Pocklington Rural District

Nunburnholme railway station was a railway station on the York to Beverley Line in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It opened in 1848 as Burnby, and was renamed 1873. It closed in 1951.

Burnby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Hayton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) south-east of the market town of Pocklington and 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of the market town of Market Weighton. It lies 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east of the A1079 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 103. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Hayton. The church dedicated to St Giles was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967, and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Burnby was served by Nunburnholme railway station on the York to Beverley Line between 1847 and 1951.

Kilnwick Percy is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Nunburnholme, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of Pocklington town centre, and to the north of the B1246 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 69. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Nunburnholme.Kilnwick Percy Hall is a Grade II* listed country house built around 1845. It is now a Buddhist meditation and retreat centre. The grounds of the hall include a lake and a small church in the Norman style dedicated to Saint Helen. The church is designated a Grade II listed building and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.In 1823 Kilnwick Percy was a civil parish in the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. The ecclesiastical parish was under the patronage of the Dean of York. Population at the time was 43.

Nunburnholme is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is approximately 3 miles (5 km) east of the market town of Pocklington. The civil parish is formed by the village of Nunburnholme and the hamlet of Kilnwick Percy. According to the 2011 UK census, Nunburnholme parish had a population of 234, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 253.Nunburnholme derives its name from the Old English Burnholme (“burn” = spring, stream; “holm” = island in a river, and was variously spelt Brunnum, Brunham and Brunne in medieval times. The prefix “Nun-“ was added some time before the 16th century with reference to Nunburnholme Priory.Nunburnholme was laid waste during the Harrying of the North in 1069–70 and was still deserted in 1086. The entry for the manor of Brunham in the Domesday Book reads: "Terra Tainorum Regis. East Riding. Hessle Hundred. Manerium. In Brunham, Morcar, Turvet and Turchil had 11 carucates of taxable land. There is land for six ploughs. One carucate is soke in Pocklington. Forne holds it of the King, and it is waste."The parish church of St James is a Grade I listed building, noted for its former incumbents the Reverend Francis Orpen Morris, author of works on natural history, and his son, the Rev. Marmaduke Charles Frederick Morris, antiquarian and author.During restoration in 1872–7 two sections of an important late Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft were discovered walled up in the church. The Nunburnholme Cross now stands within the church, its two sections incorrectly mounted back to front. The highly ornamented faces of the cross-shaft comprise Anglo-Saxon Christian figures, an unusual haloed warrior in profile, and later pagan Viking and Norman additions.The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, a long-distance footpath, passes through the village, as does the 60-mile (97 km) Wilberforce Way, which runs from Kingston upon Hull to York.In 1823 Nunburnholme was a civil parish in the Wapentake of Harthill. Baines stated that there was previously a small Benedictine nunnery, indicated by a mound, that was founded by the ancestors of Roger de Morley. Population at the time was 203, with occupations including ten farmers and yeomen, a shoemaker and shopkeeper, a schoolmaster, and a wheelwright.Nunburnholme was served by Nunburnholme railway station on the York to Beverley Line between 1847 and 1951.

It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) south of the market town of Pocklington and 4.5 miles (7 km) north-west of the market town of Market Weighton. It lies on the A1079 road. The parish includes Burnby together with the hamlet of Thorpe le Street. The parish covers an area of 1,729.333 hectares (4,273.27 acres), According to the 2011 UK census and the parish had a population of 360, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 317. Although the civil parish is called "Hayton" its parish council is called "Hayton and Burnby Parish Council". On 1 April 1935 Burnby and Thorpe le Street parish was abolished and merged with Hayton. The church dedicated to St Martin was designated a Grade I listed building in 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. In 1823 Hayton was a village and a civil parish in the Wapentake of Harthill. The ecclesiastical parish was Hayton-cum-Beilby, with the parish incumbent living under the patronage of the Dean of York. Population at the time was 177. Occupations included twelve farmers, a blacksmith, a wheelwright, a corn miller, a shoemaker, and the landlord of The White Horse public house.

