Joseph McDowell House

McDowell High School is a public high school located in the Western North Carolina town of Marion. The school has approximately 1,700–1,800 students. It is the only high school in McDowell County. The school was built in 1971, and has its own student-run newspaper, the Iliad, and literary magazine, The Muses (formerly known as the Aurora). McDowell High's yearbook finishes the trilogy of MHS publications, and is dubbed The Odyssey. Also there is now a T.V. show on YouTube entitled "MHS Titan News".

Carson–Young House is a historic home located near Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was built about 1860, and is two-story, three-bay, frame I-house with Greek Revival style design influences. A one-story, hip-roofed rear addition was built about 1951. It features a central, one-bay-wide, two-story porch is capped with a full pediment roof. Also on the property is a contributing two-story, brick schoolhouse (c. 1860) and barn.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

The Carson House is a historic house and museum located in Marion, North Carolina. It was the home of Col. John Carson, and served as the McDowell County courthouse when the county was first organized in 1842.

Lone Beech is a historic home located at Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was built between about 1912 and 1915. It is two-story, Neoclassical style dwelling with a broad pedimented two-story ell. It features a two-story pedimented portico, supported by six fluted Tuscan order columns and a one-story wrap-around porch. Also on the property are the contributing one-story frame servant's cottage (c. 1912), barn (c. 1912), and privy (c. 1912).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

First Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located at 12 W. Fort Streets in Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. The congregation was established in 1845, and the current church building was constructed in 1923. It is a one-story plus balcony Classical Revival style brick building set on a raised basement. The front facade features a monumental Ionic order tetrastyle pedimented portico.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Main Street Historic District.

St. Matthew's Lutheran Church is a historic Lutheran church located at 307 W. Court Street in Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was built in 1935 and is a one-story, vernacular Late Gothic Revival-style church constructed with river rocks. The building features lancet windows and flying buttresses.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Main Street Historic District.

The Main Street Historic District is a 21-acre (8.5 ha) national historic district located at Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. In 1991, it included 36 buildings deemed to contribute to the historic character of the area and one other contributing site.Specifically included in the Main Street Historic District are: one church: First Baptist (1914); two former hotels: the Eagle Hotel, which survived the 1894 fire, and the Hotel Marianna (1910); a bank on Main Street built in 1903; the McDowell County Courthouse, which was constructed in 1928; the Public Library (1937), which was originally built as a post office; and the Marion Community Building, built in 1937. Projects are currently underway to revitalize the downtown area as well as to maintain and restore the character of the long-standing buildings.

McDowell County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Erle G. Stillwell and built between 1921 and 1923. It is three-story, late Neoclassical building sheathed in yellow brick. The rectangular structure is composed of a central block flanked by slightly recessed, unornamented wings.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is located in the Main Street Historic District.

Depot Historic District is a national historic district located at Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. The district encompasses five contributing buildings associated with the Southern Railway depot at Marion. The buildings date from about 1894 to about 1935. They are a commercial building (c. 1913), four-story former Buffaloe Building (c. 1908), commercial building (1911), Laughridge Furniture Company Building (c. 1894), and freight depot (c. 1935).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church located at 315 S. Main Street in Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. It was built in 1883, and is a one-story, Carpenter Gothic style frame church. It has a steeply pitched gable roof, board and batten exterior walls, lancet windows, and an elaborate bell tower added in 1903. St. John's is one of the few buildings that survived the 1894 fire on Main Street. St. John's Episcopal Church is a vibrant spiritual Community with roots formed more than a Century ago. The St. John's Episcopal Church, Marion, NC dates back to May 24, 1881, with the first two years of St. John's, services were held in private homes and other church buildings. Since 1883 the church has congregated at the same location on South Main Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Main Street Historic District.
