The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C.
The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C. is a Baptist church at 1328 16th Street NW, nine blocks north of the White House. It is affiliated with the District of Columbia Baptist Convention. The church is also considered the parent organization to the First Colored Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. which was later renamed Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. It was originally organized in 1801. The church has occupied five buildings on four sites, including one building on the site of what is now Ford's Theater. The congregation moved to its current location in 1890, with the first services held in the present sanctuary building on Christmas Day 1955. Famous attendees through history include former presidents Harry S. Truman and Jimmy Carter.
