Pirita (subdistrict)

Pirita is one of the eight administrative districts (Estonian: linnaosa) of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Pirita occupies a relatively big area, but compared to other districts of Tallinn its population of 17,592 (as of 1 November 2014) is relatively small. It mostly consists of private houses, instead of the large blocks of flats typical of some other districts of Tallinn, such as Lasnamäe and Mustamäe. Large parts of the district consist of newly built, modern buildings and houses. Pirita Beach is located in Pirita. Pirita is one of the most prestigious and wealthiest districts of Tallinn, partly thanks to natural benefits such as its beach and yachting harbour. Pirita beach is the largest in Tallinn, and in the summer can attract up to 30,000 visitors a day.

The Pirita Velodrome (Estonian: Pirita Velodroom) is a velodrome and football stadium in the Pirita district of Tallinn, Estonia. It has 1602 seats.

The Pirita (Estonian: Pirita jõgi) is a 105 km (65 mi) long river in northern Estonia that drains into Tallinn Bay (part of the Gulf of Finland) in Pirita, Tallinn. The basin area of the Pirita is 799 km2.For the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, the estuary to the Gulf of Finland at Tallinn Bay hosted the sailing events.As part of the Tallinn water supply system, the Pirita is impounded into the Paunküla and Vaskjala Reservoirs. The reservoir in Vaskjala is connected over a canal to the Lake Ülemiste in Tallinn, where the Ülemiste Water Treatment Plant is situated. Additional water is directed to Pirita from the Jägala, Soodla and Pärnu rivers through a canal network that joins Pirita in Veskitaguse.

Pirita Convent (Estonian: Pirita klooster) was a monastery for both monks and nuns dedicated to St. Brigitta, located in the district of Pirita in Tallinn, Estonia. It functioned from 1407 to 1575. It was the largest convent in Livonia, and one of the largest in Northern Europe.

Tallinn Olympic Yachting Centre (Estonian: Tallinna Olümpiapurjespordikeskus, abbreviated TOP; also Pirita Yachting Centre) is a sport complex in Pirita, Tallinn, Estonia.The complex built in 1980 as sailing infrastructure for Moscow Summer Olympic Games.The complex was projected by architects Henno Sepmann, Peep Jänes, Ants Raid and Avo-Himm Looveer.Since 1997 the complex is under protection as the object of architectural heritage of Estonia.

Maarjamäe (Estonian for "Maria's Hill") is a subdistrict (Estonian: asum) in the district of Pirita, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It has a population of 2,307 (As of 1 January 2014).

Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1980 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 19 to 29 July 1980 of the coast of Tallinn (district of Pirita, in present-day Estonia), in that time an annexed part of the USSR at the Baltic Sea. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.

Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hearken" (Estonian: Tallinna Jumalaema Kiirestikuulja ikooni kirik; also Lasnamäe Church) is an orthodox church in Tallinn, Estonia.The church is dedicated to the "Quick to Hearken" icon of the Mother of God (Mary, mother of Jesus). Earlier, the icon was located in Pühtitsa Convent's Tallinn Assistant Church (Estonian: Pühtitsa kloostri Tallinna abikirik), but this church was closed in 1959.The church was opened and inaugurated on June 2013 by Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus'.

Loopealse (Estonian for "Alvar", literally "Above Alvar") is a subdistrict (Estonian: asum) in the district of Lasnamäe, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It has a population of 2,388 (As of 1 January 2014).

Charles Leroux Monument (Estonian: Charles Leroux' monument, also in Estonian: Julgetele ja teotahtelistele inimestele) is a sculpture in Maarjamäe, Tallinn, Estonia.The sculpture was made by Mati Karmin. The sculpture was opened in 1989.

Paevälja (Estonian for "Limestone Field") is a subdistrict (Estonian: asum) in the district of Lasnamäe, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. It has a population of 469 (As of 1 January 2014).

Maarjamäe Memorial (Estonian: Maarjamäe memoriaal) is a memorial in Tallinn, Estonia. The memorial is located on Pirita Road between the Lasnamäe Plateau and Tallinn Bay. The memorial is dedicated to those who had fallen when defending the Soviet Union during the World War II. Adjacent to the Maarjamae memorial complex is World War II German war cemetery.The memorial is designed by architect Allan Murdmaa and sculptor Matti Varik, some parts are designed by architect Mart Port and sculptor Lembit Tolli.The centre part of memorial is a 35-metre obelisk. The obelisk was erected in 1960. Besides the obelisk, the palm of the hand-prints and bronze seagulls named "Perishing seagulls" are also erected.
