Collin is a small village between Dumfries and Gretna in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is located on the Lochar Water, and the A75 road. It lies 5.3 km east of Dumfries, and 20 km north-west of Annan. It has a cemetery. Rockhall Tower, a castle once owned by the Grierson baronets, is in Collin.

Torthorwald is a village and civil parish in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. It is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) east of Dumfries on the A709 road to Lochmaben. The area was the property of the de Torthorwald family until the end of the 13th century, when the estate passed by marriage to the Kirkpatricks. In 1418, William de Carleil married the Kirkpatrick heiress. He may have been the builder of Torthorwald Castle, which was erected around this time, possibly on top of an earlier a motte. Torthorwald was erected as a burgh of barony in 1473. Torthorwald Castle was occupied until 1715; only two of its walls still stand, to a height of around 18 metres (59 ft).The pre-Reformation church at Torthorwald belonged to the Trinitarian Friars of Fail in Ayrshire. The present parish church was erected in 1782 on the site of this earlier foundation. Torthorwald is now within the united Parish of Kirkmichael, Tinwald and Torthorwald, which was created in 1981. The 19th-century missionary John Gibson Paton (1824–1907) grew up in Torthorwald. His evangelical work in the New Hebrides is commemorated in the church gate piers.Another building of interest is a 19th-century cruck-framed and thatched cottage. Restored in the 1990s, the cottage is protected as a category A listed building, and is maintained by a local heritage association. The village has a hotel, a village hall, and formerly had a primary school which closed in 2010. An annual Scarecrow Fun Day involves villagers erecting scarecrows in their front gardens.

Rockhall Tower, also known as Rockhall House or Rockhall Tower House, is a 16th-century tower house in Collin, Dumfries and Galloway. The castle originally belonged to Clan Kirkpatrick and later passed, through marriage, into Clan Grierson, becoming the home of the Grierson baronets. Sir Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet lived here until his death in 1733.

Isle Tower also known as Lochar Tower and Bankend Tower is a 16th-century ruined tower house located in the north of Bankend in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was a property of the Maxwell family.

Loaningfoot is a hamlet in the parish of Kirkbean in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is 10 miles ESE of the town of Dalbeattie.

Mouswald is a rural village slightly east of Dumfries in south-west Scotland. It lies on the B724 south of the A75. The site views southward over the Solway Firth.

Bankend is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is located near Lochar Water, the civil parish Caerlaverock and the villages of Blackshaw, Glencaple and Shearington. In 1961 it had a population of 79.

Dumfries and Galloway College is a further education college in Dumfries and Galloway, with campuses in Dumfries and Stranraer. Founded in 1961, the college has flourished to become a leading voice in green energy skills development to help tackle climate change and one of the main providers of learning and training across the South of Scotland. The college offers programmes ranging from senior-phase school partnerships to higher education, with a range of courses, including business, computing, care, childcare, construction, creative industries, education, engineering, hairdressing, beauty and complementary therapies, health and social studies, hospitality and sports and recreation. In 2008 their campus moved from Heathhall to its new main campus on the Crichton Estate, sitting nearby the University of Glasgow's and the University of the West of Scotland's satellite faculties in Dumfries. The college was recognised at the 2021 Green Gown Awards, winning the accolade of the UK and Ireland's Sustainability Institution of the Year award for 2020 and it regularly boasts of high student satisfaction rates - 97% among further education students and 94% among higher education students in the most recent 2018-19 Student Satisfaction and Engagement survey conducted by the Scottish Funding Council. This places Dumfries and Galloway College in the top 5 institutions in Scotland for student satisfaction.

The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum is a volunteer-operated aviation museum located in and around the World War II-era watch tower (control tower) at the former RAF Dumfries, located two miles north east of the centre of Dumfries, Scotland, which was in service from June 1940 until 1957, when it closed. The site was sold to a private company in 1960. The museum, founded in 1977 by the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Group, has a collection of aircraft, both civil and military, aero engines, artifacts, and a small, but "ever expanding collection of memorabilia honouring airborne forces."

Royal Air Force Dumfries or more simply RAF Dumfries was a former Royal Air Force station located near Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Scotland. The airfield opened on 17 June 1940 and was sold in 1960 to a private firm. The disused airfield is now used as the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum.

Lochar Thistle Football Club are a football club originating in 1969 from the villages of Locharbriggs and Heathhall in the town of Dumfries in Scotland. They originally competed in the Dumfries & District Amateur Football League where they were First Division Champions on three occasions. The club also went on a record 42 game unbeaten League run between 2010 and 2012. They joined the South of Scotland Football League for the 2013–14 season. They play their home games at Maxwelltown High School which accommodates approximately 1,000 spectators. The club was accredited in December 2015 with the Standard Level Quality Mark from the SFA. The club have won The Potts Cup in 2015–16 season and were also the first winners of the Alba Cup in the 2016–17 season. In 2009, 80 year old club stalwart, George Kirk was awarded Volunteer of the Year in Amateur football.

WWT Caerlaverock is wetland nature reserve in southwest Scotland, one of ten reserves in Britain operated by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust founded by Sir Peter Scott. It covers a 587 hectares (1,450 acres) site at Eastpark Farm, on the north shore of the Solway Firth to the south of Dumfries. It is a wild nature reserve with a network of screened approaches and several observation towers. There is a visitor centre and farmhouse accommodation. The site received 16,105 visitors in 2019.Caerlaverock is home to one of only two UK populations of the "living fossil" Triops cancriformis, the horseshoe shrimp. It is also home to the UK's most northerly population of the natterjack toad.Almost the entire Svalbard population of barnacle goose overwinters in the Solway Firth area, with many of the birds often at Caerlaverock for part or all of the winter; their protection by the reserve has enabled the population to recover from just 500 birds in the 1940s, to over 25,000 now. In 2016 the peak count on the reserve was 15,980 in October. Other high counts of wildfowl that year included 221 whooper swan, 2,457 Northern pintail, 3,000 Eurasian teal, 1,230 Eurasian wigeon and 150 greater scaup. These numbers attract raptors such as peregrine falcon, common buzzard and hen harrier. Vagrant birds recorded on the reserve include common crane, long-billed dowitcher, red-breasted goose, snow goose, ring-necked duck and white-tailed plover.In January 2002, a new education centre was officially opened by King Harald V of Norway.A pair of ospreys have nested on the reserve since 2005. Their nest can be observed by webcam through the reserve's web-site during the day in the nesting season (April–August). At other times the webcam shows the whooper pond or a barn owl nest.
