Derby–Shelton station (signed as Derby/Shelton) is a commuter rail station on the Waterbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad New Haven Line, serving the cities of Derby and Shelton, Connecticut. It is the southernmost stop on the Waterbury Branch before trains merge onto the Northeast Corridor.

The Naugatuck River is a 40.2-mile-long (64.7 km) river in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Its waters carve out the Naugatuck River Valley in the western reaches of the state, flowing generally due south and eventually emptying into the Housatonic River at Derby, Connecticut and thence 11 miles (18 km) to Long Island Sound. The Plume and Atwood Dam in Thomaston, completed in 1960 following the Great Flood of 1955, creates a reservoir on the river and is the last barrier to salmon and trout migrating up from the sea.

The John I. Howe House is a historic house at 213 Caroline Street in Derby, Connecticut. Built in 1845, it is a distinctive example of Greek Revival architecture executed in granite, built for John Ireland Howe of the Howe Pin Company. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Derby is a city in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, approximately 8 miles west-northwest of New Haven. It is located in southwest Connecticut at the confluence of the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers. It borders the cities of Ansonia to the north and Shelton to the southwest, and the towns of Orange to the south, Seymour to the northwest, and Woodbridge to the east. The population was 12,325 at the 2020 census. It is the smallest city in Connecticut by area, at 5.3 square miles.Derby was settled in 1642 as an Indian trading post under the name Paugasset. It was named after Derby, England, in 1675. It included what are now Ansonia, Seymour, Oxford, and parts of Beacon Falls. Derby is home to the first electric trolley system in New England, only the second in the United States. It is also home to the first electric locomotive in U.S. history to be built and successfully used commercially for hauling freight. The locomotive, built in 1888, is still kept in running condition by the Shore Line Trolley Museum.

The Birmingham Green Historic District is located in central Derby, Connecticut just north of the central business district. Also known as the Derby Green Historic District, the district consists of the Green and the buildings surrounding it on the east, north, and west sides. A total of 10 buildings, 3 of which are churches, and 4 monuments encompass the district. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 as a good example of privately organized 19th century urban planning.

The Sterling Opera House is located in Derby, Connecticut, at 112 Elizabeth Street, across from the Derby Green. The building is located within the Birmingham Green Historic District which comprises a total of 10 buildings, 3 of which are churches, and 4 monuments. The building was constructed in 1889 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 8, 1968, making it the first building in Connecticut to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Sterling Opera House served multiple municipal purposes as a city hall and police station as well as an opera house when it opened on April 2, 1889. It is named for Charles A. Sterling, founder the former Derby-based Sterling Piano Company Following the closing of the public entertainment portion of the building in 1945 the city continued to use the building as a city hall and police station until 1965.

The Kraus Corset Factory is a historic industrial property at 33 Roosevelt Drive in Derby, Connecticut, United States. The oldest portion of the large brick building, built in 1879, faces Third Street, while a c. 1910 addition extends along Roosevelt Drive. It is the only major building to survive from Derby's period of corset manufacturing. It was built by Sidney Downs, one of Derby's leading businessmen of the period. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 12, 1987. It has been converted into apartments.

Harcourt Wood Memorial Library (also known as the Derby Public Library) is a historic public library at 313 Elizabeth Street in Derby, Connecticut. Built in 1902, it is a fine local example of Colonial Revival architecture, funded by the local streetcar railway owner. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The General David Humphreys House is a historic house museum at 37 Elm Street in Ansonia, Connecticut. Built in the 1690s, it was the birthplace of the American Revolutionary War Colonel David Humphreys. It is now owned by the Derby Historical Society, and serves as its headquarters. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Plumb Memorial Library is a public library in Shelton, Connecticut. It is located at 65 Wooster St., in an architecturally distinguished Richardsonian Romanesque building designed by Bridgeport architect Charles T. Beardsley, Jr. and built in 1895. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The building is named in memory of David Wells Plumb, a local businessman and philanthropist, whose widow donated land for its construction. A modern addition was added in 1975, significantly enlarging the library's space and look.

Griffin Hospital is a 160-bed community hospital founded in 1909 and located in Derby, Connecticut. The hospital serves more than 130,000 residents in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. Griffin Hospital is Derby's top employer and one of New Haven County's largest employers. Griffin Hospital serves as a flagship hospital for Planetree, an international healthcare organization that centers on patient care. It is a clinical campus of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and provides clinical clerkship education for the medical school's osteopathic medical students.

The Commodore Hull School, now also known as the Commodore Hull School Apartments, is a former elementary school at 130 Oak Avenue in Shelton, Connecticut. It was built in 1907, and is believed to be the first school in the state built using the fireproof combination of terra cotta blocks and reinforced concrete. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
