Dunsyre (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Saghair) is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 10 kilometres (6 mi) from Carnwath. Dunsyre is associated with an ancient barony and parish church. The name of Dunsyre is of Celtic origin and is supposed to signify the "Hill of the Seer." It is located by the burn known as the South Medwin Water. From 1867 until 1945 Dunsyre was served by a railway branch from Carstairs to Dolphinton, originally built by the Caledonian Railway, and the disused embankment of this runs along the south side of the village close to the church.The surface is generally elevated, and rises further still into the surrounding hills. Dunsyre Hill overlooks the area from the north and Blackmount from the south. Dunsyre Hill forms the termination of the Pentland Hills, a range extending for nearly 32 km (20 mi) from the immediate vicinity of Edinburgh. This hill has an elevation of 150 metres (500 ft) above the general surface of the lands, and of 401 metres (1,315 ft) above sea level; a small range of gradually diminishing hills branches off towards the west from it, stretching to the parish of Carnwath. Between the Dunsyre and Walston ranges is a level valley about 5 km (3 mi) in length and 1.6 km (1 mi) wide. The small river of the South Medwin runs along the valley, eventually joining the river Clyde. The ornamental garden Little Sparta lies immediately to the west of the village.

Elsrickle is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It lies on Blackmount Hill, which is at the end of the Pentland Hills. An elrick is an old place name associated with hunting and is derived from the Gaelic eileirg. In this, large animals in the high ground are chased by dogs to locations where the ground slopes more steeply so that the animals are likely to fall, at which point they can be killed off by waiting hunters. This is an ancient technique also used by Native Americans. Examination of the topography of Elsrickle does not contradict this hypothesis.

North Medwyn is a river in the Lanarkshire region of Scotland. Along with the confluence of the South Medwyn River it forms the Medwyn water basin. The North Medwyn is a tributary of the River Clyde.

Newbigging (Scots: Neebicken) is a hamlet in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is near Dunsyre at the southern end of the Pentland Hills. It is on the A72 Carnwath to Peebles road.

Tarbrax (Scottish Gaelic: "An Tòrr Breac" - meaning "the speckled tor") is a small village in the Parish of Carnwath, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is at the end of a dead end road off the A70 road between Edinburgh and Carnwath. Tarbrax has a population of about 200 and is 290 metres (1,000 ft) above sea level, sitting on the edge of the Pentland Hills. Nearby villages include Auchengray and Woolfords.

Brownsbank (Brounsbank in Scots) is a cottage close to the small settlement of Candymill to the north of Biggar in Scotland. It is best known as the former home of the poet Hugh MacDiarmid. His old house is maintained by Biggar Museum Trust and is occupied by a writer in residence. Recent holders of the Brownsbank Creative Writing Fellowship have been James Robertson, Matthew Fitt, Gerry Cambridge, Aonghas MacNeacail, Tom Bryan, Richie McCaffery, and Linda Cracknell. The current (2012) resident is Andrew Sclater. Originally the main criterion was that the writer was a Lowland Scots language poet, like MacDiarmid. The cottage was visited during MacDiarmid's lifetime by many well-known poets including Norman MacCaig, Sorley MacLean, Allen Ginsberg, Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Seamus Heaney.

Dolphinton is a village and parish in Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Biggar, 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Carstairs, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Leadburn and 27 miles (43 km) southwest of Edinburgh, on the A702 road. The local manor belonged in the 12th century to Dolfin, elder brother of the first Earl of Dunbar. The estate was owned in various forms by the Brown family from the sixteenth till the nineteenth centuries, when it passed to the McKenzie family by marriage. The parish has an area of 3,581 acres (1,449 ha). It is bordered by the parishes of Linton and Kirkurd (Peeblesshire), Walston and Dunsyre.
