Hills Flat is an unincorporated community in Nevada County, California. It lies at an elevation of 2457 feet (749 m). Hills Flat is 0.5 miles (0.8 km) northeast of Grass Valley.

Grass Valley Pioneer Jewish Cemetery, also known as Shaar Zedek (English: Gate of Righteousness) is a no longer active Jewish cemetery founded in 1856 by the Hebrew Benevolent of Society of Grass Valley, and is located in Grass Valley, California, U.S. The last burial happened in 1891. It is a private site operated by the Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and Landmarks in the West and is not open to the public.

Grass Valley is a city in Nevada County, California, United States. Situated at roughly 2,500 feet (760 m) in elevation in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, this northern Gold Country city is 57 miles (92 km) by car from Sacramento, 64 miles (103 km) from Sacramento International Airport, 88 miles (142 km) west of Reno, and 143 miles (230 km) northeast of San Francisco. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 12,860.

On April 19, 1865, Secessionists skirmished with 25 troopers of the 1st California Cavalry Battalion in Grass Valley, California in the wake of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

The Holbrooke Hotel is located in Grass Valley, California, USA. It is notable as the oldest hotel that has been in continuous operation in California's Mother Lode. The hotel was built in 1862 in mid-19th century Mother Lode masonry architectural style, and incorporated the Golden Gate Saloon which has been in continuous operation since 1852.

Empire Mine State Historic Park is a state-protected mine and park in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Grass Valley, California, U.S. The Empire Mine is on the National Register of Historic Places, a federal Historic District, and a California Historical Landmark. Since 1975 California State Parks has administered and maintained the mine as a historic site. The Empire Mine is "one of the oldest, largest, deepest, longest and richest gold mines in California". Between 1850 and its closure in 1956, the Empire Mine produced 5.8 million ounces (165 tons) of gold, extracted from 367 miles (591 km) of underground passages.

The Grass Valley Public Library (renamed the Grass Valley Library-Royce Branch) is a Carnegie library and on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Grass Valley, California and a part of the Nevada County Library System, it is open Tuesday through Saturday.

The Home of Lola Montez is located in downtown Grass Valley, California at 248 Mill Street. Lola Montez, the internationally known singer and dancer, moved here in 1853, and this is the only home she ever owned.

Union Hill is a former settlement in Nevada County, California, 1.5 mi (2.4 km) from Grass Valley. Its elevation is 2,700 ft (820 m) above sea level.Gold mining is recorded as early as January 30, 1851. A number of mines yielded eighty dollars per ton at times. Sulfurets were said to yield 420 dollars per ton. First arrastres were in use, then a number of stamp mills. The Union Hill School District, established in 1868, continues to operate in Grass Valley, though at a different location. Beginning in 1876, travelers could reach Union Hill via the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. Its station was located on the Union Hill road, southeast of Grass Valley and northwest of Colfax.The Union Hill mine was a good producer of gold for many years.
