Cataño, Puerto Rico

Cataño barrio-pueblo is an urban barrio and the administrative center (seat) of Cataño, a municipality of Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,283. It is an urban barrio located in the northeastern section of the municipality.As was customary in Spain, in Puerto Rico, the municipality has a barrio called pueblo which contains a central plaza, the municipal buildings (city hall), and a Catholic church. Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza every year.

San Juan Bay (Spanish: Bahía de San Juan) is the bay and main inlet adjacent to Old San Juan in northeastern Puerto Rico. It is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) in length, the largest body of water in an estuary of about 97 square miles (250 km2) of channels, inlets and eight interconnected lagoons. The San Juan Bay is home to the island's busiest harbor and its history dates back to at least 1508.

The Superintendent of Lighthouses' Dwelling is an early 20th-century hacienda-style building located in the San Juan Coast Guard Station of La Puntilla in the Marina subdistrict (subbarrio) of Old San Juan. Although the exact date of construction is not known, deteriorated plan drawings of the old United States Naval Base that previously occupied the site of the coast guard station show that the building might have been built either in 1903 or 1908 as part of the regional lighthouses' depot. The building and its surroundings were identified as the Lighthouse Reservation at La Puntilla, with one of its earliest occupants, U.S. Lighthouse Superintendent J. P. Dillon signing and approving plan drawings by the Corps of Engineers. Although the architectural style is inspired in Spanish Revival haciendas found in both private and public buildings the United States, the specific "hacienda-style", as described by the U.S. government survey, was not indigenous nor common in Puerto Rico at the time, and the building and surrounding landscape represents the first design of its kind in the island after 1898.

The National Sanctuary of Blessed Martín de Porres (Spanish: Santuario Nacional San Martín de Porres) is a Catholic church and sanctuary dedicated to Martin de Porres located in Cataño, Puerto Rico. It was built in 1951 for the Dominican Priests as a pilgrimage church and as part of the community services for the Bay View and Bahía residential developments of suburban San Juan. German born Henry Klumb, designed the building in a Modernist style with a regional approach linked to the organic architecture described by Frank Lloyd Wright. The architect also followed liturgical and sacramental functions as dictated by doctrinal documents of the Catholic Church. The building was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

The United States Custom House (Spanish: Edificio de la Aduana de Estados Unidos), also known as the San Juan Custom House (Edificio de la Aduana de San Juan), is a historic custom house located at the marina of Old San Juan in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The custom house is located at the site of the former main port of the city of San Juan, north of the former Spanish Arsenal of San Juan, and next to the Las Dársenas and Immigrants' Square (Plaza del Inmigrante) and the Jose V. Toledo Federal Building and United States Courthouse. The large two-storey custom house is considered by the NRHP to be a superb example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. It is most notable for its size, its elaborate terracotta-ornamented central tower and its pink-colored exterior.

The Port of San Juan (Spanish: Puerto de San Juan) is a seaport facility located in the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The "Port of San Juan" is the general name used to call various passenger and cargo facilities located in lands around the San Juan Bay (Bahía de San Juan). The port is composed of a total of sixteen piers, of which eight are used for passenger ships and eight for cargo ships. The port's facilities, in addition to, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and the Cataño Ferry "Lancha de Cataño" services, are property of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. The bay and its docks are located along San Antonio Canal, a narrow navigable section of San Juan Bay lying south of Old San Juan and San Juan island, and north and west of the Puerto Rico Convention Center District and Isla Grande Airport. The municipalities of Cataño, Guaynabo and San Juan compose the south side of the bay and port.

