Old Survivor, also known as the Grandfather Tree, is the last remaining old-growth coastal redwood of the redwood forest that once populated the Oakland Hills in California.

Aurelia Reinhardt Alumnae Memorial House is a building on the campus of Mills College in Oakland, California. It was designed by architect Clarence W. Mayhew, and named after college president Aurelia Henry Reinhardt. It was completed in 1949. Mayhew's design gave it "gabled roofs, wide eaves, and easy access to gardens" considered "fundamentally Californian design".

Mills College Art Museum is a museum and art gallery in Oakland, California. The originally all-girls' school Mills College was founded by Susan and Cyrus Mills, who were both interested in art and history. Susan's sister Jane Tolman was an art historian who developed the art history curriculum in 1875. With a Tolman Mills bequest the present museum building was constructed in 1925 called the Mills College Art Gallery. Albert M. Bender, the Mills College Trustee chiefly responsible for the museum's completion, also made a gift of 40 paintings and 75 prints by contemporary San Francisco Bay Area artists, and since then the gallery has become an important public collection of modern art in Northern California. Bender himself later became a principal founder of what is now the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Beulah Heights is a former settlement in Alameda County, California now annexed to Oakland. It was located 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Mills College. A post office operated at Beulah Heights from 1907 to 1911. One of the most notable buildings in the former settlement was the Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People which was a racially segregated nursing home designed by local civic and religious leaders within the African American community in 1897 to provide care for their elderly and homeless, who were otherwise ineligible to enroll in the other nearby retirement homes based on their race.

Mills College is a private women's liberal arts college in Oakland, California. Mills is an undergraduate women's college for women and gender non-binary students with graduate programs for students of all genders. Mills was founded as the Young Ladies Seminary in 1852 in Benicia, California; it was relocated to Oakland in 1871, and became the first women's college west of the Rockies. In 2014, Mills became the first single-sex college in the U.S. to adopt an admission policy explicitly welcoming transgender students.Mills College offers more than 45 undergraduate majors and minors and over 30 graduate degrees, certificates, and credentials. It is home to the Mills College School of Education and the Lorry I. Lokey School of Business & Public Policy. In March 2021, citing financial concerns that were augmented by the pandemic, President Elizabeth L. Hillman announced that Mills College would begin transitioning away from being a degree-granting college in the fall of 2021, instead becoming Mills Institute. The announcement was made to the Mills College alumnae in a letter posted online.In June 2021, following interest in merging with UC Berkeley by some Mills College alumnae, the college instead announced that it intended to merge with Northeastern University (a once all-male college that admitted its first female students in 1943) to become Mills College at Northeastern University.Despite a campaign by Mills College alumnae to stop the controversial merger with Northeastern University and a temporary stay imposed by a judge, the merger was confirmed by the Mills College Board of Trustees on September 14, 2021. President Hillman's role in the new Institution has not yet been announced. Mills College alumnae, who have donated a considerable portion of the college's endowment, continue to pursue legal options for halting the merger with Northeastern while they fight for financial transparency and a financial rationale for the immediacy of the merger, given the college's billions of dollars in assets, including Bay Area real estate, rare books, and a valuable art collection that is housed by the Mills College Art Museum. Uncertainty remains regarding institutional control of Mills College's considerable financial assets. No financial details regarding the impending merger have been made public to date.

Margaret Carnegie Library is a historic Carnegie Library building completed in 1906 at Mills College in California. It was designed by Julia Morgan, the first woman architect to be licensed in California. It was the second of the many Morgan designed buildings on campus.Made of reinforced concrete it includes uses Mission-style architecture details and has a red tile roof, iron balconies and arched windows. The interior has exposed wood beams. The library is named for Andrew Carnegie's daughter (his mother was also named Margaret).

Julia Morgan School for Girls is an all-girls middle school in Oakland, California, named for Julia Morgan, the building's architect and the first woman to be licensed in California as an architect. The school is housed in a historical and architecturally significant building that she designed. The building was constructed in 1924 and was originally used for The Ming Quong Home for Chinese girls, an orphanage. It was purchased and donated to Mills College in 1936 and became known as Graduate House. After 1960 it was known as Alderwood Hall. In 2004, the building was renovated for use as the Julia Morgan School for Girls. The building is located at 5000 MacArthur Boulevard. From 1925 until 1937 the building was used as an orphanage. After being purchased by Mills College in 1936, it was known mainly as the Graduate House' until 1960. Later it was used as a conference area, for classrooms, and as a residence hall until 2004. In 2004 it was leased to Julia Morgan School for Girls. Morgan designed many of the buildings on the Mills College campus.

The Emile L. Labadie Arboretum is an arboretum operated by the Landscape Horticulture department of Merritt College, 12500 Campus Drive, Oakland, California, United States. Emile Labadie was an esteemed professor in the department and also worked for the San Mateo Department of Agriculture.

Merritt College is a public community college in Oakland, California. Merritt, like the other three campuses of the Peralta Community College District, is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. The college enrolls approximately 6,000 students.

Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy (PHA) was founded in 1953 as a Seventh-day Adventist Elementary and Junior High School in Pleasant Hill, California. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system. It is an elementary, middle school, and high school, PHAA is a co-ed school, and is fully accredited with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges and Universities.

Golden Gate Academy (GGA) was founded in 1923 as a Seventh-day Adventist Elementary and High School on Mountain Boulevard in Berkeley, California. It remained there for 23 years until it moved to its current position in the Oakland Hills next to Holy Names University in 1949.The Northern California Conference of the Adventist church closed down Golden Gate Academy for lack of enrollment. The grounds are now used as a private arts school. The nearest K-8 Adventist elementary school to GGA is San Francisco Adventist School, located near City College of San Francisco. The nearest Adventist High School to GGA is Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy.
