St. Mark's African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. St. Mark's has played a central role in Duluth's African-American community for more than 125 years. While other black organizations have dissolved or moved to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, St. Mark's has been a local mainstay.The lower level of the building was constructed in 1900 and the Gothic Revival upper level was completed in 1913. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 for its local significance in the themes of black ethnic heritage and social history. It was nominated for serving as a religious and social center for Duluth's African-American community, and for its status as the city's only historic building constructed by and for African Americans.

Adas Israel Congregation (or Adath Israel Congregation, but known locally as the 3rd Street Shul) was a Modern Orthodox Jewish synagogue located in Duluth, Minnesota, established in the late 19th century. Until its destruction by arson on September 9, 2019, it was the oldest surviving Orthodox synagogue in Duluth having outlived and incorporated several Orthodox synagogues in the Twin Ports area. By 1973, it was the only Orthodox synagogue in Duluth.It could also be described as a Jewish "traditionalist" congregation because in official communal guidelines it is officially described as "an Orthodox/high Conservative congregation" meaning that its members are composed of some Orthodox Jews as well as those who practice an older form of traditional Judaism. It is described as having a membership of 75. Services are lay-led with daily minyans, Saturday morning and holiday services.On September 9, 2019, the 3rd Street synagogue was destroyed by a fire that was caused by arson.

The Pickwick Restaurant and Pub in Duluth, Minnesota began in 1888 as the “Old Saloon," a tasting bar located within the Fitger Brewing Company. It survived a move, prohibition and the Great Depression to be in business for 124 years, with many relics from 19th century intact. In 2007, they won a James Beard Foundation Award as an America’s Classic.

Fitger's Brewing Company was a beer manufacturer in Duluth, Minnesota, United States, from 1881 to 1972. The surviving brewery complex stretches for 720 feet (220 m) along the Lake Superior shoreline and East Superior Street, one of Duluth's main roads. The majority of the ten-building complex was constructed between 1886 and 1911. Fitger's, as it is now known, has undergone adaptive reuse as an indoor mall with shops, restaurants, nightclubs, a hotel, and a museum on the brewery's history.Fitger's Brewing Company grew directly out of a brewery established in 1859, making it the first commercial brewery at the head of Lake Superior and the oldest continuously operating brewery in the state of Minnesota until going out of business in 1972. Fitger's was a major local employer, producing 100,000 barrels of beer annually. It stayed open during Prohibition by diversifying into soda and candy bar production.

The Bergetta Moe Bakery is a historic commercial building in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Constructed around 1875, it is one of Duluth's oldest standing buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its local significance in the theme of architecture. It was nominated for exemplifying the simple wood-frame, gabled style that characterized Duluth's first-generation architecture.

The NorShor Theatre is an entertainment venue in downtown Duluth, Minnesota, and was formerly a movie palace and Opera House. It occupies a prominent place along Superior Street, and underwent a massive renovation effort by the City of Duluth. The NorShor played a significant role in the artistic history of Duluth, and is generally considered a landmark.

On June 15, 1920, three African-American circus workers, Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, suspects in an assault case, were taken from the jail and lynched by a white mob of thousands in Duluth, Minnesota. Rumors had circulated that six African Americans had raped and robbed a nineteen-year-old white woman. A physician who examined her found no physical evidence of rape. The 1920 lynchings are the only known instance of lynching of African-Americans in Minnesota. Twenty other lynchings were recorded in Minnesota, and included mainly Native Americans and Whites. Three men were convicted of rioting, but none served more than fifteen months. No one was ever prosecuted for the murders. The state of Minnesota passed anti-lynching legislation in April 1921, and lynchings have not been recorded in Minnesota since. In 2003, the city of Duluth erected a memorial to the lynched men. In 2020, Max Mason, who was convicted in court after the lynchings, was granted the first posthumous pardon in the history of the state.

The Hartley Building is a historic office building in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was designed by architect Bertram Goodhue of New York City and built in 1914. The Hartley Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 for having local significance in the theme of architecture. It was nominated for its exemplary Tudor Revival architecture and its status as one of four local buildings designed by Goodhue, the only nationally recognized architect to produce multiple commissions in early Duluth.Goodhue's other Duluth works are the Kitchi Gammi Club (1912), St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1912), and the Cavour Hartley House (1915).

The Kitchi Gammi Club is the oldest incorporated club in the U.S. state of Minnesota, founded in 1883. Its historic clubhouse in Duluth, Minnesota, was built from 1912 to 1913. In 1975 the clubhouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its state-level significance in the theme of architecture. It was nominated for its fine Georgian/Gothic Revival design by Bertram Goodhue and its superlative craftsmanship.

East Hillside is a neighborhood in the City of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. East 4th Street serves as one of the main thoroughfares in the community, as well as a small business corridor. In addition to housing both renters and home owners, East Hillside is the site of many of the major hospitals and clinics that serve Duluth and its surrounding areas. Many families use Myers-Wilkins Elementary School, the Grant Recreation Facility, as well as many of the other parks located within the neighborhood. Chester Creek flows through at the eastern edge of the neighborhood.

Fire Station No. 1 is a former fire station in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. The two-building complex was constructed in 1889. It was one of the first fire stations in Duluth, built as the city transitioned from a volunteer fire department to a professional municipal agency. The station consists of a Romanesque Revival engine house and a plainer stable/shop building which wraps around it in an L.Fire Station No. 1 was redesignated Station No. 3 in 1897. In 1910 the Duluth Fire Department constructed a new headquarters nine blocks away. As the department acquired its tenth gas-powered fire engine near the end of that same decade, response times had decreased to the point that there was no need for another station so close to headquarters. The original Fire Station No. 1 was closed on March 1, 1918. The complex was transferred to the city's public works department as a maintenance and storage facility. No longer needed, the station's original bell tower was removed at this time. Sometime between 1925 and 1940 a second-floor passageway was added between the engine house and the shop building. In 1953 the complex was sold to Duluth Public Schools, which used it as a maintenance and storage facility for the rest of the 20th century. In 2012 the two buildings were redeveloped into an affordable housing complex.The engine house was initially listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Engine House No. 1 in 1975 for its local significance in the themes of architecture and social history. It was nominated as an example of Duluth's late-19th-century fire stations and a component of the city's formative municipal services. The nomination was updated in 2012 to recognize the stable/shop building as part of the listing.

The Northcountry Women's Coffeehouse in Duluth, Minnesota first opened in 1981. First serving as a "safe space" for women, The Coffeehouse quickly became the center for women's culture, music, and social gatherings in Duluth.
