St Cross Church, Oxford

Holywell Manor is a historic building in central Oxford, England, in the parish of Holywell. It currently houses some of Balliol College's postgraduate student population. It is on the corner of Manor Road and St Cross Road, next to St Cross Church, which has become the Balliol College Historic Collections Centre.

Manor Road is a road in central Oxford, England. It is a no through road that links St Cross Road to the west with St Catherine's College, one of the newer Oxford colleges, to the east. The road crosses the Holywell Mill Stream. The road is named after Holywell Manor, which was rebuilt by Merton College in 1516. A workhouse was located here between 1740 and 1769. During 1856–1929, there was a refuge and training house run by the Sisters of St John the Baptist here. The Oxford University Faculty of Law and Bodleian Law Library are at the eastern end on the north side at the junction with St Cross Road. Holywell Manor (now an annexe of Balliol College since 1930), St Cross Church (now disused as a church and an archive for Balliol College), and Holywell Cemetery, are to the south at the western end. The Oxford University Air Squadron headquarters are on the north side.St Cross College has an annexe in Manor Place, a cul-de-sac off the south side of Manor Road.The most famous former resident of Manor Road was the Oxford academic and author J. R. R. Tolkien, at No. 3, with his wife Edith and only daughter Priscilla from 1947 to 1950, having moved from 20 Northmoor Road in North Oxford. Tolkien typed out The Hobbit once and The Lord of the Rings twice in the attic here. The Tolkiens moved to 99 Holywell Street for more room.

The Bodleian Social Science Library, Oxford (SSL) is the main teaching social sciences lending library at the University of Oxford, England. The library supports taught programmes for both undergraduates and postgraduates, and houses a dedicated research collection part of which contains legal deposit material out-housed from the Bodleian Library. The Social Science Library uses the Library of Congress classification scheme. The library is located in the Manor Road Building on Manor Road, Oxford. The Manor Road Building was designed by Foster & Partners.

St Cross Road is a road in Oxford, England. It links South Parks Road to the north and Longwall Street to the south, where it also meets Holywell Street. The road is named after St Cross Church.Linacre College, one of the colleges in the University of Oxford, is located at the northern end, opposite the Tinbergen Building, used by the university's Department of Zoology and Department of Experimental Psychology. St Catherine's College, another Oxford University college, is in Manor Road, a cul de sac east off St Cross Road. The Oxford University Faculty of Law and Bodleian Law Library are on the corner with Manor Road. Holywell Manor, St Cross Church, Holywell Cemetery, and Jowett Walk are at the southern end. St Cross College (now in St Giles'), one of the Oxford University colleges, used to be located in St Cross Road. The College still has an Annexe here.

New College Ground is a cricket ground in Oxford, England. The ground is owned by New College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford. The ground operated as a first-class cricket venue from 1906 to 1927, hosting three first-class matches.

Jowett Walk is a road in central Oxford, England. It connects Mansfield Road to the west with St Cross Road to the east, running parallel with and north of Holywell Street. The road was formerly named Love Lane and used to continue north to South Parks Road on what is now Mansfield Road. It is now named after the well-known Victorian Master of Balliol College, Benjamin Jowett (1817–1893). Much of the land in the area is owned by Balliol College, including the playing fields to the north and student housing.Merton College has a graduate annexe to the south of Jowett Walk at the eastern end. The Oxford Department of International Development is on the corner with Mansfield Road.

Longwall Street is a street in central Oxford, England. It runs for about 300 metres along the western flank of Magdalen College. A high, imposing 15th century stone wall separates the college from the street along its entire length. Behind part of the wall is the college's deer park. The street is actually named after the old city wall to the west of the street, now largely hidden in the grounds of New College. Holywell Street and St Cross Road form a junction with the northern end of the street. The High forms a junction with the southern end.

St Catherine's College Bicycle Store is located at St Catherine's College in the city of Oxford, in England. Designed by Arne Jacobsen in the 1960s, the structure is a Grade I listed building. One of some fifteen such bike sheds listed by Historic England, it is the only one to hold the highest, Grade I, designation.

The Michael Pilch Studio is a theatre in Oxford, England. It opened in 1997, has a capacity of 50–90 people depending on the configuration, and is located on Jowett Walk in central Oxford, England.The theatre was built as part of a phased development of buildings by Balliol College, mainly for student accommodation, on Jowett Walk during 1996–2004 (Phase 1 completed September 1996, Phase 2 completed July 2004), undertaken by MJP Architects.As a "black box" studio, the theatre is suitable for in-the-round staging and other non-standard layouts. It run by Balliol College Drama Society and is owned by Balliol College. The theatre is named after Michael Pilch (1927–2021), who was the benefactor who enabled the theatre to be built. The theatre stages a variety of productions, including Shakespeare. The theatre was renovated in 2016.

St Catherine's College (colloquially called St Catz or Catz) is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. In 1974, it was also one of the first men's colleges to admit women. It has 528 undergraduate students, 385 graduate students and 37 visiting students as of December 2020, making it one of the largest colleges in either Oxford or Cambridge.Designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, the college was built in an egalitarian architectural style that maximises the number of rooms, for academically qualified students who lacked the financial resources to study at Oxford. In September 2023, access to areas of the college was restricted due to safety concerns around the use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete.The college developed out of the university's St Catherine's Society; it was granted full status as a college in 1962 by the historian Alan Bullock, who became the first master of the college, and later vice-chancellor of the university. The current master is Kersti Börjars, who took over the role in 2020 and is the college's first female master.
