Franklin Island Light

Franklin Island National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge on Franklin Island outside Muscongus Bay in the state of Maine, United States. It is one of the five refuges that together make up the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, along with Petit Manan, Cross Island, Seal Island, and Pond Island. Franklin Island NWR has a surface area of 12 acres (4.9 ha). It is one of the smallest refuges in the United States National Wildlife Refuge system. It is part of the Town of Friendship. The U.S. Government acquired Franklin Island in 1806 and completed construction of the Franklin Island Light in 1808. This was the third lighthouse built in Maine. The U.S. Lighthouse Service and its successor, the U.S. Coast Guard, continued to staff the lighthouse for 160 years before the station was automated in 1967. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acquired Franklin Island in 1973, making this the first island acquired for the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge Complex. Franklin Island once supported one of the largest common eider colonies in Maine. The eider colony was decimated by avian cholera in the mid-1980s. The population has slowly recovered, and a 2003 survey documented over 330 pairs of eiders and over 100 pairs of great black-backed and herring gulls. Franklin Island is closed to public use during the seabird nesting season: April–August. It is open during daylight hours the rest of the year.

Muscongus Bay is a bay on the coast of Maine, United States, between Penobscot Bay and John's Bay. Muscongus was the name of an Abenaki village meaning "fishing place" or "many [or large] rock ledges." John Smith recorded the river in 1616 as Nusconcus and was also spelled Nuscongus. The two main tributaries are the Saint George River at its eastern end and the Medomak River, which flows into the bay at Waldoboro. Historically, the Medomak River and Muscongus Bay were the dividing line between the Waldo Patent and Pemaquid Patent and Waldoboro was a customs point of entry. Muscongus Bay has many islands including Hog which is home to a National Audubon Society camp, Allen, Eastern Egg Rock, Franklin (home of Franklin Island National Wildlife Refuge), and Louds Island historically referred to as Muscongus Island prior purchase from Thomas Drowne by William Loud. Monhegan Island is offshore from Muscongus Bay. The Maine Island Trail passes through Muscongus Bay. The bay is bounded by Marshall Point Light, Pemaquid Point Light, and contains Franklin Island Light. Towns bordering Muscongus bay are Bristol, Bremen, Waldoboro, Friendship, Cushing, and St. George. The type of sailboat called the Muscongus Bay sloop is also known as the Friendship Sloop. The hull of the five-masted schooner Cora F. Cressey lies in Muscongus Bay.

Allen Island or Allen's Island is a 450-acre (180 ha) private island which is part of St. George, Knox County, Maine, United States. it is located near the southeastern end of Muscongus Bay, roughly midway between the southernmost parts of the St. George's mainland, and Monhegan Island.

Louds Island, also once known as Muscongus Island, is an island in Muscongus Bay off the coast of Round Pond, a village of Bristol, Maine, United States. It is also an unorganized territory of Maine. It is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide at its widest point. The island did not have a flush toilet until 2009. The 2020 Census lists Louds Island with a population of 3. It is part of the unorganized territory of Lincoln County.

The Loudville Church is a historic non-denominational church building on Louds Island, an unincorporated territory of Lincoln County, Maine that is now home to summer residences. The church was built in 1913, using materials from a schoolhouse built in 1908 on Malaga Island. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

The Meduncook River is a 7-mile-long (11 km) river in Knox County, Maine. From its source (44°01′04″N 69°17′03″W) in Friendship, the river runs about 1 mile south to the head of its estuary, then about 6 miles southwest to Muscongus Bay. The estuary forms part of the border between Friendship and Cushing.

Hog Island is an island spanning 330 acres (130 ha) located in Muscongus Bay in Bremen, Maine, United States at the end of Keene Neck Road. It is a part of the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary, which includes an additional 30 acres (12 ha) on the mainland across from the island, as well as the current home to the Audubon Camp in Maine operated by the Seabird Restoration Program (Project Puffin) of the National Audubon Society.

Friendship (formerly known as Meduncook) is a town in Knox County, Maine, United States. It is 31 miles (49.9 km) southeast of Augusta. The population was 1,142 at the 2020 census.

The Cora F. Cressey was a five masted 273 feet (83 m) wooden-hulled freight schooner operating in the coasting trade along the east coast of the United States. Built in 1902, it served in that trade until 1928. After serving for a time as a floating nightclub, its hulk was towed to the Keene Narrows in Bremen, Maine, where it was scuttled to serve as a breakwater for a lobster operation. Despite its deteriorating condition, the hulk is one of the largest surviving wooden hulls in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Union Church, also known locally as the Little Brown Church, is a historic church on Maine State Route 32 in Round Pond, a village of Bristol, Maine. Built in 1853, it is a distinctive local example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, and one of the few of this type of church in the entire state. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Saint George River is a river in Maine with a watershed of 225 square miles (580 km2) in a unique and historic area of mountains, sea coast, lakes, tidal streams and inlets. The origin of the Saint George River is the outflow of Saint George Lake (44°23′42″N 69°18′41″W) in Liberty. The river follows a winding course 45 miles (72 km) south to Thomaston, where the river flows into the estuary and runs about 12 miles (19 km) southwest to Muscongus Bay, forming the border between Cushing and St. George.

Chamberlain is an unincorporated village in the town of Bristol, Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The community is located along Maine State Route 32, 12.1 miles (19.5 km) southeast of Wiscasset. Chamberlain has a post office, with ZIP code 04541, which opened on September 30, 1905.