Paseo de la Princesa (English: Promenade of the Princess or Princess Promenade), is a partially waterside 19th-century pedestrian promenade about .50 miles (0.80 km) in length located in the historic district of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico that is lined with Victorian lampposts and benches, large trees and gardens, and varying fountains and sculptures, and host to food and artisan street vendors, musical and theatrical street entertainers, and cultural restaurants and festivals. Constructed between 1852 and 1854 in honor of Queen Isabella II of Spain’s first-born, Princess of Asturias Infanta Isabel, the promenade runs adjacent and parallel to the southwestern section of the Walls of Old San Juan, passing by the Antigua Prisión La Princesa (The Princess Old Prison) from 1837, currently housing the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, and through the sculptural fountain Raíces (Roots), representing Puerto Rican identity since 1992, and ending at Puerta de San Juan (San Juan Gate), the starting location of Paseo del Morro (Promenade of the Morro). The promenade starts at Bastión de la Derecha de San Justo y Pastor (Left-side Bastion of San Justo and Pastor) on the Walls of Old San Juan in Marina, the southernmost sub-barrio in Old San Juan on the San Juan Islet, passing through the popular Fuente Raíces (Roots Fountain), a large sculptural fountain overlooking San Juan Bay since 1992 that represents Puerto Rican identity, a mixture of Taino, Spanish, and Sub-Saharan African ancestry and culture, and ending in the southwestern sub-barrio of Catedral in Old San Juan at the beginning of the western section of the Walls of Old San Juan at Puerta de San Juan (San Juan Gate), formerly known as Puerta de Agua (Water Gate), which lies next to La Fortaleza, the 16th-century executive residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, and is the starting location of Paseo del Morro (Promenade of the Morro), the waterfront promenade covering the rest of the western section of the defensive walls, culminating on Punta del Morro (Morro Point) at the bottom of Castillo San Felipe del Morro at the westernmost position on San Juan Islet overlooking the entrance to San Juan Bay, the Bar Channel.

La Fortaleza (lit., "The Fortress" ) is the official residence of the governor of Puerto Rico. It was built between 1533 and 1540 to defend the harbor of San Juan. The structure is also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina (Saint Catherine's Palace). It is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the New World. It was listed by UNESCO in 1983 as part of the World Heritage Site "La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site". During the 1640 reconstruction, the chapel of Santa Catalina, which originally stood outside the walls, was integrated into the structure's walls, resulting in the alternate name Santa Catalina's Castle.

Capilla del Cristo (Chapel of Christ), also called Capilla del Santo Cristo de la Salud is a small chapel / museum located in the Old San Juan Historic District of Puerto Rico. Built in the 18th century and saved from demolition in the 20th century, the structure has become a cultural icon of Puerto Rico. Most of the articles located at its altar are from 1753. Travel guides list Capilla del Cristo as one of the must-see places of Old San Juan.

Puerto Rico Ilustrado/El Mundo Building (Spanish: Edificio El Mundo/Puerto Rico Ilustrado) is a historic Art Deco high-rise building located in the Old San Juan historic district of the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The building was erected in 1923 to serve as the headquarters of the El Mundo newspaper and the Puerto Rico Ilustrado magazine. The architecture of the building blends numerous styles that represent the conjunction of various artistic movements and architectural schools of the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It is located in a high-rise block that faces the elevated La Palma Bastion portion of the city wall of San Juan which, when observed from beyond, makes the building look taller than it is in reality. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 for its architectural and historic importance.

The Jose V. Toledo Federal Building and United States Courthouse is a historic post office and courthouse located at Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is a courthouse for the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. It is also the site for oral argument before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, when that court sits in Puerto Rico.

Santa Ana Church (Spanish: Iglesia de Santa Ana), popularly known as Capilla de Santa Ana, is a historic 17th century Catholic church located in Old San Juan in San Juan, Puerto Rico.This often-missed church is located on Tetuan Street close to the Art Deco-style Banco Popular building. The church, one of the oldest in San Juan, is famous for its pink color, simple yet elegant interior design and its arches. According to historian Maria de los Angeles Castro the church might have been decorated with frescoes created by renown 18th century artist José Campeche. The church is open to visitors and still hosts religious services.
