Clearlake Highlands is a former unincorporated community now incorporated in Clearlake, in Lake County, California. It is located on the north shore of the southeast end of Clear Lake, just south of the village of Clearlake Park, 15 miles (24 km) east-southeast of Lakeport, at an elevation of 1348 feet (411 m).Clearlake was originally settled by Americans in the late 1860s. Prior to settlement by Americans the area was inhabited by Pomo Indians. Their artifacts and grave sites have been found along Cache Creek at the Southern city limit as well as the area around Borax Lake in the northwest portion of the city. Clearlake remained a farming and ranching community until the 1920s when it became a resort destination along with other areas in Lake County. A large portion of the area which was to become the City of Clearlake was subdivided in 1925. Most of the city lots are only 50' by 100' feet and none of the infrastructure was established at the time of subdivision. A majority of the roads were never paved and some only exist on paper. Clearlake has historically depended on tourism as its main industry with the attraction being Clear Lake. This has been a boom or bust cycle over the decades depending on several factors. Clear Lake is California's largest natural lake and boasts itself as being "The Bass Capital of the West".

Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is a California State Historic Park and nature reserve preserving a tule marsh, archaeological sites of the Pomo people, and historic ranch structures. It is located in Lake County, California, United States. Anderson Marsh is located at the head of Cache Creek on the southeast corner of Clear Lake, the largest natural lake completely within the borders of California. The park is between the cities of Lower Lake and Clearlake on State Route 53, north of Calistoga in the wine country. The park is open year-round.

Thurston Lake is a lake adjacent to the southeast side of the much larger Clear Lake. in Northern California. In the past, volcanic deposits formed a ridge separating Thurston Lake from Clear Lake. The lake is notably turbid, the result of clayey runoff from nearby Manning Flat.

Rancho Lupyomi (also called "Laguna de Lup Yomi") was a Mexican land grant in present-day Lake County, California given in 1844 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Salvador Vallejo and his brother Juan Antonio Vallejo. Rancho Lupyomi encompassed present-day Clearlake. Rancho Lupyomi was one of three land grants (along with Rancho Guenoc and Rancho Collayomi) in Lake County. Lake County was formed in 1861 of land taken mainly from Napa County and the northwest portion taken from Mendocino County.

Lower Lake Stone Jail, in Lower Lake, California, is a one-room jail claimed to be the smallest jail in the United States, was erected in 1876 of stone locally quarried and reinforced with iron. During the days of the first quicksilver operations of the Sulphur Bank Mine, lasting from 1873 to 1883, rapid town growth and the urgent need for civil order necessitated the building of a jail. Stephen Nicolai, one of the first stonemasons in Lower Lake, built the jail from local materials with the help of Theodore and John Copsey. The tiny jail is now defunct, and has been designated California Historical Landmark #429.
