Hakone Shrine

The Hakone Barrier (箱根関, Hakone Seki) was a security checkpoint which was established by the Tokugawa Shogunate on the Tōkaidō highway connecting the capital of Edo with Kyoto in Edo period Japan. In 1923, the site was recognized as a National Historic Site.

Hakone (箱根町, Hakone-machi) is a town in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 October 2023, the town had a population of 10,965, and total area of 92.82 km2 (35.84 sq mi). Hakone is a notable spa town and a popular tourist destination due to its many hot springs being within view of nearby Mount Fuji, the most visited mountain in Japan.

The Moto-Hakone Stone Buddhas (元箱根石仏群, Moto-Hakone sekibutsu) is a grouping of stone sculptures and associated tō (stone pagodas), dating from the late Kamakura period and located in the former village of Moto-Hakone, now merged into the town of Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The group has been designated an National Historic Site and includes a number of Important Cultural Properties.

Komagata Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Japan. It is the ichinomiya of Rikuchū Province. Komagata Shrine is called "Komagata-san" by locals and is a significant religious place in the Hakone region.

The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway (箱根駒ヶ岳ロープウェー, Hakone Komagatake Rōpuwē), officially the Komagatake Ropeway Line (駒ヶ岳索道線, Komagatake Sakudō-sen), is a Japanese aerial lift line in Hakone, Kanagawa, operated by Izu Hakone Railway. The line, opened in 1963, climbs Mount Koma (駒ヶ岳) from the Lake Ashi lakeside. From 1957 to 2005, Izu Hakone Railway also operated Hakone Komagatake Funicular (駒ヶ岳鋼索線) which climbed Komagatake from east side.

Mount Koma or Hakone Komagatake (Japanese: 箱根駒ヶ岳), with the altitude of 1,356 meters, is one of the peaks of the central cone of Mount Hakone, located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its summit, a grass field that offers a great view of its surroundings, is visited by many hikers, using the 1,800-meter-long Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone Garden on Lake Ashi. Also at the summit is the Hakone Motomiya, founded in 1964, the rear shrine of the Hakone Shrine.

Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashi-no-ko), also referred to as Hakone Lake or Ashinoko Lake, is a scenic lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, Japan. It is a crater lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano that last erupted in 1170 CE at Ōwakudani. The lake is known for its views of Mount Fuji, its numerous hot springs, historical sites, and ryokan. The lake is located on the Tōkaidō road, the main link between Kyoto and Tokyo. A number of pleasure boats and ferries traverse the lake, providing scenic views for tourists and passengers. Several of the boats are inspired by the design of sailing warships. Most visitors to Lake Ashi stay in one of the hotels or ryokan located in the area to visit some of the local attractions. There is also a campsite at the north end of the lake. Hakone Shrine is a shrine that has been visited by shōgun, samurai, and many travelers over the centuries. Large sections of the Old Tōkaidō road are preserved here. Onshi Park, the summer retreat established in 1886 for the imperial family, is now a public park. Taking the aerial tram Hakone Ropeway to The Great Boiling Valley. From Togendai on Lake Ashi, the Hakone Ropeway aerial tram connects to Sounzan, the upper terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car funicular railway. This in turn connects to the Hakone Tozan Line mountain railway for the descent to Odawara and a connection to Tokyo by the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. Visitors can also take the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise with its pirate ships from Togendai to Moto-Hakone Port and Hakone-Machi Port on opposite ends of the lake. The cruise line began in 1950. The name means "lake of reeds" in Japanese: 芦 (ashi) is "reed", and 湖 (ko) is "lake". The abundance of nature makes it popular with hikers. There are many trails with different levels of challenge. Lake Ashi is emptied by the Fukara Aqueduct toward Susono, Shizuoka since its completion in 1670, not by the Haya River toward Odawara, Kanagawa.

Mount Futago (Japanese: 二子山 = Futago-Yama) is a twin-peak mountain in the central volcanic cones of Mount Hakone, located in Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan. It consists of Upper Futago Mountain (1,099 meters) in the north, and Lower Futago Mountain (1,065 meters) in the south. Although entering this mountain is prohibited in order to preserve nature, Mount Futago is easily recognizable from various directions because of its prominent twin peaks and the relay towers of NTT Telecommunications East and NTT Docomo, which play an important role in Japan's busy east-west telecommunications.

The Hakone Pass (Japanese: 箱根峠), is a mountain pass located between Hakone, Kanagawa, and Kannami, Shizuoka, Japan. It is in the Hakone Mountains and its elevation, 846 meters above sea level.

Ashinoko Skyline (Japanese: 芦ノ湖スカイライン) or Lake Ashi Skyline, is a 10.75 km toll road in Kanagawa, Japan, connecting National Route 1 near Hakone Pass, with Kojiri on the northern shores of Lake Ashi. The entire length of Ashinoko Skyline opened in 1972, and goes over the scenic route of the outer volcanic ridge of Mount Hakone, with the views of Mount Fuji in the west, and Lake Ashi in the east. It is one of the first of the 50 or so scenic "Skyline" roads that followed in Japan, named after Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park over the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, U.S.

Mount Hakone (箱根山, Hakoneyama), with its highest peak Mount Kami (1,438 meters), is a complex volcano in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan that is truncated by two overlapping calderas, the largest of which is 10 × 11 km wide. The calderas were formed as a result of two major explosive eruptions about 180,000 and 49,000–60,000 years ago. Lake Ashi lies between the southwestern caldera wall and a half dozen post-caldera lava domes that arose along a southwest–northeastern trend cutting through the center of the calderas. Dome growth occurred progressively to the south, and the largest and youngest of them, Mount Kami, forms the high point of Hakone. The calderas are breached to the east by the Haya River canyon. Mount Ashigara is a parasitic cone. The latest magmatic eruptive activity at Hakone occurred 2,900 years ago. It produced a pyroclastic flow and a lava dome in the explosion crater, although phreatic eruptions took place as recently as the 12–13th centuries AD. According to the nearby Hakone Shrine, the Komagatake peak has been the object of religious veneration since ancient times.

Ashigarashimo District (足柄下郡, Ashigarashimo-gun) is a district of Japan located in western Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Most sparsely populated mountainous districts are part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The majority area of the city of Odawara was formerly part of Ashigarashimo District. As of 2009, the district had an estimated population of 48,713 and a density of 346 persons per km2. The total area was 140.73 km2.
