Gatenby is a secluded village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated about two miles east of the A1(M) road, near to the River Swale. Nearby is RAF Leeming. The population of the parish was estimated at 40 in 2010. At the 2011 Census the population remained less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Exelby, Leeming and Londonderry. The place name is found in the Domesday Book as Ghetenesbi, the meaning is unclear, one interpretation is "goat's tongue ridge farm", a farm situated on a narrow ridge. Holme (or Holme on Swale) is a small village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is located near Pickhill, Sinderby and Ainderby Quernhow, on the west bank of the River Swale. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 60 in 2014.Hambleton Ales is a small brewery which started life in Holme. It has now moved to Melmerby. Holme was historically a township in the ancient parish of Pickhill with Roxby in the North Riding of Yorkshire. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it belonged to the Bishop of Durham as part of his manor of Hutton Conyers and Howgrave. The township formed a detached part of the wapentake of Allertonshire, and retained a detached part at Howgrave, 3 miles (5 km) west of the village, apparently only a single farm, into the 19th century. The township was for that reason referred to as Holme cum Howgrave. Holme became a separate civil parish in 1866.

Ainderby Quernhow is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The village is situated on the B6267 Thirsk to Masham road just east of the A1(M) and is about five miles west of Thirsk. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 70 in 2014.The Quernhow at Ainderby is a small mound on the nearby Roman Road which marked the boundary between the parishes of Ainderby and Middleton Quernhow. The mound at Ainderby Quernhow was demolished to make way for the upgrading of the A1(M) and its history is commemorated in a stone laid down in the grounds of the Quernhow Café which now adjoins the A6055.Ainderby Mires and Ainderby Steeple are also in the district, the latter refers to the local church spire, the former to marshy mires.Ainderby is a place name originally meant village belonging to Eindrithi, a Viking whose name meant 'sole-ruler'. Quernhow, which has also been spelled Whernhowe and Whernou means mill-hill. The first element derives from the Old Norse word kvern meaning a mill stone. How, deriving from the Old Norse word haugr , means a hill. How is a common element in Yorkshire place names but rare in County Durham.

Newby Wiske is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Wiske, about five miles north-west of Thirsk.

Londonderry is a village near the Yorkshire Dales, England situated 4 miles (6 kilometres) south-east of Bedale, almost on the A1 road. It was part of the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire and is in the historic North Riding of Yorkshire. It is named after the Marquesses of Londonderry, who took their name from County Londonderry, now in Northern Ireland, and were colliery owners in this area of England. Londonderry Lodge was a former Transport Café in the village. The café is now closed, having served the traffic on the A1 road for 100 years. The building has been listed as Grade II since 1966. With the upgrading of the A1 to A1(M) standard, the junction with the A1 was diverted away from Londonderry (with even the new service road, the A6055, taking a route west of the new road as opposed to going through the hamlet). As a consequence of this, traffic has been lost from the hamlet, lorry traffic especially so. A noted refuelling service station have moved their business from Londonderry to Leeming Bar because of this traffic shift.
