The station opened with the N Judah line on October 21, 1928. In March 2014, Muni released details of the proposed implementation of their Transit Effectiveness Project (later rebranded MuniForward), which included a variety of stop changes for the N Judah line. Under that plan - which will be implemented as the N Judah Rapid Project - the stop at Funston Avenue would be closed because it is just one block away from the stop at 12th Avenue.

The Little Shamrock is a historic bar in the Inner Sunset district in San Francisco, California. Established in 1893, it is considered the city's second-oldest bar after The Saloon in North Beach, which opened in 1861.The saloon was founded at its current location on H Street (today's 807 Lincoln Way at the intersection with 9th Avenue) by Irish entrepreneur Julia Herzo Quigley and her first husband Antone Herzo to serve visitors and builders during the construction of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 in Golden Gate Park. Grandview Park, also referred to as Turtle Hill by local residents, is a small, elevated park in the Sunset District, San Francisco, California. It is surrounded by 14th and 15th Avenues, as well as Noriega Street. Despite its small size, 3.98 acres (1.61 ha) or about the size of a city block, the park is important geologically and botanically and offers views of downtown San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, to the Pacific Ocean, the Marin headlands, and across to the Sutro Tower. The summit of Grandview Park rises to about 666 feet (203 m). It is an outcrop of chert, which is part of the heterogeneous assemblage known as the Franciscan Formation, or Franciscan Assemblage, the primary geologic feature on which the city of San Francisco is founded, here covered with a thin layer of sand. It provides one of the last remaining habitats within the city for a number of native plants, including the endangered Franciscan wallflower and dune tansy, and also bush lupin, beach strawberry, bush monkey flower, and coyote bush. The hill is crowned with Monterey cypress trees. Because of the fragility of the environment, visitors to the park are asked to keep to paths.

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, colloquially known as the Moraga Steps, is a stairway in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood in San Francisco, California. Fodor's calls it "possibly the world's largest mosaic staircase", and it leads up to Grandview Park. The flight contains 163 steps stretching 90 feet (27 m) high. These steps are also covered in over 2,000 unique tiles from over 75,000 glass fragments.

Under that plan - which will be implemented as the N Judah Rapid Project - the stop will have its short boarding islands extended to accommodate longer trains.
