Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey is a Buddhist monastery and retreat centre located in Northumberland, in northern England. The monastic order is equally for men and women. It follows the Serene Reflection Meditation Tradition, similar to the Sōtō Zen sect in Japan. It is part of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives. Throssel Hole was established in 1972. It offers retreats, festivals and other events for anyone who wishes to learn about or deepen their practice of meditation.

Allendale Moors is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Northumberland, England. The upland moorland ridge site is listed for its heath, flush and upland grassland which provide a habitat for a nationally important assemblage of moorland breeding birds.

West Allen is a civil parish in Northumberland, England. The parish covers the valley of the River West Allen. The main settlements in the parish are Carrshield and Ninebanks. At the 2021 census, the parish had a population of 280.

Nenthead ( NENT-hed) in the county of Cumbria is one of England's highest villages, at around 1,437 feet (438 m). It was not built until the middle of the 18th century and was one of the earliest purpose-built industrial villages in Britain.

Rampgill mine is a disused lead mine at Nenthead, Alston Moor, Cumbria, England UK Grid Reference: NY78184351 It was one of the most extensive and productive mines in Nenthead. It can be accessed via the portal of the horse level close to the Heritage Centre car park. The mine was completely closed for many decades due to collapses in the horse level, but in 2006 some work was done and it became possible to access the Bounder End Cross Vein (also known as the Boundary Cross Vein). In 2013 the Canadian mining company Minco (www.mincoplc.com) sunk boreholes to discover the extent of zinc deposits beneath Nenthead. Test drilling could go on for several years, but the company believes that the village may be sited on huge deposits. The zinc is 150 metres below the surface, which is too deep to reach by old mining techniques. The workings of the original lead mine were mainly in the so-called Great Limestone, which was laid down in the Namurian and is generally 10 to 20 metres thick. The lead sulphide mineral galena PbS was mined as an ore of lead, and the sulphides pyrite FeS2 and sphalerite ZnS were also present. Many carbonates occur there, including ankerite Ca(Fe,Mg)(CO3)2, barytocalcite BaCa(CO3)2, calcite CaCO3, siderite FeCO3, smithsonite ZnCO3 and witherite BaCO3, as well as the non-carbonate minerals fluorite CaF2 and baryte BaSO4.

Ninebanks is a small village in south west Northumberland, England in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Alston by road. It is noted for the early sixteenth century Ninebanks Tower, sometimes described as a pele tower, but possibly built as a watchtower. It is made of sandstone and has four floors, the lowest of which is now below the level of the road. There is an independently run Ninebanks Youth Hostel, which is actually in nearby Mohope.

Ouston is a small settlement in south west Northumberland, England in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Alston by road, and just west of Ninebanks.

Acton is a small hamlet in Northumberland, north-east England, about 3 miles (5 km) south of Allendale Town. Acton is usually Anglo-Saxon Old English for "farmstead at the oak tree(s)"; here, though, it is "Acca's farmstead". Acca is an Anglo-Saxon settler's forename. Acton is in the parliamentary constituency of Hexham.

Sinderhope is a hamlet situated on the east Allen Valley in south-west Northumberland. It is in the civil parish of Allendale. The population is spread over farms in an area approximately 25 square miles (65 km2). The population is around 80. The mainstay of employment is sheep-farming. Wildlife is plentiful with many examples of rare birds of Great Britain, such as the black grouse, Eurasian whimbrel and Eurasian curlew. The local beauty spot is a ford with wild flowers and a wood called Oldman Bottom, often mistakenly called "Old Man's Bottom". The whole area is part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The community centre was once a school for the area, but now serves as a venue for various local activities

Allendale, often marked on maps as Allendale Town, is a village and civil parish in south west Northumberland, England. It is located within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 2,120, decreasing to 2,021 at the 2011 Census. Allendale is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); the second largest of the 40 AONB's in England and Wales. The local economy is predominantly based on agriculture (notably sheep farming) and tourism, although of late it has become a popular commuter town for Newcastle upon Tyne. Allendale is located around 11 miles (18 km) by road from the town of Hexham, and around 34 miles (55 km) from both Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Museum of Classic Sci-Fi is in Allendale, Northumberland in England. The museum opened in 2018 and houses a collection of more than 200 props, costumes and artworks from a number of "classic", mid to late-20th century science fiction franchises. The Guardian has described the establishment as "one of Britain’s most eccentric small museums".

Ashgill Force is a waterfall near Alston, Cumbria, England. The fall is located on Ashgill Beck and is reasonably easily accessible from the B6277 (which crosses a bridge over the beck just above the falls) or from Garrigill village, downstream of the fall. The beck downstream of the main fall is attractive in its own right and features several small cascades. It is a home to several wildlife species, including a much loved staple of British streams - dippers. There are ruins of former industrial buildings nearby, possibly from lead working, which the area was once famous for. While less popular than nearby High Force, Hardraw Force and Cauldron Snout, Ashgill Force is nonetheless an impressive fall, plunging 55 feet over a rocky shelf. A visit to this fall will likely be more tranquil than one to its aforementioned more famous neighbours, as it attracts less tourists to obscure the view. The fall is comparable to the higher Hardraw Force. Arguably Ashgill Force has a greater volume of water tumbling over it. The shelf behind the fall is also much more easily accessible than at Hardraw. Indeed, access behind Hardraw Force is now officially prohibited. Given the forces present on an overhanging cliff with a waterfall, it is perhaps inadvisable to traverse the rear of any unfamiliar fall. Certainly, anyone who does makes that move at their own risk.
