The Velim test centre (Czech: Zkušební centrum Velim) is a railway rolling stock testing facility at Cerhenice, close to the town of Kolín in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Perhaps its most notable feature is the Cerhenice railway test circuit, which consists of two large standard gauge railway track ovals, designed to allow the continuous running of rail vehicles for evaluation and testing. The Velim test centre was constructed during the 1960s and was largely used for domestic purposes early on. During the 1990s, it became increasing popular with international customers, which drove demands to recondition the centre's facilities to fulfill the latest standards of the rail industry. Between 2005 and 2014, an extensive modernisation programme was undertaken at Velim; this involved most aspects of its operations, including power supplies, signalling, overhead electrification, preparation halls, and track. The Velim test centre is presently owned by the Railway Research Institute (VUZ, Výzkumný ústav železniční), a wholly owned subsidiary of the national railway operator, České dráhy. It has become one of the main testing locations for new types of rolling stock designed for use in Europe, and has been a fully accredited European test centre since March 1995.

The D11 motorway (Czech: Dálnice D11) is a highway in the Czech Republic. Plans to build a highway connecting Prague and Hradec Králové date from 1938; construction finally began in 1978. Today it consists of one continuous segment Praha - Poděbrady - Libice nad Cidlinou - Libčany - Plačice - Plotiště - Smiřice - Jaroměř and last segment Jaroměř - Trutnov - border CZ/PL (polish expressway S3) is planned and waits for permits. It is part of European route E67 "Via Baltica" from Prague in the Czech Republic to Helsinki in Finland by way of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Three lanes in each direction are planned by 2025 between Prague and Jirny (8 km) and to Poděbrady after 2025.

The Battle of Kolín (Kolin) on 18 June 1757 saw 54,000 Austrians under Count von Daun defeat 34,000 Prussians under Frederick the Great during the Third Silesian War (Seven Years' War). Prussian attempts to turn the Austrian right flank turned into piecemeal frontal attacks and were defeated in five and a half hours of combat. The Prussians lost 13,733 men, the Austrians 8,100. Frederick gave up the siege of Prague as well as his planned march on Vienna and retreated to Saxony.
