Shinnecock Hills station

Shinnecock Hills is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 2,188 at the 2010 census. It is the home of a leading golf club, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Ownership of the area has been the subject of a 2005 lawsuit filed by the Shinnecock Indian Nation. Shinnecock Hills is in the Town of Southampton.

WLIW-FM (88.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to Southampton, New York and serving eastern Long Island and coastal Connecticut. Owned by The WNET Group, it is a sister station to PBS member television station WLIW, and features programming from American Public Media, NPR and Public Radio Exchange. The station also broadcasts in HD.It is the only NPR station based on Long Island (population about 8 million). It is one of three public radio stations broadcast to eastern Long Island. The other stations are Connecticut-based WNPR, WSHU-FM and WSUF, which access the market via repeater stations.In addition to its to NPR programming, local programs include jazz, rhythm and blues, world music and music from Broadway theater, as well as "Heart of the East End" with Gianna Volpe, "The Afternoon Ramble" with Brian Cosgrove and "The Urban Jazz Experience" with Ed German.

Suffolk Downs was a seasonal flag stop along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road and was first built in 1907. The depot was purchased by an LIRR employee and was moved to Peconic Bay at an undisclosed location on February 6, 1923 and the station stop itself closed around 1927. The station stop was located between Canoe Place and Shinnecock Hills Stations, near the grade crossing at Peconic Road.

Sebonack Golf Club is a private golf course in Southampton, New York, located on the Great Peconic Bay on Long Island. Opened in 2006, the course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The Clubhouse and guest cottages were designed by Hart Howerton.When it opened, Sebonack was noted as one of the priciest private clubs, with membership starting at half a million dollars. It is owned by Michael Pascucci.Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women's Open, the first time the championship had been played on Long Island and the first in the greater New York City area since 1987.

It was first time the championship was played on Long Island and marked a return to the greater New York City area, which last hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1987. Inbee Park won her second U.S. Women's Open title, four strokes ahead of runner-up I.K. Kim. It was Park's fourth major title and third consecutive in 2013. She is the first to win the opening three majors of a season since Babe Zaharias in 1950. The event was televised by ESPN and NBC Sports. The U.S. Women's Open is the oldest of the five current major championships and was the third of the 2013 season. Along with The Evian Championship, it had the largest purse in women's golf in 2013, at $3.25 million. It is one of 16 individual or team championships conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA).

National Golf Links of America is a prestigious links-style golf course in Southampton, New York, located on Long Island between Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and Peconic Bay. Though the course is noted for hosting the initial Walker Cup in 1922, which the United States won 8 and 4, it has never hosted a major men's championship. The Walker Cup was again held at the National in 2013. The private club has been called "America's snootiest golf course" due to its exclusive nature.

The 1922 Walker Cup, the first Walker Cup Match, was a team golf match played on August 28 and 29, 1922 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York. The United States won 8 to 4. There had been heavy rain for several days before the event and course was very wet.

The 44th Walker Cup Match was played on September 7 and 8, 2013 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York. The United States won 17 to 9.

The 1924 Walker Cup, the third Walker Cup Match, was a team golf match played on September 12 and 13, 1924 at the Garden City Golf Club in Garden City, New York. The United States won 9 to 3.. This was the last annual Match before it became biennial with the next match being held in 1926

Southampton Campus was a rail station located along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Originally a seasonal flag stop called Golf Grounds, it opened April 1907 to serve sites such as the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and National Golf Links of America and was closed in 1938.In order to serve the Long Island University's Southampton College (now owned by Stony Brook University) it reopened on May 24, 1976. It was discontinued as a station stop and removed on March 16, 1998, due to low usage, along with a handful of other Long Island Rail Road stations. The station only had an average daily ridership of 16 and the low ridership did not make it cost effective for high level platforms to be installed to accommodate new bilevel rail cars.A temporary station was opened in June 2004 for the U.S. Open and was listed as Shinnecock Hills on special timetables. The same situation occurred in 2018 during the 2018 U.S. Open Golf Championship. The Long Island Rail Road also provided service for spectators traveling to the 1986 U.S. Open, when the station was called Southampton College.
