Lessius Hogeschool

The sack of Antwerp, often known as the Spanish Fury at Antwerp, was an episode of the Eighty Years' War. It is the greatest massacre in the history of the Low Countries. On 4 November 1576, mutinying Spanish tercios of the Army of Flanders began the sack of Antwerp, leading to three days of horror among the population of the city, which was the cultural, economic and financial center of the Low Countries. The savagery of the sack led the provinces of the Low Countries to unite against the Spanish crown. The devastation also caused Antwerp's decline as the leading city in the region and paved the way for Amsterdam's rise.

The Botanic Garden of Antwerp, which also carries the name Den Botaniek (also sometimes locally called Den Botanieken Hof or Kruidtuin), is a landscaped botanical garden created in 1825 in the inner city of Antwerp located at the Leopoldstraat, covering an area of slightly less than 1 hectare. Before that the park was, at the end of the 18th century, a plant garden for the Ecole Centrale and then the herb garden and later the vegetable garden of the Sint-Elisabethgasthuis in Antwerp. The Garden in its present form was laid out by dokter Claude-Louis Sommé and supported the lessons in external pathology at the école de médecine, an education in medicine. The gardeners home in the park dates back to 1870 and the entrance gate, designed by Pierre Bruno Bourla to 1826. Burla also designed the Orangerie of the garden which is however no longer situated within the current area of the garden. The Orangerie contains busts of Linnaeus and de Jussieu and the names of De L'Escluse, De L'Obel, Van Sterbeeck, Dodoens and Dumortier on the facade. The garden is managed by the City Council of Antwerp since 1926.Since January 1950 the herb garden is a protected landscape. The garden holds a collection of 2.000 plants, with in the Conservatory some cacti and other exotic plants. The garden is open daily, the Conservatory remains closed on Sundays. Entrance is free.

The Bust of Cornelis II Landschot is a marble portrait by Flemish sculptor Sebastiaen van den Eynde. It was executed around 1656. The subject of the sculpture is Cornelis II Landschot, a wealthy Flemish businessman and philanthropist. The sculpture, now in the Maagdenhuis Museum, used to stand above the entrance to the chapel of Falconrui, founded by Landschot.

The Maagdenhuis Museum (Maidens' House Museum) is an art museum and historical museum located in a 17th-century historic building on Lange Gasthuisstraat, Antwerp, Belgium. The building was used as an orphanage for the maegdeckens, or maidens, from the mid-16th century to the end of the 19th century. The museum presents a collection of utensils used on a daily basis by the foundlings and the orphans; a collection of antique furniture, and a series of documents relating to the orphanage and the life in it from the 16th century to 19th century.Although one of the smallest museums in Antwerp, the Maagdenhuis houses a valuable and rich collection of paintings and sculptures. The collection includes works by artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, Sir Anthony van Dyck, Pieter Aertsen, Otto van Veen, Simon De Vos, Maarten Pepijn, Huibrecht van den Eynde, and Walter Pompe.

The Eeuwfeestkliniek (English: Centenary Clinic) is a surgical hospital in Antwerp, Belgium. Built in 1930, it was constructed on the centenary of Belgium for the city of Antwerp. After World War II, it came under the control of the Augustinian nuns and in the 1980s became part of the Monica healthcare umbrella. It was extensively renovated in the 1990s. The hospital specialises in oncology, Emergency medical services, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The Synagogue Shomré Hadas, commonly known as the Hollandse Synagoge (English: Dutch Synagogue). is a Modern Orthodox synagogue built in Antwerp, Belgium. The building is so named because it was commissioned by descendants of Jews who came to Antwerp from the Netherlands in the early 19th century. It was the first large synagogue in Antwerp. Today the synagogue is used for services only on Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Shabbat morning service.

Museum Mayer van den Bergh is a museum in Antwerp, Belgium, housing the collection of the art dealer and collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). The major works are from the Gothic and Renaissance period in the Netherlands and Belgium, including paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

The Wide White Space gallery was an art gallery in Antwerp, Belgium. It opened on the ground floor of the house known as "Het Bootje" in Antwerp's Plaatsnijdersstraat [1] in Autumn 1966. Early exhibitions included works by Dr Hugo Heyrman (The Happy Spacemaker) and Panamarenko. In its first years the gallery hosted many of the leading lights of the European art scene. The gallery was an initiative of Anny De Decker and Bernd Lohaus. It closed in 1976. During its existence the gallery showed work by artists such as Carl André, Richard Artschwager, Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Christo, Dan Flavin, Gotthard Graubner, Edward Kienholz, Bruce Naumann, Richard Long, Piero Manzoni, Gerhard Richter, Dieter Roth, Bernard Schultze, Niele Toroni, Günther Uecker, Victor Vasarely and Andy Warhol. Wide White Space worked particularly closely with Joseph Beuys, In 2012 Anny De Decker was honoured with the ART COLOGNE prize of €10,000 for her work with Wide White Space Gallery. Objectif Exhibitions (vzw) was a not-for-profit contemporary art center in Antwerp, Belgium.

Bourla Theatre (also known as Bourlaschouwburg) is a theatre located in Antwerp that seats around 900. The building is designed in a neoclassical style on the site of the former Tapissierspand tapestry market. The theatre was designed on request from the city in 1827 by the city architect Pierre Bourla. Construction began in 1829, but was delayed due to the Belgian Revolution. The theatre was finally finished in 1834 and opened under the name, Grand Théâtre or Théâtre Royal Français, on account of its ownership by a French company. Presently, the Bourla houses the theatre company Het Toneelhuis, which is a merger of the companies, Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg and Blauwe Maandag Compagnie.The Bourla is the last remaining municipal theatre in Europe with original stage machinery, which fill five levels above and below the stage. The building has been named a protected building since 1938, and therefore is regarded among the most important historic buildings in Belgium.

The Zuid ("South") in Antwerp is a currently fashionable area of Antwerp. Revived in the mid-1980s, it has an attractive street plan and a few Art Nouveau buildings, such as the former Volkshuis (or Maison du Peuple) on the Volkstraat, but which now houses the Rudolf Steiner school. Three museums, numerous commercial art galleries, fashionable cafes and restaurants, two arts' centres and a sprinkling of up-market shops add to the attractions of the area.

Our Lady College (Dutch: Onze-Lieve-Vrouwecollege) is a private Catholic primary and secondary school in Antwerp, Belgium. The school was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1575 and the school building was designed by Jules Bilmeyer, completed in 1875.
