East Buckland

East and West Buckland is a civil parish in the English county of Devon. Forming part of the district of North Devon its main settlements are West Buckland and East Buckland. These were separate civil parishes until their merger on 1 April 1986.

Castle Hill in the parish of Filleigh in North Devon, is an early Neo-Palladian country house situated 3 miles (5 kilometres) north-west of South Molton and 8 mi (13 km) south-east of Barnstaple. It was built in 1730 by Hugh Fortescue, 14th Baron Clinton (1696–1751), who was later created in 1751 1st Baron Fortescue and 1st Earl of Clinton, the son of Hugh Fortescue (died 1719), lord of the manor of Filleigh, Weare Giffard, etc., whose family is earliest recorded as residing in the 12th century at the manor of Whympston in the parish of Modbury in South Devon. The Fortescue family became major land owners, influential in British and West Country history. Castle Hill is a rare example in Devon of an 18th-century country mansion "on the grand scale".The house was substantially reconstructed following a disastrous fire in 1934. It was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967. The park and gardens are Grade I listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Today the property is leased by Eleanor, Countess of Arran (born 1949), the granddaughter of Hugh Fortescue, 5th Earl Fortescue (1888–1958).

Bremridge Wood formerly part of the Domesday Book estate of Bremridge near South Molton, Devon, England, is the site of an Iron Age enclosure or hill fort. The earthwork is situated in woodland on a Hillside forming a promontory above the River Bray to the West of the Town at approx 175 Metres above Sea Level.

Bremridge is a historic estate within the former hundred of South Molton in Devon, England. It is now within the parish of Filleigh but was formerly in that of South Molton. It is situated 8 miles north-west of South Molton. Since the construction of the nearby A361 North Devon Link Road direct access has been cut off from Bremridge to Filleigh and South Molton. The surviving wing of the mansion house built in 1654 is a Grade II* listed building. Bremridge Wood is the site of an Iron Age enclosure or hill fort, the earthwork of which is situated on a hillside forming a promontory above the River Bray. In Bremridge Wood survives a disused tunnel of the former Great Western Railway line between South Molton and Barnstaple, much of the course of which has been used for the A361. The tunnel is 319 yards long and was identified as "Bremridge Tunnel" in the 1889 Ordnance Survey map but as "Castle Hill Tunnel" in subsequent editions.

Brayford is a village and civil parish in Devon, England, situated about 5 miles (8.0 km) from South Molton and 6 miles (9.7 km) from Barnstaple. It lies on Exmoor and sits beneath open areas of common land. It is a small rural community and in the surrounding area are many farms. Brayford is around 1 mile from the hamlet of Charles and is also host to several quarries. The village can be found along the Ilfracombe - South Molton Road in North Devon, and is also near to the North Devon Link Road which connects the area with the M5. The large Brayford Quarry lies on the outskirts of the village. It is operated by Hansons but remains an asset of Archibald Nott & Sons.

West Buckland is a small village and former manor, now in the parish of East and West Buckland, in the North Devon district, in the county of Devon, England. South Molton is the nearest town, Barnstaple is 8 miles (13 km) west-north-west. The hamlet of Elwell lies to its north-east. In 1961 the parish had a population of 251.

High Bray is a village, church of England parish and former civil parish, now in the parish of Brayford, in the North Devon district, in the county of Devon, England. In 1961 the civil parish had a population of 150. On 1 April 1986 the parish was abolished and merged with Charles to form Brayford.Wildlife filmmaker Johnny Kingdom was born and grew up in the village.

Filleigh is a small village, civil parish and former manor in North Devon, on the southern edge of Exmoor, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of South Molton. The village centre's street was, until the 1980s opening of the North Devon Link Road, the main highway between the North Devon administrative centre of Barnstaple and South Molton, leading westwards to Taunton. Much of the village's land is contained within grade I listed park and garden, Castle Hill, which straddles both sides of the Link Road providing a glimpse of some of it.

Charles is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Brayford, in the North Devon district of Devon, England. Its nearest town is South Molton, which lies approximately 4.7 miles (7.6 km) south-east from the hamlet, just off the A399 road. In 1961 the parish had a population of 203. On 1 April 1986 the parish was abolished and merged with Brayford.

Mockham Down is the site of an Iron Age hill fort close to Brayfordhill in Devon, England. It takes the form of a multi-ditch and rampart enclosure close to the top of the hill known as Mockham Down at an elevation of 310 m (1,020 ft). There is a smaller enclosure 2 km (1.2 mi) to the west on the next hill at an elevation of 265 m (869 ft).

Benton is a village in Devon, England, within the civil parish of Bratton Fleming.

South Molton Rural District was a rural district in the administrative county of Devon, England, from 1894 to 1974, covering an area in the north of the county. The district was named after the town of South Molton and had its offices there. The town itself was initially excluded from the rural district, being a self-governing municipal borough. In 1967 the town was absorbed into the district. The district was abolished in 1974, when the area became part of the new district of North Devon.
