Honington, Warwickshire

Honington Hall is a privately owned 17th century country house at Honington, near Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire. It has Grade I listed building status. The Manor of Honington was in the ownership of the Priory of Coventry until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. In 1540 it was granted by the Crown to Robert Gibbes. The estate was sold by the Gibbes family in about 1670 to Henry Parker who in 1696 succeeded to the Parker Baronetcy and an estate at Melford Hall, Suffolk. The present house was built by Parker in 1682 but was sold by Parker's grandson in 1737 to Joseph Townsend who carried out considerable alterations and extensions in the mid 18th century. The Georgian style house has a number of fine features including round headed niches over the ground floor windows of the east front which contain busts of Roman Emperors. The Townsends held the estate until 1905 when it passed by marriage to Sir Grey Skipwith Bt ( see Skipwith baronets). Later the estate became the seat of the Wiggin family. The house is not generally open to the public but may be available for visitations by prior group arrangements.

Shipston-on-Stour Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team based in Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire. They currently play in Regional 2 South Central - a tier 6 league in the English rugby union system - following the club's promotion from Southern Counties North - due to the restructure of the English leagues at the end of the 2021–22 season.

The Ellen Badger is a small community NHS hospital located within the town of Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, England. It is operated by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital was built in 1896 to a design by Edward William Mountford. It was endowed by the local wine merchant Richard Badger, and named by him in memory of his wife. The street opposite the Hospital's main frontage is called 'Badgers Crescent'.Its facilities include a 16 bedded ward with on site physiotherapy, occupational therapy, x-ray, out-patient clinics and a first aid unit. There is a day unit attached to the hospital together with community nursing services.

Tredington is a village and civil parish on the River Stour in Warwickshire, England. The village is 2 miles (3 km) north of Shipston-on-Stour. The civil parish includes the village of Newbold on Stour and hamlets of Armscote, Blackwell and Darlingscott. The 2011 Census recorded the parish population as 1,422. Tredington civil parish was part of Worcestershire until 1931. The River Stour runs through Tredington.

Shipston-on-Stour railway station was a railway station which served the town of Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire. It was the terminus of the Shipston-on-Stour branch.

Shipston-on-Stour is a town and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon District in southern Warwickshire, England. It is located on the banks of the River Stour, 9 miles (15 km) south-southeast of Stratford-upon-Avon, 10 miles (16 km) north-northwest of Chipping Norton, 14 miles (22 km) south of Warwick and 14.5 miles (23 km) west of Banbury. In the 2021 census, Shipston-on-Stour had a population of 5,849.This area is sometimes termed the Vale of Red Horse, close to the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire borders.

Shipston High School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status in Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, England. It is situated in the North West of the town and has strong links with the community. In recent years it has been greatly oversubscribed for its new year 7 intake and was the 4th most improved school in the country a few years ago. Shipston High School is a small school, only having around 500 students, but proves strong competition for other schools. Shipston High achieves greatly in sports and extra curricular activities such as public speaking. The school was previously well known for its technology-related activities, such as rocketry and RC car racing, but this has been halted for several years. It also had Specialist Technology Status, however schools no longer use specialist status.

Shipston on Stour was a rural district in England from 1894 to 1974. [1] The district covered an area around Shipston-on-Stour. Originally it was a detached part of Worcestershire, but in 1931 it was transferred to the jurisdiction of Warwickshire, and was expanded by the abolition of Brailes Rural District. The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and now forms part of the Stratford-on-Avon district.

The administrative boundaries of Worcestershire, England have been fluid for over 150 years since the first major changes in 1844. There were many detached parts of Worcestershire in the surrounding counties, and conversely there were islands of other counties within Worcestershire. The 1844 Counties (Detached Parts) Act began the process of eliminating these, but the process was not completed until 1966, when Dudley was absorbed into Staffordshire. The expansion of Birmingham and the Black Country during and after the Industrial Revolution also altered the county map considerably. Local government commissions were set up to recommend changes to the local government structures, and as early as 1945 recommendations were made to merge Worcestershire with Herefordshire. Eventually in 1974, a form of this recommendation was carried out, most of Worcestershire was combined with Herefordshire to form a new county named Hereford and Worcester, while the northern Black Country towns and villages of Worcestershire, along with adjoining areas of Staffordshire and Warwickshire, formed the new administrative county of West Midlands. Hereford & Worcester was re-divided into the separate counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire in 1998. Since that time Worcestershire's boundaries have not changed. Redditch opted to join the West Midlands Combined Authority as an associate 'non-constituent' member in October 2015, although this will not affect the borough's status within Worcestershire.

Willington is a village in Warwickshire, England. Population details are included within Barcheston. The origin of the place-name is from Old English tun (homestead or farm) of Wulfāf's (or Wīglāf's) people. It appears as Ullavintone in the Domesday Book, and as Wullavington in 1287.

Halford is a village and civil parish about 3 miles (5 km) north of Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, England. The village is where the Fosse Way Roman road (now the A429 road) crosses the River Stour. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 341. By the river are the earthworks and buried remains of Halford Castle, a motte castle believed to be the predecessor of the present manor house.

Idlicote is a small settlement and civil parish in the English county of Warwickshire, about 3 miles (5 km) north-east of Shipston-on-Stour and 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Stratford-upon-Avon. Population details can be found under Honington. The best known feature is Idlicote House, a grade II listed country house, on a site once owned by St Mary's Abbey. The most notable building is the parish church of Saint James the Great, which has surviving features from the 13th and 14th centuries and a 17th-century chapel added to house tombs of members of the Underhill family of Idlicote. Apart from these two, there are several other listed buildings, including Badger's Cottage and Badger's Farm, the Old Rectory, the Whitehouse and Nineveh farmhouses, and the dovecote at Idlicote House. The parish is considered too small for a parish council and instead has a parish meeting. It also forms part of the Brailes ward of the Stratford-on-Avon District. In 1868 The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland said of Idlicote: "IDLICOTE, a parish in the Brailes division of the hundred of Kington, county Warwick, 3 miles N. E. of Shipston-on-Stour, its post town. The parish, which is small, is wholly agricultural. It is a meet for the Warwick hounds. There is no village, only a few farmhouses. Stone is quarried. The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Worcester, value £80. The church is dedicated to St. James. The parochial charities produce about £5 per annum. Idlicote House, the principal residence, is the seat of Captain H. K. P. Peach. It formerly belonged to the monks of Kenilworth, and after passing through several hands, was finally purchased by the present owner, who is lord of the manor and sole landowner."
