Garcia River Forest

The Garcia River is a river on the northern coast of California, in southern Mendocino County. The river's watershed covers 144 square miles (370 km2) and its mainstem is 44 miles (71 km) long. The watershed receives 45 inches (1,100 mm) of precipitation per year near the coast and 75 inches (1,900 mm) inland. The watershed's elevation ranges from sea level near the ocean to 2,470 feet (750 m) in the Coast Range. The Garcia River empties into the Pacific Ocean just north of Point Arena. This place is called P'da Hau in the Native California Indians' language who reside on the outlet of the coast. It is named for the settler Rafael Garcia who was granted ownership of the land in 1844.The river provides recreation, agricultural and industrial water supply for the community of Point Arena, California, and wildlife habitat including cold freshwater habitat for fish migration and spawning. Excessive erosion caused by logging, grazing and gravel mining is the most serious issue facing the Garcia River. Logging in the area began in the 19th century, but the most damage occurred in the decades after World War II. During this time, modern machinery was available, increasing production, but environmental regulations and industry good practices had not yet been developed. The river and its tributaries were often clogged with logging slash. In addition, skidding the logs over streams destroyed their protective vegetation. The streams were eventually cleared of this debris, naturally and through human efforts. Unfortunately, there is now a lack of large woody debris in the streams because of the extensive logging. This debris is needed for salmonid reproduction, to help prevent erosion and to create pool habitat for aquatic organisms. About 80 percent of the land in the watershed is privately owned. Coast Forestlands is the largest landowner in the area, followed by Louisiana Pacific and Mailliard Ranch. There are several more large landowners that own the bulk of the rest. However, some land of the land consists of private residences and small ranches and farms. Public access to the river and the rest of the watershed is limited due to this private ownership.

Point Arena Light is a lighthouse in Mendocino County, California, United States, two miles (3 km) north of Point Arena, California. It is approximately 130 mi (210 km) north of San Francisco, in the Fort Point Group of lighthouses. The lighthouse features a small museum and gift shop. Guided tours of the light station as well as self-guided tours of the grounds are available daily.

Manchester State Park (also known as Manchester State Beach) is a state park of California, United States. It includes 18,000 feet (5,500 m) of protected beachfront on the Pacific Ocean in Northern California on State Route 1, 7 miles (11 km) north of Point Arena. The park features sand dunes, flat grasslands and five miles of gentle, sandy beachfront. The park is noted for steelhead and salmon fishing in the park's two streams, Brush Creek and Alder Creek, as well as the driftwood that collects in the catch basin created by the gently curved coastline. The 5,272-acre (2,134 ha) site was established as a California state park in 1955 and takes its name from Manchester, California, seven miles north of Point Arena.Aside from the coastal views, Manchester State Beach consists of grazing lands with flocks of sheep, and herds of cattle. Blue Irises, baby blue eyes, lupines, poppies, and sea pinks are featured in the park’s variety of wildflowers. Just off shore, the San Andreas Fault runs into the waters of the park. From October to April, Humpback whales and Gray whales can be spotted offshore during the annual migration. Right off the coast of Arena Point, experienced divers can dive from boats to view kelp forests and other marine life found in the park's protected waters.Camping is available on a first come, first served basis. Reservations are required and group campgrounds are available until the 16th of November.

Flumeville, now more commonly known as Rollerville or Rollerville Junction, is an archaic placename in Mendocino County, California. It is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-northwest of Point Arena, at an elevation of 190 feet (58 m).The site where the Flumeville bridge crosses the Garcia River was a Pomo village site called pda'haū, later known as the Manchester ranchería, or Garcia River ranchería. Flumeville was also known as Rollville or Rollerville, or was marked on old maps as "Hoisting Works", and was the site of the Garcia Mill. Lumber mill workers created a massive water wheel and flume to float logs via raised water troughs to the Pacific Ocean. In the early 20th century the very small town of Flumeville (or Rollerville) was a railroad stop. The flume was demolished in 1915.The former site of Flumeville is now "the turnoff west to Point Arena Lighthouse from Shoreline Highway". Flumeville Bridge and Rollerville Junction Campground (also known as Flumeville Campground) are used by recreational fisherman seeking steelhead trout.

