Qualicum Bay

The Qualicum River or Big Qualicum River ("Where the Dog Salmon Run" in the Pentlatch language) is a river on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, flowing northeast from its headwaters in Horne Lake into the Strait of Georgia just south of Qualicum Bay, near the town of Qualicum Beach. The river's name comes from that of the Qualicum people.

The Dunsmuir station is located in Dunsmuir, British Columbia. The station was a flag stop on Via Rail's Dayliner service. The station is on the Southern Railway of Vancouver Island mainline, first appearing in railway maps in 1918. The station is named after Robert Dunsmuir, one of the early founders of the railway. Service ended in 2011.

Spider Lake Provincial Park is a provincial park located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It was established on June 18, 1981 to protect the ecological integrity of the lake and to provide day use visitors with recreational facilities.The park is located within the larger Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region.

Bowser ( BOUGH-zər) is a community on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It has a population of 1,729. Approximately 66 kilometres (41 mi) north of Nanaimo, Bowser is in a region informally known as Lighthouse Country, spanning a stretch of highway that extends from Qualicum Beach in the south to Horne Lake to the west and Fanny Bay in the north and east to Denman and Hornby Islands. Bowser is in the Regional District of Nanaimo and in its Electoral Area H, one of eight in the District. The community was named after William J. Bowser, premier of British Columbia from 1915 to 1916. Bowser is served by the coast-spanning Island Highway. Bowser's local hotel was famous in the 1930s for a dog trained by his owners to deliver beer bottles to tables, receive the payment, and deliver change, a feat listed in "Ripley's Believe It or Not!". Bowser has lent its name to a soil series which is widespread on eastern Vancouver Island. Bowser loamy sand is mapped under the whole community.Near the community is the Bowser Ecological Reserve, which was established in 1996 to protect part of a productive forest ecosystem. While the 113-hectare ecological reserve was created for research purposes, including surveying species regenerating after a fire that occurred in the area over 100 years prior, it is open to the public for hiking.

Oceanside is a name adopted for a group of communities on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Regional District of Nanaimo and includes the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach as well as the unincorporated communities of Nanoose Bay, Coombs, Errington, French Creek, Bowser, Deep Bay, Qualicum Bay and a few other smaller centres. The area is promoted by Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association.

Chrome Island Lighthouse is a light station established in 1891 that assists traffic in the region of Deep Bay, British Columbia, Denman Island, and Hornby Island. It is currently a manned station, though in recent years the Canadian Coast Guard has considered automating it. Along with electronic navigational aids, the five-second-flash lighthouse is about 21 metres (69 ft) above water level (depending on tides). The station has a helicopter landing deck and rescue boat. The light is one of the 12 locations of the British Columbia Shore Station Oceanographic Program, and has collected coastal water temperature and salinity measurements for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans since 1961.

Chrome Island is the site of a light station in the Salish Sea/Georgia Strait on the coast of Vancouver Island in an area known as Baynes Sound. It is 100 metres (330 ft) off the southeast tip of Denman Island and 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) east-northeast of the harbour at Deep Bay, British Columbia. The island was known as Yellow Rock until 1940, when the name was changed to prevent confusion with a similarly named island. Archaeological studies have explored evidence of a pre-contact people there, including petroglyphs, human bones and a midden of discarded shells.

Cameron Lake is a lake in central Vancouver Island located 15 km east of Port Alberni, on the north side of Highway 4. It has an area of 477 hectares and an elevation of 184 metres above sea level. The lake is between Mount Arrowsmith to the south and Mount Wesley to the north. The lake was named by Captain Richards in 1860 for David Cameron, the first Chief Justice of Vancouver Island.The entire southern shore of the lake is incorporated in the Little Qualicum Falls Provincial ParkA popular folktale is that a train came crashing down the mountain from the Island Rail Corridor, this however is false. Reports of peculiar sightings in the lake's waters and the local legend of resident lake monster, nicknamed Cammie, remain popular. In the summer of 2009, the B.C. Cryptozoology Club was not able to identify the source of earlier sightings of what may have been a large trout or something larger leading to speculation about some sort of sea serpent. In February 2016 researcher John Kirk and his team detected something big in the water, however, their underwater camera became detached. Kirk speculates the mysterious lake creature could be a giant sturgeon, a huge eel or a massive salamander.

Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, on central Vancouver Island, that encompasses the entire southern shore of Cameron Lake. The Island Rail Corridor line to Port Alberni passes through the park.

MacMillan Provincial Park is a 301-hectare (740-acre) provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. Located 25 km (16 mi) west of Qualicum Beach and 16 km (9.9 mi) east of Port Alberni, the park straddles Highway 4 and the Island Rail Corridor in central Vancouver Island. It is nestled on the western shore of Cameron Lake, and protects the delta of the Cameron River. The park is home to a famous, 157-hectare (390-acre) stand of ancient Douglas fir, known as Cathedral Grove, which draws visitors from all over the world. The park provides the only highway-accessible protected old-growth Douglas-fir forest in British Columbia. In 2007 Cathedral Grove made the short list on CBC's competition Seven Wonders of Canada.
