Cumbria.

Crossrigg Hall is a country house in the civil parish of Bolton, Cumbria in the northern United Kingdom. It was built in 1864 by Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Rigg of the Indian Army's Madras Infantry. Designed by Anthony Salvin, and with later additions by J. H. Martindale, the hall is a Grade II* listed building.

Morland is a village and civil parish in the rolling hills of the Eden Valley in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. It lies within the historic county of Westmorland. The parish includes the hamlets of Town Head and Morland Moor, and had a population of 380 in 2001, reducing marginally to 374 at the 2011 Census.

Whinfell Forest is a small area of woodland in the parish of Brougham, Cumbria, south east of Penrith in Cumbria and just off the A66 road leading to Appleby-in-Westmorland. The forest is a short distance from the Lake District national park and is surrounded by a large number of woodlands west of the Pennines. It is notable today for the presence of Center Parcs and a red squirrel reserve. It was notable historically for its associations with Lady Anne Clifford, Brougham Castle and Inglewood Forest.

The River Lyvennet is a river flowing through the county of Cumbria in England. The source of the Lyvennet (as Lyvennet Beck) is to be found close to Robin Hood's Grave on Crosby Ravensworth Moor, an area rich in ancient remains. From there, the beck flows northwards through Crosby Ravensworth, Mauld's Meaburn and King's Meaburn, emerging as the River Lyvennet. The river is joined by the River Leith shortly before the Lyvennet's own confluence with the River Eden. Several Pedigree cattle herds are named after the river including Lyvennet Simmentals of Greystone House, King's Meaburn. The Lyvennet valley may preserve the name of Taliesin's "Llwyfenydd" and would thus be associated with the post-Roman Brythonic kingdom of Rheged. The meaning of the Welsh word "llwyfen" is the elm tree.

Newby is a village and civil parish in the Eden district of the county of Cumbria, England. It is about 7 miles (11 km) from the large town of Penrith and about 5 miles (8 km) from the small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, and has a population of 164. Nearby is Newby Beck. Newby has a post office. The population at the 2011 Census was less than 100 and data was included with Sleagill.

Temple Sowerby railway station was a railway station situated on the Eden Valley Railway between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen East. It served the village of Temple Sowerby. The station opened to passenger traffic on 9 June 1862, and closed on 7 December 1953. It is now a private residence.

Temple Sowerby is a village and civil parish in Cumbria, northern England. It is close to the main east–west A66 road about 8 miles (13 km) east of Penrith in the Eden Valley. At the 2011 census Temple Sowerby was grouped with Newbiggin giving a total population of 528.At the centre of the village is the village green surrounded by cottages and houses, the village hall, Church of England primary school and a public house and hotel. Just outside the village stands the cricket pitch, a bowling green, the new doctors surgery and the Temple Sowerby garage. The National Trust property Acorn Bank is nearby, which dates back to the days of the crusades when a member of the Knights Templar lived there. The village's association with the Knights Templar gave it the name 'Temple'. Sowerby is Viking for "a homestead with poor soil".

Great Strickland is a village and civil parish in the Eden Valley between the Cumbrian mountains in the west and the Pennines in the east. It is 5 miles (8.0 km) south east of Penrith, and is in the former county of Westmorland. At the 2011 Census Great Strickland was grouped with Little Strickland, itself enlarged to include Thrimby after 2001, to give a total population of 370. The equivalent figure from the 2001 census was 342.The sandstone village church is dedicated to Saint Barnabas and was constructed in 1872. It has a bell turret.To the west of the village lies the River Leith, the West Coast Main Line and the M6 Motorway. To the south lies the small settlement of Little Strickland.
