Gates is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The town is named after General Horatio Gates. The population was 28,400 at the 2010 census. Gates and North Gates are census-designated places located within the town's boundaries. It is a suburb of nearby Rochester, New York.

The CDP is in central Monroe County, in the eastern part of the town of Gates. It is bordered to the east by the city of Rochester and to the north by the North Gates CDP. Interstate 490 passes through the center of the Gates CDP and intersects Interstate 390 in the eastern part of the CDP. New York State Route 33 (Buffalo Road) forms the southern edge of the community, and State Route 31 (Lyell Avenue) forms part of the northern edge. Downtown Rochester is 6 miles (10 km) to the east. The hamlet of Gates Center occupies the southern half of the CDP (south of I-490), and Gates Chili High School is in the western part of the CDP.

Mohawk Airlines Flight 112 was a scheduled passenger flight from Rochester-Monroe Airport in Rochester, New York to Newark International Airport in Newark, New Jersey. On July 2, 1963, the aircraft operating the flight, a Martin 4-0-4 with a total of 15,970 operational hours, crashed during takeoff. The accident killed 7 people (2 crewmen and 5 passengers) and injured 36. Flight 112 attempted to take off on Rochester's runway 28 into a heavy thunderstorm. The co-pilot was unable to maintain control of the aircraft, and it fell to earth two minutes after takeoff. The plane struck the ground left wing-first. It then cartwheeled wing-over-wing and caught fire. The co-pilot was flying the plane from the left seat in violation of company policy. Both pilots working together were unable to control the plane, as the wind had shifted from a headwind to a tailwind. The Civil Aeronautics Board found the cause of the accident to be the pilot's decision to take off in bad weather, and cited the weather itself as a contributing factor.

Gates Chili High School is a secondary school in the Gates Chili Central School District in Gates, New York. It opened in September 1958. As of October 2023, the current principal is Thomas Hammel (interim).Gates Chili High School has a science wing, with an aquatics laboratory and botany study areas, an art and graphic arts wing for the study of classic art as well as technology applications for print and video, a 9,000-square-foot (840 m2) library, a career and counseling center and a field house with a 22,000-square-foot (2,000 m2) gymnasium, fitness center, swimming pool and an indoor track.

The Gates Chili Central School District is a public school district in Rochester, New York that serves approximately 4,000 students in most of the town of Gates and a large portion of the town of Chili in Monroe County, with over 850 employees and an operating budget of $100 million (approx. $25,628 per student).The Gates Chili school district opened in September 1956 as a consolidation of four Union free School districts (Thomas Edison, Warren Harding, Washington Irving and Florence Brasser), approved by voters of the four districts on December 8, 1955. The District celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. The average class size is 22 students (elementary), and 21 students (middle-high school). The student–teacher ratio is 13:1 (elementary), 13:1 (middle-high school). Christopher Dailey was selected by the Board of Education to serve as Superintendent of Schools beginning in July 2019. The former superintendent, Kimberle Ward, left the position in December 2018, with Carol Stehm serving as Interim Superintendent.

Inglewood and Thurston Historic District is a national historic district located at Rochester, Monroe County, New York. The district encompasses 141 contributing buildings (78 primary buildings) in a predominantly residential section of Rochester. The district developed between about 1920 and 1927, and includes buildings in a variety of architectural styles including Colonial Revival, Arts and Crafts, American Foursquare, and Tudor Revival. The dwellings reflect designs directed toward a middle-class clientele in a newly developing area of Rochester's Nineteenth Ward. Located in the district is the former Emmanuel Lutheran Church (now the Ebenezer Baptist Church) and the Rochester Presbyterian Home.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
