Chesterton, Oxfordshire

Akeman Street is a Roman road in southern England between the modern counties of Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire. It is approximately 117 kilometres (73 mi) long and runs roughly east–west.Akeman Street linked Watling Street just north of Verulamium (near modern St Albans) with the Fosse Way at Corinium Dobunnorum (now Cirencester). Evidence suggests that the route may well have been an older track, metalled and reorganised by the Romans. Its course passes through towns and villages including Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring, Aylesbury, Alchester (outside modern Bicester), Stonesfield (where a large Roman villa was discovered around 1712), Chesterton, Kirtlington, Ramsden and Asthall.Parts of the A41 road between Berkhamsted and Bicester use the course of the former Roman road, as did the Sparrows Herne turnpike between Berkhamsted and Aylesbury. A minor road between Chesterton and Kirtlington also uses its course. Other parts are in use as public footpaths, including a 6-mile (10 km) stretch between Tackley and Stonesfield that is part of the Oxfordshire Way.

Wendlebury is a village and civil parish about 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Bicester and about 1⁄2 mile (800 m) from Junction 9 of the M40. Junction 9 is where the A34 and A41 roads meet the M40, and it is also called the Wendlebury Interchange.A stream flows through the centre of the village, parallel with the main street. The 2011 census recorded the parish's population as 421.The toponym is derived from Old English, meaning the burh of a Saxon named Wændel.

Alchester is the site of an ancient Roman town. The site is not included in any ancient references; hence, the Roman name is not known. However, Eilert Ekwall contended that it appears as Alavna in the Ravenna Cosmography, with the addition of the Old English ceaster to signify a Roman fort. It lies about 2 miles (3 km) south of Bicester, in the northwest corner of the civil parish of Wendlebury in the English county of Oxfordshire.Alchester had a strategic location in Roman Britain at a crossroads on the Silchester–Dorchester on Thames–Towcester road and the Cirencester–St Albans road (Akeman Street). Recent excavations have shown that it was the site of one of the earliest legionary fortresses in Roman Britain after the invasion of 43 AD. The site has been the subject of investigation since 1996, firstly under the auspices of Oxford University Archaeological Society, then under those of the University of Leicester and the University of Edinburgh.

Bicester Avenue Home and Garden Centre is a shopping centre in Bicester, Oxfordshire, England, that opened in May 2007. Some of the stores at Bicester Avenue include Bicester Avenue Garden Centre, owned by Blue Diamond Garden Centres, World of Water tropical fish shop, Lakeland and Cotswold Outdoor. The large garden centre contains a soft play area for children. Bicester Avenue is located just south of Bicester and south of the much larger outlet centre Bicester Village on the A41 towards Oxford. It is within walking distance of Bicester Village.

Wendlebury Halt was a railway station on the Varsity Line, located 0.5 miles (800 m) east of the village of Wendlebury in Alchester. The London and North Western Railway opened the halt in 1905 and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway closed it in 1926.

The Bicester School (previously Bicester Community College) is a mixed, multi-heritage, secondary school, with 963 students (including a sixth form). It is situated in Bicester, Oxfordshire, England, and occupies a 32-acre (130,000 m2) site leading off Queens Avenue. The school's sports facilities are used by Bicester Athletic Club, which has been awarded National Lottery funding to add all-weather surfaces to the sports field's jumping and throwing event areas.

Bicester Village is a designer outlet shopping centre on the outskirts of Bicester, a town in Oxfordshire, England. It is owned by Value Retail plc. The centre opened in 1995. The centre is the second most visited location in the United Kingdom by Chinese tourists, after Buckingham Palace.

Bure Park is a 8.4-hectare (21-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Bicester in Oxfordshire. It is owned by Bicester Town Council and managed by Cherwell District Council.The River Bure runs through the park and supplies water to a pond which has great crested newts. Habitats include grassland, scrub, broadleaved woodland and hedges.

Wendlebury Meads and Mansmoor Closes is a 73.2-hectare (181-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Wendlebury in Oxfordshire.Wendlebury Meads consists of several meadows which have been traditionally managed, and have complex and varied flora. Calcareous pastures were common in southern England at the beginning of the twentieth century, and these meadows are among the few have survived agricultural improvements. Almost all show evidence of medieval ridge and furrow ploughing. Mansmoor Closes were enclosed very early, before 1622, and are important from both a landscape and archaeological point of view. More than 160 plant species have been recorded, including 11 of dandelion. There are birds such as snipe and curlew, and many common butterflies. The site is private land, but it is crossed by a public footpath between Charlton-on-Otmoor and Wendlebury.

Woodsides Meadow is a 4-hectare (9.9-acre) nature reserve south of Wendlebury in Oxfordshire. It is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It is part of Wendlebury Meads and Mansmoor Closes, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.This meadow still has medieval ridge and furrow marks, showing that it has not been farmed by modern methods. More than 100 species of wild flower have been recorded, such as pepper-saxifrage, sneezewort, green-winged orchid, cuckooflower and ragged-robin. Skylarks and brown hares are often seen on the site.

Weston Otmoor was a proposed new eco-town in the north of Oxfordshire, England, in countryside to the east of the village of Weston-on-the-Green. It would have been next to Junction 9 of the M40 motorway and 7 miles (11 km) north of Oxford and was one of 15 bids shortlisted by the Department of Communities and Local Government on 3 April 2008. Eco-towns were subject to a consultation by the Department of Communities and Local Government ending 30 June 2008.

Bicester Village (2015–present, previously Bicester Town 1987–2014, Bicester London Road 1954–1968, Bicester 1850–1954) is one of two railway stations serving the town of Bicester in Oxfordshire (the other is Bicester North). It is 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Oxford on the Oxford-Bedford line near its junction with the Chiltern Main Line. The renamed Bicester Village station reopened on 25 October 2015 with trains initially running between Oxford Parkway and London Marylebone. All trains serving it are operated by Chiltern Railways.
