The Battle of Gainsborough was a battle in the First English Civil War, fought on 28 July 1643. The strategically important town of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, was a Royalist base used for harassing the Parliamentarians who were generally dominant in Lincolnshire, but was taken by Parliamentarians in July 1643. An attempt to recapture Gainsborough by Charles Cavendish and the Royalists was foiled in a battle in which Colonel Oliver Cromwell distinguished himself as a cavalry leader.

Knaith is a village and civil parish about 3 miles (5 km) south of the town of Gainsborough in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 335.Knaith is a community with roots in Anglo-Saxon England. Knaith is listed as Cheneiðe in the Domesday Book of 1086 with three households, a meadow of 25 acres (10 ha) and 26 acres (11 ha) of woodland, located in the ancient wapentake of Well, in the West Riding of the Parts of Lindsey. Well no longer exists as a named location, but can be identified on the ground. The Lord of Knaith in both 1066 and 1086 was the St Mary's Abbey of Stow, and the Tenant in Chief in 1086 was the Bishop of Lincoln (St Mary).There are earthwork remains of Knaith medieval village. These include a medieval deer park created in the early 13th century, which became a possession of John Darcy, 1st Baron Darcy de Knayth, and his heirs. South of Knaith Hall are garden remains from the 16th or 17th century, and the remains of an 18th-century deer park.Knaith Hall is a red-brick 15th-century building with some timber framing and is now Grade II listed.The Church of England parish church of St Mary is 11th century, with alterations from the 14th and 18th, and an 1894 restoration. It is a Grade II* listed building. St Mary's might be the transept or nave of the church of Heynings Priory, a Cistercian nunnery founded probably around 1150.

Lea railway station was a station in Lea, Lincolnshire, England, south of Gainsborough. It was opened in 1849 by the Great Northern Railway, but was closed to passengers in 1957 and closed entirely in 1963.

Gainsborough Lea Road is one of two railway stations that serve the town of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, England, the other being Gainsborough Central, which is located in the town centre. The station is managed by East Midlands Railway and is located 14+1⁄4 miles (23 km) northwest of Lincoln Central on the A156 Lea Road in the south of the town. It opened in 1867 on a single line of the Great Northern Railway, who ran four trains a day from Gainsborough to Lincoln.

The road has many towns on its route including Rotherham, Maltby, Gainsborough and Market Rasen. It is mostly single road throughout its length but has some stretches of dual carriageway as well.

Heynings Priory was a priory in Knaith, Lincolnshire, England. The priory of Heynings was founded by Rayner de Evermue, Lord of Knaith, for Cistercian nuns, probably early in the reign of King Stephen, and the patronage of the house remained with the lords of Knaith through most of its history. Rayner de Evermue died before its completion, leaving them with a meagre endowment which left them extremely poor. The priory was dissolved in 1539 by Jane Sanford, Prioress, and eleven nuns.The site was granted to Sir Thomas Heneage and his wife Katherine and at his death in 1553 passed by marriage to Lord Willoughby of Parham, along with the manor of Knaith. Heneage's grant in 1540 was 'the house and site of the late priory...the church, steeple and churchyard of the same'. The actual site is unknown but is believed to be at the site of Park Farm South.

Gainsborough Central railway station is one of two railway stations in the town of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. The station is on the Brigg branch of the Sheffield–Lincoln line. Services are currently operated by Northern Trains.The town's other station is the busier Gainsborough Lea Road.

Gainsborough Riverside Festival was an annual community Arts/Heritage event that runs on the second weekend of June in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire on the banks of the River Trent. The day begins around noon with a community parade along the banks of the river and entertainment is provided throughout the day until 10:30pm when the day is brought to a head with an extravagant fireworks display. Entertainment was provided throughout the day courtesy of local bands, musicians, community groups and street performers. There is also a market for community groups and organisations usually accompanied by a continental market running along the riverside to the town centre. Art is exhibited on the day along the riverside provided by local artists and groups. The festival which is themed differently each year has run since 2002, and from 2005 to 2012 has attracted tens of thousands of visitors.In 2014 the festival was cancelled due to a lack of funding.

Somerby (or Somerby by Gainsborough) is a hamlet in the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east from the town of Gainsborough, and lies in the civil parish of Corringham. The settlement is best known as the home of Richard Topcliffe, the infamous Tudor torturer and persecutor of Roman Catholics. Topcliffe brought one of his victims, Anne Bellamy, to Somerby in 1593 where she had a baby - believed to be Topcliffe's. He died here in 1604.Excavations at Somerby in 1957 showed it was once larger, revealing 15th-century streets and house foundations, with finds ranging from the 12th to the 16th century. Much of the medieval village of Somerby was the site of an ancient deer park which belonged to Somerby Park mansion.Somerby Park is described in the 1872 Whites Directory as "a commodious ancient mansion in the Elizabethan style".

The A156 is an 11 miles (18 km) long road that runs from the A57 near Saxilby and heads north to Gainsborough. The road runs entirely within Lincolnshire right next to the border with Nottinghamshire. It is a single carriageway for its entire length apart from one small stretch at Torksey Lock where the A1133 joins from Newark-on-Trent.

Gainsborough Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. The town hall was the headquarters of Gainsborough Urban District Council and now serves as a local entertainment venue.
