Granite Historic District

Granite is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. Originally known as Waltersville, it was renamed Granite in recognition of its principal product (the Woodstock Quartz Monzonite was quarried). The village was the center of this industry, which during its peak in the late 19th century provided building materials for major projects throughout the eastern seaboard. The Granite Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.The Nike Missile Base BA-79 was located in Granite. It was active from 1954 to 1974. In 1999, final scenes of The Blair Witch Project were filmed in the Griggs House in Patapsco Valley State Park. The state planned on demolishing the historic structure until publicity from the movie brought contributors for its preservation. The house was demolished at a later date without an announcement.

The Griggs House was a historic home located in Granite, Maryland. It was a two-story house constructed in the mid-19th century. The home is associated with the film, The Blair Witch Project. The house was a built in the style of Federal architecture, as a two-story stucco faced post and beam wood construction house on a stone foundation. It was two bays by three bays wide, and situated near the Smith/Sumwalt house and the Granite quarry which the town was renamed for. The house was visible on the 1877 Baltimore County Atlas. In 1984, the Department of Natural Resources conducted a historical survey of the Griggs property that resided on parkland of Patapsco Valley State Park. The property was not in use by this time and had interior details removed by vandals.In 1999, the house was used for the climactic ending of The Blair Witch Project. After filming, the State of Maryland announced it would demolish the historic home. As fans were visiting the abandoned house, its condition deteriorated. Funds were raised to save the building based on the success of the movie, and the State released press announcements that the property would be spared. However, the house was demolished soon afterwards without an announcement.

Woodstock College was a Jesuit seminary that existed from 1869 to 1974. It was the oldest Jesuit seminary in the United States. The school was located in Woodstock, Maryland, west of Baltimore, from its establishment until 1969, when it moved to New York City, where it operated in cooperation with the Union Theological Seminary and the Jewish Theological Seminary. The school closed in 1974. It was survived by the Woodstock Theological Center, an independent, nonprofit Catholic research institute located at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Located in the Simpsonville area of Columbia in Howard County, Maryland, United States, Athol Plantation. Reverend James Macgill of Scotland, built the plantation house on lands patented in 1730. The stone house was constructed by masons brought from his homeland stating in 1732, and was completed in 1740. A square cupola and porch were added in the 19th century, and later removed. In 1866 the house was the residence of Richard Gambrill MacGill. From 1927 to 1946 the Melvin Coar family occupied the house.

Woodstock is an unincorporated community which is a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The original village of Woodstock is located in Howard County, and also includes portions of Baltimore County and Carroll County.

The Howard County Conservancy is a non-profit land trust that operates a nature center in Woodstock, Maryland. It is located at the 300-year-old, 232-acre (0.94 km2) Mt. Pleasant Farm.

Daniels is a ghost town straddling the Patapsco River east of Woodstock and north of Old Ellicott City in Baltimore and Howard counties, Maryland, United States. It is the location of the Daniels Mill, a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Daniels is the home town of former Howard County Executive and State Senator James N. Robey. A postal office operated in the community from 1 March 1943 to 31 August 1971.

Elmonte, also known as Twilford, is a historic home located at Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story country house, built of random ashlar granite in the Italian villa style, and is thought to have been completed in 1858. To the rear of the mansion is a stuccoed carriage house with a two-car garage. East of the house is a large wooden barn with a slate roof and a log smokehouse. The home was built by a member of the Dorsey family, who also built nearby Dorsey Hall.Elmonte was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Daniels Mill is a historic mill complex located at Daniels, Howard County, Maryland, in a sheltered, wooded valley of the upper Patapsco River. The complex consists of seven early industrial structures, several concrete block and brick structures of 20th century date, and Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, a granite church built in the High Victorian Gothic style with an off-center tower entrance on the west gable. South of the church is a small cemetery.In the 19th century, an industrial village existed on the site, including stores, a railroad station, a school and several mill workers' houses. The large majority of these supportive structures were demolished in the 1960s. The Elysville Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1829, by Thomas Ely, to manufacture cotton textiles. The mill was erected between August 1845 and spring 1846. It was acquired by the Oskiska Manufacturing Company which went bankrupt, then by the Alberton Manufacturing Company in 1853, and the mill village was called Alberton at least through the 1870s. The mill was then acquired in the 1860s by James S. Gary, who created still another firm which operated the mill until the 1940s, when the C.R. Daniels Company took control.C.R. Daniels was a New York-based company founded in 1918 that manufactured sail cloth material. The company purchased the 500-acre Daniels mill and 118 houses in 1940 for $65,000, doubling its size by 1950, and eventually over 300,000 sq ft. The company produced a wide variety of canvas products and canvas covers with over 200 sewing machines to assemble patterns. Later specialties included fiberglass components and conveyor belts. In 1965, the mill phased out company housing, tearing down the historic buildings and churches. In 1972, flooding from Hurricane Agnes damaged or destroyed the majority of the buildings and mill site. In 1977 a fire destroyed the remainder of the mill.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Elysville is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal stop operated between February 22, 1834, and February 3, 1854.

Alberton is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal office operated in the community from 3 February 1854 to 1 March 1943.Alberton was the site of a large cotton mill along the Patapsco River, founded by James S. Gary after moving from Connecticut in 1839. A store and seventy company buildings for workers were built on 820 acres around the factory. The mill used adult and child labor, including Gary's son, James Albert Gary. In 1866 and 1868, the mill was damaged by flooding, which Gary survived by floating with his daughter on a log. In 1870, James Albert Gary inherited the mill and the town named after him, "Alberton". In 1885, his son, E. Stanley Gary took over the mill, which operated 228 looms and 8,000–9,000 spindles.In 1879, the stone Victorian Gary Memorial church was built and in 1893, St. Alban's chapel was built as an Episcopal church for the mill town. In 1938, the mill and town was sold to the C.R. Daniels company and renamed Daniels.

Ivy Hill is a historic home and farm and plantation located in Marriottsville, Howard County, Maryland. The property was part of General William Hammond Marriott's property. Marriott would later become Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1822. During the Civil War the farm was searched as the potential hiding place of 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA General Bradley Tyler Johnson, who was in the attic at the nearby Mt. Pleasant Farm.
