Siege of Breda (1637)

The Capture of Breda of 1581, also known as the Haultepenne Fury, occurred on 26–27 July when Spanish troops under the command of Claude de Berlaymont, lord of Haultepenne, took Breda by surprise after a sentry was bribed by a follower of the king, Charles de Gavre, who was kept a prisoner at the castle. The corrupt sentry allowed the Spanish troops to enter the castle. Despite the resistance by Breda's citizens, the attackers succeeded in taking the most important city gates and launched an attack on the city hall, the tower, and the church. The defenders surrendered on the condition that the city would not be looted. At 10.00 a.m. fighting stopped and the sack and massacre started. Some 584 citizens died during this relatively short event.

The capture of Breda was a short battle during the Eighty Years' War and Anglo–Spanish War during which a Dutch and English army led by Maurice of Nassau captured the heavily protected city of Breda. Using a clever tactic reminiscent of the Trojan horse, a small assault force hid in a peat barge, entered the city of Breda, and proceeded to take it over resulting in a minimum number of casualties. It was the turning point of the war as the forces under Maurice were able to take the offensive.

In 2011, the restaurant temporarily moved to the manor of the estate while the coach house was renovated. Most parts of the estate are Rijksmonuments, including the coach house itself.

`t Ploegske was a football stadium in Breda, Netherlands. It was used for football matches and hosted the home matches of NAC Breda. The stadium was able to hold 3,000 people, including 150 seats. The stadium was opened in 1916 and demolished in 1931.

Ginneken en Bavel was a municipality in the Dutch province of North Brabant, located southeast of the city of Breda. It covered the villages of Ginneken (now a neighbourhood of Breda) and Bavel. Ginneken en Bavel existed until 1942, when the village of Ginneken was transferred to Breda, and the other part of the area became a new municipality called Nieuw-Ginneken.

Bouvigne Castle is a castle outside the Ginneken district in the Dutch province of North Brabant, near the Mastbos south of Breda. Behind it lies the Markdal. It has been owned by the Brabantse Delta Water Board since 1972. After restoration between 1975 and 1977, it was reopened by Prince Claus on 13 September 1977.

The school has over 30,000 students studying 40 courses in 18 institutes. There are 3,000 employees. Avans University of Applied Sciences itself was founded on January 1, 2004, as a union of Hogeschool 's-Hertogenbosch and Hogeschool Brabant in Tilburg, Breda, and Etten-Leur. Hogeschool Brabant itself was a union from 1988 of Hogeschool West-Brabant (Etten-Leur and Breda) and Hogeschool Midden-Brabant (Tilburg). The oldest branch of Avans University of Applied Sciences is the Kunstacademie in 's-Hertogenbosch, which was founded on October 1, 1812.

Zandberg is a neighbourhood and residential district to the southeast of the city centre of Breda, an extension raised in the 1920s and 1930s. It is only one of four parts of one of the seven greater quarters of that city, officially called 'Breda East' (Breda Oost).

The siege of Breda took place from 19 to 22 December 1813 and was a small yet important engagement between French and allied troops in the Liberation Wars. Breda was abandoned by its garrison early in December and occupied by a Russian force. With Breda being the strategic link between the French garrisons of Gorinchem and Antwerp, and to hold control over the main road between Breda and Antwerp, the French began a counterattack. Meanwhile, Allied reinforcements were underway. After a scramble for the town and a three-day siege, the French withdrew back to Antwerp, and Breda became a distribution point for Allied troops and supplies.