Point Arena State Marine Reserve (SMR) and Point Arena State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) are two adjoining marine protected areas that extend offshore of Point Arena in Mendocino County on California’s north central coast. The combined area of these marine protected areas is 11.11 square miles (28.8 km2), with 4.38 square miles (11.3 km2) in the SMR and 6.73 square miles (17.4 km2) in the SMCA. Point Arena SMR prohibits the take of all living marine resources. Point Arena SMCA prohibits the take of all living marine resources, except commercial and recreational salmon trolling.

Manchester is a census-designated place in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is located 5 miles (8 km) north of Point Arena at an elevation of 85 feet (26 m). The population was 159 at the 2020 census, down from 195 in 2010.

The Manchester Schoolhouse, at 19750 California State Route 1 in Manchester, California, was built in 1907, the year after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.It is a two-story wood-frame building, about 64.5 by 32.5 feet (19.7 m × 9.9 m) in plan, with a hipped roof. It served as a school and also as a meeting hall for the city.It was deemed "significant as the only public building in Manchester surviving from the days when coastal logging was a prolific and flourishing industry. The school's design is notable as an outstanding example of North Coast school architecture and for its inclusion of a community/use/school use meeting room."

The Arena Union Elementary School District is a public elementary school district based in Point Arena, California and part of one of only ten "Common Districts" in the state, following a model where two separate legal entities responsible for local public education (typically one for primary education and the other for secondary education) operate with a common board of trustees, superintendent, district office and budget. In this instance, the other entity in the Common District is Point Arena Joint Union High School District. Operating one public elementary school and overseeing a K-12 charter school, it serves over 300 students from Manchester to Gualala and the Point Arena/Manchester Rancherias.

St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church (St. Paul's United Methodist Church) is a historic church at 40 School Street in Point Arena, California, United States. It was built in a Gothic Revival style and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.It is a one-story building with a T-shaped gable roof.

The LeGrand Morse House, at 365 Main St. in Point Arena in Mendocino County, California was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.It was built in the 1870s for LeGrand Morse, a local teacher, clerk, lawyer and legislator. It has some elements of vernacular Greek Revival style.It is an east-facing one-story house with a U-shaped plan, with three gable-roofed segments. The front door is inside the U, under a shed-roofed porch. The house, surrounded by a picket fence, is in a residential area north of the town's commercial center. Its National Register nomination provides this interesting explanation of its importance:This house is associated with one of Point Arena's founding families and is the only building directly linked with one of its early leading citizens. Dr. J. G. Morse arrived in Point Arena in 1858; his son Le Grand followed a year later. Le Grand Morse had a career of increasing prominence, beginning as a teacher and store clerk, moving into the sales of drugs and general merchandise, and finally becoming a lawyer and state legislator. It is unclear whether he had the house built for himself or moved into it sometime after its construction. In any case, he lived there during the most productive years of his life. His career ended on a sad note when he was arrested and imprisoned for accidentally poisoning his mother in 1898. (He was trying to murder his brother.) Morse, one of the last of the town's original settlers, died in 1907. The house itself is a curious example of residential building in the 1870s. The construction materials all date from that era, but the irregularly shaped U—plan appears as if the elements of the building were somehow pieced together after construction. The house shows that leading citizens of Point Arena did not require pretentious dwellings.

Point Arena, formerly known as Punta Arena (Spanish for "Sandy Point") is a small coastal city in Mendocino County, California, United States. Point Arena is located 32 miles (51 km) west of Hopland, at an elevation of 118 feet (36 m). The population was 460 at the 2020 census, making it one of the smallest incorporated cities in the state. Its main street is part of State Route 1, California's coastal artery. Along with a number of other Mendocino County coastal communities, Point Arena was associated with the hippie and subsequent counterculture groups. The economy is largely geared toward serving the summertime tourist industry. The city is near the headquarters of the tribal lands of the Manchester Band of Pomo Indians of the Manchester Rancheria and adjacent to the recently formed Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands National Monument. Hiking trails with coastal prairie and ocean views can be accessed from Point Arena City Hall. At Arena Cove Historic District and pier, huge oceanfront bluffs show the power of the interface of tectonic plates.

The Main Street Historic Commercial District in Point Arena, California is a 4-acre (1.6 ha) historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It included 21 contributing buildings.