Warter Priory is an 11,000 acres (4,500 ha) country estate in the East Riding of Yorkshire Yorkshire Wolds, centred 1 mile (2 km) south-west of the village of Warter and 3 miles (5 km) east of Pocklington. The estate had a country house from the 17th century until its demolition in 1972.

Nunburnholme Priory was a priory of Benedictine nuns in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was founded during the reign of Henry II of England by an ancestor of Robert de Merlay, lord of Morpeth. Except for its demesne, it possessed only little property in its surroundings. In 1313 the prioress claimed the monastery of Seton in Coupland as a cell of Nunburnholme. In 1521 only five nuns and the prioress lived here, and on 11 August 1536 the house was suppressed. It was valued as the poorest and smallest of the Benedictine nunneries in Yorkshire surviving until then.The priory was northeast of the village of Nunburnholme, between Nun's Walk and Back Lane. The site of the priory is a Scheduled Monument, described as featuring "extensive earthworks ... across the whole of the site" and "a group of well preserved but now dry fishponds".

Woldgate School (formerly College) is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form on Kilnwick Road in Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It educates approximately 1,169 pupils aged 11 to 18. Until 2017, the school was Local Authority funded, but became an academy in January 2017 and is now part of a Multi-Learning Partnership. It was rated 'good in its last Ofsted inspection.Woldgate School was built in the 1950s and educates pupils from Pocklington and its surrounding villages, which forms a large, mainly rural catchment area. The school was awarded specialist status and received a grant for developing performing arts. A new music block was built, which included a recording studio, practice rooms and a dance studio.The school teaching is under the National Curriculum, and includes a Sixth Form. Facilities include a dedicated Sixth Form study room and more than 800 computers, with a library and an Independent Learning Centre used for homework assistance and computer access. Other facilities are a gymnasium, a multi-use hall, fitness suite, tennis/netball courts, and a playing field used for football, rugby and athletics.

Millington is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north-east of Pocklington. The civil parish is formed by the village of Millington and the hamlets of Great Givendale and Ousethorpe. According to the 2011 UK census, Millington parish had a population of 242, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 217. Nearby is Millington Woods and Millington Pastures. Millington Woods is one of the few remaining wooded dales in the Yorkshire Wolds. The woods includes Millington Springs, which formerly supported beds of watercress. Millington Pastures holds a stock of highland cattle, and is used for bike riding and walking. The church dedicated to St Margaret was designated a Grade I listed building in 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Millington has a public house called The Gait Inn and also a licensed restaurant and tea room called The Ramblers Rest. The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, a long distance footpath passes through the parish, to the east of the village. In 1823 Millington was a village and civil parish in the Wapentake of Harthill and the Liberty of St Peter's. The ecclesiastical parish living was under the patronage of the Dean of York. Population at the time was 282. Occupations included three farmers, a blacksmith, a wheelwright, a corn miller, a shopkeeper, and the landlord of The Gate public house. Resident were a school master, the parish vicar, and a gentleman.

The Pocklington Iron Age burial ground is a prehistoric cemetery discovered in 2014 on the outskirts of Pocklington in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Excavations carried out on an ongoing basis since then, have uncovered more than 160 skeletons and more than 70 square barrows thought to date to the Middle Iron Age that are attributed to the Arras culture, an ancient British culture of East Yorkshire. A variety of grave goods have been found along with the human remains, including weapons, beads, pots, and a rare chariot burial.

Thorpe le Street is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Hayton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-east of the market town of Pocklington and 3 miles (4.8 km) north-west of the market town of Market Weighton. It lies to the south of the A1079 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 28. Thorpe le Street was formerly a township in the parish of Nun-Burn-holme, in 1866 Thorpe le Street became a civil parish on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Hayton. The Roman Road known as Cade's Road is thought likely to have passed through it, which would explain "-le-Street".

Londesborough Park railway station was a short-lived private station on the York to Beverley Line at Londesborough in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was created as a private station for George Hudson of Londesborough Hall. It closed in January 1867.
